    Hyperlipidaemia, obesity and drug misuse in a diabetic clinic

    A study of middle-aged and elderly patients attending a diabetic clinic has revealed a disturbing state of affairs. Hyperlipidaemia and obesity were very common but little attention was paid to implementing appropriate dietary regimens. Management was largely confined to the control of hyperglycaemia by using oral hypoglycaemic agents, especially combinations of sulphonylureas and diguanides. This situation is deplored. Firstly, it ignores the correction of factors which are as important, if not more so, than hyperglycaemia, in regard to the development of the most lethal complication of maturity-onset diabetes, namely occlusive atherosclerosis. Secondly, it substitutes for dietary therapy, which is physiological, treatment by drugs which are potentially harmful.     Decay process accelerated by tunneling in its very early stage

    We examine a fast decay process that arises in the transition period between the Gaussian and exponential decay processes in quantum decay systems. It is usually expected that the decay is decelerated by a confinement potential barrier. However, we find a case where the decay in the transition period is accelerated by tunneling through a confinement potential barrier. We show that the acceleration gives rise to an appreciable effect on the time evolution of the nonescape probability of the decay system.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in Phys.     Adaptations in the Temporalis Muscles of Rabbits after Masseter Muscle Removal

    Masseter muscles were surgically removed in six young female rabbits so that we could study adaptations of the superficial temporalis muscles (ST) to increased functional requirements. Eight weeks following surgery, we used morphological measurements, histochemistry, contractile properties in situ, and occlusal force in vivo to compare the muscles in the experimental animals and six control rabbits. Analysis of the results demonstrated a decrease in fatigability of ST after masseter myectomy. Incisal occlusal force decreased by 65% during the first two weeks, and no recovery was observed during the following six weeks. At eight weeks post-surgery, the mass, twitch tensions, and tetanic tensions of ST were not significantly different from those of the controls. An increase in the percent of the cross-sectional area composed of fast fatigue-resistant fibers, a slower time-to-peak twitch tension, and a decrease in fatigability suggest an increase in oxidative metabolism. Analysis of these results suggests that muscles used for highly repetitious activities with submaximal loadings adapt to increased functional requirements by increasing fatigue-resistant properties.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68261/2/10.1177_00220345860650110201.pd

    Quantum railroads and directed localization at the juncture of quantum Hall systems

    The integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) and one-dimensional Anderson localization (AL) are limiting special cases of a more general phenomenon, directed localization (DL), predicted to occur in disordered one-dimensional wave guides called "quantum railroads" (QRR). Here we explain the surprising results of recent measurements by Kang et al. [Nature 403, 59 (2000)] of electron transfer between edges of two-dimensional electron systems and identify experimental evidence of QRR's in the general, but until now entirely theoretical, DL regime that unifies the QHE and AL.     On the Potts model partition function in an external field

    We study the partition function of Potts model in an external (magnetic) field, and its connections with the zero-field Potts model partition function. Using a deletion-contraction formulation for the partition function Z for this model, we show that it can be expanded in terms of the zero-field partition function. We also show that Z can be written as a sum over the spanning trees, and the spanning forests, of a graph G. Our results extend to Z the well-known spanning tree expansion for the zero-field partition function that arises though its connections with the Tutte polynomial

    The clustering of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and their sources

    The sky distribution of cosmic rays with energies above the 'GZK cutoff' holds important clues to their origin. The AGASA data, although consistent with isotropy, shows evidence for small-angle clustering, and it has been argued that such clusters are aligned with BL Lacertae objects, implicating these as sources. It has also been suggested that clusters can arise if the cosmic rays come from the decays of very massive relic particles in the Galactic halo, due to the expected clumping of cold dark matter.     The three-dimensional random field Ising magnet: interfaces, scaling, and the nature of states

    The nature of the zero temperature ordering transition in the 3D Gaussian random field Ising magnet is studied numerically, aided by scaling analyses. In the ferromagnetic phase the scaling of the roughness of the domain walls, w∌Lζw\sim L^\zeta, is consistent with the theoretical prediction ζ=2/3\zeta = 2/3. As the randomness is increased through the transition, the probability distribution of the interfacial tension of domain walls scales as for a single second order transition. At the critical point, the fractal dimensions of domain walls and the fractal dimension of the outer surface of spin clusters are investigated: there are at least two distinct physically important fractal dimensions. These dimensions are argued to be related to combinations of the energy scaling exponent, Ξ\theta, which determines the violation of hyperscaling, the correlation length exponent Îœ\nu, and the magnetization exponent ÎČ\beta. The value ÎČ=0.017±0.005\beta = 0.017\pm 0.005 is derived from the magnetization: this estimate is supported by the study of the spin cluster size distribution at criticality. The variation of configurations in the interior of a sample with boundary conditions is consistent with the hypothesis that there is a single transition separating the disordered phase with one ground state from the ordered phase with two ground states. The array of results are shown to be consistent with a scaling picture and a geometric description of the influence of boundary conditions on the spins. In particular, when X11 follows an exponential law, then M belongs to the Dirichlet Markov Ensemble of random stochastic matrices. Our main result states that with probability one, the counting probability measure of the complex spectrum of n^(1/2)M converges weakly as n tends to infinity to the uniform law on the centered disk of radius sigma/m.     Dark Synergy: Gravitational Lensing and the CMB

    Power spectra and cross-correlation measurements from the weak gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the cosmic shearing of faint galaxies images will help shed light on quantities hidden from the CMB temperature anisotropies: the dark energy, the end of the dark ages, and the inflationary gravitational wave amplitude. Even with modest surveys, both types of lensing power spectra break CMB degeneracies and they can ultimately improve constraints on the dark energy equation of state w by over an order of magnitude. In its cross correlation with the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect, CMB lensing offers a unique opportunity for a more direct detection of the dark energy and enables study of its clustering properties. By obtaining source redshifts and cross-correlations with CMB lensing, cosmic shear surveys provide tomographic handles on the evolution of clustering correspondingly better precision on the dark energy equation of state and density. Both can indirectly provide detections of the reionization optical depth and modest improvements in gravitational wave constraints which we compare to more direct constraints. Conversely, polarization B-mode contamination from CMB lensing, like any other residual foreground, darkens the prospects for ultra-high precision on gravitational waves through CMB polarization requiring large areas of sky for statistical subtraction. To evaluate these effects we provide fitting formula for the evolution and transfer function of the Newtonian gravitational potential.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures submitted to PR
