A direct numerical simulation method for complex modulus of particle dispersions
We report an extension of the smoothed profile method (SPM)[Y. Nakayama, K.
Kim, and R. Yamamoto, Eur. Phys. J. E {\bf 26}, 361(2008)], a direct numerical
simulation method for calculating the complex modulus of the dispersion of
particles, in which we introduce a temporally oscillatory external force into
the system. The validity of the method was examined by evaluating the storage
and loss moduli of a system composed of identical
spherical particles dispersed in an incompressible Newtonian host fluid at
volume fractions of , 0.41, and 0.51. The moduli were evaluated at
several frequencies of shear flow; the shear flow used here has a zigzag
profile, as is consistent with the usual periodic boundary conditions
Coherent quantum transport in narrow constrictions in the presence of a finite-range longitudinally polarized time-dependent field
We have studied the quantum transport in a narrow constriction acted upon by
a finite-range longitudinally polarized time-dependent electric field. The
electric field induces coherent inelastic scatterings which involve both
intra-subband and inter-sideband transitions. Subsequently, the dc conductance
G is found to exhibit suppressed features. These features are recognized as the
quasi-bound-state (QBS) features which are associated with electrons making
transitions to the vicinity of a subband bottom, of which the density of states
is singular. Having valley-like instead of dip-like structures, these QBS
features are different from the G characteristics for constrictions acted upon
by a finite-range time-modulated potential. In addition, the subband bottoms in
the time-dependent electric field region are shifted upward by an energy
proportional to the square of the electric field and inversely proportional to
the square of the frequency. This effective potential barrier is originated
from the square of the vector potential and it leads to the interesting
field-sensitive QBS features. An experimental set-up is proposed for the
observation of these features.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Exponential Metric Fields
The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission will use advanced
technologies to achieve its science goals: the direct detection of
gravitational waves, the observation of signals from compact (small and dense)
stars as they spiral into black holes, the study of the role of massive black
holes in galaxy evolution, the search for gravitational wave emission from the
early Universe. The gravitational red-shift, the advance of the perihelion of
Mercury, deflection of light and the time delay of radar signals are the
classical tests in the first order of General Relativity (GR). However, LISA
can possibly test Einstein's theories in the second order and perhaps, it will
show some particular feature of non-linearity of gravitational interaction. In
the present work we are seeking a method to construct theoretical templates
that limit in the first order the tensorial structure of some metric fields,
thus the non-linear terms are given by exponential functions of gravitational
strength. The Newtonian limit obtained here, in the first order, is equivalent
to GR.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science, 17 page
Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays
Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in , and
light quark () events from decays measured in the SLD experiment.
Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of
and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select
quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities:
,
, from
which we derived the differences between the total average charged
multiplicities of or quark events and light quark events: and . We compared
these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with
perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the
QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent
fragmentation.Comment: 19 pages LaTex, 4 EPS figures, to appear in Physics Letters
A causal roadmap for generating high-quality real-world evidence
Increasing emphasis on the use of real-world evidence (RWE) to support clinical policy and regulatory decision-making has led to a proliferation of guidance, advice, and frameworks from regulatory agencies, academia, professional societies, and industry. A broad spectrum of studies use real-world data (RWD) to produce RWE, ranging from randomized trials with outcomes assessed using RWD to fully observational studies. Yet, many proposals for generating RWE lack sufficient detail, and many analyses of RWD suffer from implausible assumptions, other methodological flaws, or inappropriate interpretations. The Causal Roadmap is an explicit, itemized, iterative process that guides investigators to prespecify study design and analysis plans; it addresses a wide range of guidance within a single framework. By supporting the transparent evaluation of causal assumptions and facilitating objective comparisons of design and analysis choices based on prespecified criteria, the Roadmap can help investigators to evaluate the quality of evidence that a given study is likely to produce, specify a study to generate high-quality RWE, and communicate effectively with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders. This paper aims to disseminate and extend the Causal Roadmap framework for use by clinical and translational researchers; three companion papers demonstrate applications of the Causal Roadmap for specific use cases
Superdeformation and double blocking in Eu
Abstract To what extent does the medium, that is to say inscription way and also the dynamics of " reading ", play a significative role to regards the context it takes on in the process of advertising aesthetic behaviours ? Here is the question raised repeatealy in the debate and statements about the theme of digital arts. The characteristics of this new vector, imperative logic, bivalent algebra, langage, electronic flux, affect the arts and stimulate the emergency of new ones. But this influence occurs in the area of meaning and therefore we have to start investigating again first into the meaning of traditional techniques affected by the mutation so as to undestand the compatibility of the format of existing arts is with that of digital art as a medium and as an original form of art. A few assomptions concerning visual arts will be found in this article, where hypothesis of the cognitive impact of art is taken from previous texts and dealt with the light of new facts. A criticism of digital arts reveals the tremendous complexity prevailing in this domain. From the simulation of traditional techniques to the ethical consequences of a bio-symbolical " iconosphère " made real thanks to exhibition, crossing the phenomenal dressing of idealities of the sensitive structure, we are far from reading there the simple theoretical solutions suggested by the software ideology and the supposedly naive denominational binarism
