Outlook for renewable energy technologies: Assessment of international programs and policies
The report presents an evaluation of worldwide research efforts in three specific renewable energy technologies, with a view towards future United States (US) energy security, environmental factors, and industrial competitiveness. The overall energy technology priorities of foreign governments and industry leaders, as well as the motivating factors for these priorities, are identified and evaluated from both technological and policy perspectives. The specific technologies of interest are wind, solar thermal, and solar photovoltaics (PV). These program areas, as well as the overall energy policies of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom (UK), Japan, Russia, and the European Community as a whole are described. The present and likely future picture for worldwide technological leadership in these technologies-is portrayed. The report is meant to help in forecasting challenges to US preeminence in the various technology areas, particularly over the next ten years, and to help guide US policy-makers as they try to identify specific actions which would help to retain and/or expand the US leadership position
Electromagnetic proton form factors in large QCD
The electromagnetic form factors of the proton are obtained using a
particular realization of QCD in the large limit (),
which sums up the infinite number of zero-width resonances to yield an Euler's
Beta function (Dual-). The form factors and
, as well as agree very well with reanalyzed space-like
data in the whole range of momentum transfer. In addition, the predicted ratio
is in good agreement with recent polarization transfer
measurements at Jefferson Lab.Comment: 10 page
On the accretion disc properties in eclipsing dwarf nova EM Cyg
In this paper we analyzed the behavior of the unusual dwarf nova EM Cyg using
the data obtained in April-October, 2007 in Vyhorlat observatory (Slovak
Republic) and in September, 2006 in Crimean Astrophysical Observatory
(Ukraine). During our observations EM Cyg has shown outbursts in every 15-40
days. Because on the light curves of EM Cyg the partial eclipse of an accretion
disc is observed we applied the eclipse mapping technique to reconstruct the
temperature distribution in eclipsed parts of the disc. Calculations of the
accretion rate in the system were made for the quiescent and the outburst
states of activity for different distances.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Astrophysics and Space Scienc
Changes in the ceIl membrane of Lactobacillus bulgaricus during storage following freeze-drying
The mechanism of inactivation of freeze-dried Lactobacillus bulgaricus during storage in maltodextrin under controlled humidity was investigated. Evidence is presented supporting the hypothesis that membrane damage occurs during storage. A study on the lipid composition of the cells by gas chromatography showed a decrease in the unsaturated and saturated fatty acid content of the cell. Further evidence indicating membrane damage includes a decrease in membrane bound proton-translocating ATPase activity
Implication of SAR of male medfly attractants in insect olfaction
[EN] Medfly (Ceratitis capitata) males are strongly attracted by different compounds, not described as pheromones. The best attractants reported are (+)-alpha-copaene, a sesquiterpene of natural source and (-)-ceralure-B1, a non-natural iodinated cyclohexane ester. Although their origin, atomic composition, chemical and physical properties are rather different, they show similar attraction to medflies. The question of why these compounds, act behaviorally in the same way, has been never addressed in research papers. We show here for the first time that these compounds have quite similar stereochemistry, water accessible surfaces, certain local dipole moments and, to some extent, similar octanol/water partition coefficient (log P). When seven carbons, one oxygen and one iodine belonging to (-)-ceralure-B1 are selectively chosen based on topological homology with (+)-alpha-copaene and are overlaid with nine corresponding carbons of (+)-alpha-copaene, the RMS is 0.367 Angstrom. This represents a high degree of steric resemblance. Local dipole moments and charges are similar in those regions where the molecules show topological homologies. Thus, we hypothesize that these two molecules could interact with the same male medfly's odorant receptor(s). The implications of this result in future research in insect olfaction is discussed.Casaña Giner, V.; Levi, V.; Navarro-Llopis, V.; Jang, E. (2002). Representational predicaments for employees: Their impact on perceptions of supervisors\u27 individualized consideration and on employee job satisfaction
A representational predicament for a subordinate vis-à-vis his or her immediate superior involves perceptual incongruence with the superior about the subordinate\u27s work or work context, with unfavourable implications for the employee. An instrument to measure the incidence of two types of representational predicament, being neglected and negative slanting, was developed and then validated through an initial survey of 327 employees. A subsequent substantive survey with a fresh sample of 330 employees largely supported a conceptual model linking being neglected and negative slanting to perceptions of low individualized consideration by superiors and to low overall job satisfaction. The respondents in both surveys were all Hong Kong Chinese. Two case examples drawn from qualitative interviews illustrate and support the conceptual model. Based on the research findings, we recommend some practical exercises to use in training interventions with leaders and subordinates. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
