Generalized Statistics Variational Perturbation Approximation using q-Deformed Calculus
A principled framework to generalize variational perturbation approximations
(VPA's) formulated within the ambit of the nonadditive statistics of Tsallis
statistics, is introduced. This is accomplished by operating on the terms
constituting the perturbation expansion of the generalized free energy (GFE)
with a variational procedure formulated using \emph{q-deformed calculus}. A
candidate \textit{q-deformed} generalized VPA (GVPA) is derived with the aid of
the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. The generalized Bogoliubov inequality for the
approximate GFE are derived for the case of canonical probability densities
that maximize the Tsallis entropy. Numerical examples demonstrating the
application of the \textit{q-deformed} GVPA are presented. The qualitative
distinctions between the \textit{q-deformed} GVPA model \textit{vis-\'{a}-vis}

Mutual information-based binarisation of multiple images of an object: an application in medical imaging
A new method for image thresholding of two or more images that are acquired in different modalities or acquisition protocols is proposed. The method is based on measures from information theory and has no underlying free parameters nor does it require training or calibration. The method is based on finding an optimal set of global thresholds, one for each image, by maximising the mutual information above the thresholds while minimising the mutual information below the thresholds. Although some assumptions on the nature of images are made, no assumptions are made by the method on the intensity distributions or on the shape of the image histograms. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated both on synthetic images and medical images from clinical practice. It is then compared against three other thresholding method

Straube and Oades review the evidence from twin adoption studies of schizophrenia and conclude that schizophrenia is substantially influenced by genetic factors. Lewontin, Rose and Kamin find the evidence for the heritability of schizophrenia to be unconvincing and argue that greater attention should be focused on social and cultural factors in the genesis of schizophrenia
A Comparison of Model Migration Tools
International audienceModelling languages and thus their metamodels are subject to change. When a metamodel evolves, existing models may no longer conform to the evolved metamodel. To avoid rebuilding them from scratch, existing models must be migrated to conform to the evolved metamodel. Manually migrating existing models is tedious and errorprone. To alleviate this, several tools have been proposed to build a migration strategy that automates the migration of existing models. Little is known about the advantages and disadvantages of the tools in different situations. In this paper, we thus compare a representative sample of migration tools - AML, COPE, Ecore2Ecore and Epsilon Flock - using common migration examples. The criteria used in the comparison aim to support users in selecting the most appropriate tool for their situation
Memory enhancing drugs and Alzheimerâs Disease: Enhancing the self or preventing the loss of it?
In this paper we analyse some ethical and philosophical questions related to the development of memory enhancing drugs (MEDs) and anti-dementia drugs. The world of memory enhancement is coloured by utopian thinking and by the desire for quicker, sharper, and more reliable memories. Dementia is characterized by decline, fragility, vulnerability, a loss of the most important cognitive functions and even a loss of self. While MEDs are being developed for self-improvement, in Alzheimerâs Disease (AD) the self is being lost. Despite this it is precisely those patients with AD and other forms of dementia that provide the subjects for scientific research on memory improvement. Biomedical research in the field of MEDs and anti-dementia drugs appears to provide a strong impetus for rethinking what we mean by âmemoryâ, âenhancementâ, âtherapyâ, and âselfâ. We conclude (1) that the enhancement of memory is still in its infancy, (2) that current MEDs and anti-dementia drugs are at best partially and minimally effective under specific conditions, (3) that âmemoryáŸżand âenhancementáŸżare ambiguous terms, (4) that there is no clear-cut distinction between enhancement and therapy, and (5) that the research into MEDs and anti-dementia drugs encourages a reductionistic view of the human mind and of the self
The SF3B1 inhibitor spliceostatin A (SSA) elicits apoptosis in chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells through downregulation of Mcl-1
The pro-survival Bcl-2 family member Mcl-1 is expressed in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), with high expression correlated with progressive disease. The spliceosome inhibitor spliceostatin A (SSA), is known to regulate Mcl-1 and so here we assessed the ability of SSA to elicit apoptosis in CLL. SSA induced apoptosis of CLL cells at low nanomolar concentrations in a dose- and time-dependent manner, but independently of SF3B1 mutational status, IGHV status and CD38 or ZAP70 expression. However, normal B and T cells were less sensitive than CLL cells (P=0.006 and P<0.001, respectively). SSA altered the splicing of anti-apoptotic MCL-1L to MCL-1s in CLL cells coincident with induction of apoptosis. Overexpression studies in Ramos cells suggested Mcl-1 was important for SSA-induced killing since its expression inversely correlated with apoptosis (P=0.001). IL4 and CD40L, present in patient lymph nodes, are known to protect tumor cells from apoptosis and significantly inhibited SSA, ABT-263 and ABT-199 induced killing following administration to CLL cells (P=0.008). However, by combining SSA with the Bcl-2/Bcl-xL antagonists ABT-263 or ABT-199, we were able to overcome this pro-survival effect. We conclude that SSA combined with Bcl-2/Bcl-xL antagonists may have therapeutic utility for CL

Fusion of secretory vesicles isolated from rat liver
Secretory vesicles isolated from rat liver were found to fuse after exposure to Ca2+. Vescle fusion is characterized by the occurrence of twinned vesicles with a continuous cleavage plane between two vesicles in freeze-fracture electron microscopy. The number of fused vesicles increases with increasing Ca2+-concentrations and is half maximal around 10â6 m. Other divalent cations (Ba2+, Sr2+, and Mg2+) were ineffective. Mg2+ inhibits Ca2+-induced fusion. Therefore, the fusion of secretory vesiclesin vitro is Ca2+ specific and exhibits properties similar to the exocytotic process of various secretory cells.
Various substances affecting secretionin vivo (microtubular inhibitors, local anethetics, ionophores) were tested for their effect on membrane fusion in our system.
The fusion of isolated secretory vesicles from liver was found to differ from that of pure phospholipid membranes in its temperature dependence, in its much lower requirement for Ca2+, and in its Ca2+-specificity. Chemical and enzymatic modifications of the vesicle membrane indicate that glycoproteins may account for these differences
Fitting the integrated Spectral Energy Distributions of Galaxies
Fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies is an almost
universally used technique that has matured significantly in the last decade.
Model predictions and fitting procedures have improved significantly over this
time, attempting to keep up with the vastly increased volume and quality of
available data. We review here the field of SED fitting, describing the
modelling of ultraviolet to infrared galaxy SEDs, the creation of
multiwavelength data sets, and the methods used to fit model SEDs to observed
galaxy data sets. We touch upon the achievements and challenges in the major
ingredients of SED fitting, with a special emphasis on describing the interplay
between the quality of the available data, the quality of the available models,
and the best fitting technique to use in order to obtain a realistic
measurement as well as realistic uncertainties. We conclude that SED fitting
can be used effectively to derive a range of physical properties of galaxies,
such as redshift, stellar masses, star formation rates, dust masses, and
metallicities, with care taken not to over-interpret the available data. Yet
there still exist many issues such as estimating the age of the oldest stars in
a galaxy, finer details ofdust properties and dust-star geometry, and the
influences of poorly understood, luminous stellar types and phases. The
challenge for the coming years will be to improve both the models and the
observational data sets to resolve these uncertainties. The present review will
be made available on an interactive, moderated web page (sedfitting.org), where
the community can access and change the text. The intention is to expand the
