Arc Initiation for the Electromagnetic Powder Deposition Gun
The instrumentation, interpretation of data, and subsequent decisions regarding the direction of system development are discussed. Important system parameters, their impact on system performance, and techniques to measure them are presented. The electromagnetic powder deposition system is based on railgun technology developed by the Department of Defense. The system drives an ionized plasma sheet down the length of a railgun, reaching a final plasma velocity of 4 km/sec. The high velocity plasma, in turn, snowplows a shock compressed gas column in front of it. This gas column sweeps through a powder cloud and accelerates it by viscous drag to a final velocity of 2 km/sec. Important system parameters include particle velocity, gas velocity, gas column pressure, and plasma propagation and velocity. Diagnostic tools include pressure transducers, a high speed digital framing camera, fiber optics and magnetic probes.Center for Electromechanic
The Influence of Free Quintessence on Gravitational Frequency Shift and Deflection of Light with 4D momentum
Based on the 4D momentum, the influence of quintessence on the gravitational
frequency shift and the deflection of light are examined in modified
Schwarzschild space. We find that the frequency of photon depends on the state
parameter of quintessence : the frequency increases for and
decreases for . Meanwhile, we adopt an integral power number
() to solve the orbital equation of photon. The photon's
potentials become higher with the decrease of . The behavior of
bending light depends on the state parameter sensitively. In
particular, for the case of , there is no influence on the
deflection of light by quintessence. Else, according to the H-masers of GP-A
redshift experiment and the long-baseline interferometry, the constraints on
the quintessence field in Solar system are presented here.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables. European Physical Journal C in pres

Expansion dynamics of Pb-Pb collisions at 40 A GeV/c viewed by negatively charged hadrons
In this paper we present results on transverse mass spectra and Hanbury-Brown
and Twiss correlation functions of negatively charged hadrons, which are
expected to be mostly negative pions, measured in Pb-Pb collisions at 40 A
GeV/c beam momentum. Based on these data, the collision dynamics and the
space-time extent of the system at the thermal freeze-out are studied over a
centrality range corresponding to the most central 53% of the Pb--Pb inelastic
cross section. Comparisons with freeze-out conditions of strange particles and
HBT results from other experiments are discussed.Comment: 29 pages, 18 figure
Results on hyperon production from the NA57 experiment
Recent results on hyperon production in Pb--Pb collisions from the NA57
experiment are reported. Strangeness enhancement and the transverse mass
spectra properties at 158 GeV per nucleon are described.Comment: submitted to Acta Phys. Hung. A (Heavy Ion Physics
Decoherence control in microwave cavities
We present a scheme able to protect the quantum states of a cavity mode
against the decohering effects of photon loss. The scheme preserves quantum
states with a definite parity, and improves previous proposals for decoherence
control in cavities. It is implemented by sending single atoms, one by one,
through the cavity. The atomic state gets first correlated to the photon number
parity. The wrong parity results in an atom in the upper state. The atom in
this state is then used to inject a photon in the mode via adiabatic transfer,
correcting the field parity. By solving numerically the exact master equation
of the system, we show that the protection of simple quantum states could be
experimentally demonstrated using presently available experimental apparatus.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX, 8 figure
Strange particle production in 158 and 40 GeV/ Pb-Pb and p-Be collisions
Results on strange particle production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 and 40
GeV/ beam momentum from the NA57 experiment at CERN SPS are presented.
Particle yields and ratios are compared with those measured at RHIC.
Strangeness enhancements with respect to p-Be reactions at the same beam
momenta have been also measured: results about their dependence on centrality
and collision energy are reported and discussed.Comment: Contribution to the proceedings of the "Hot Quarks 2004" Conference,

Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA
Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5
GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS
detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the
centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total
transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly
a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4
GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This
observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with
a colourless object in the proton.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded fil
