    Evolution of the single-hole spectral function across a quantum phase transition in the anisotropic-triangular-lattice antiferromagnet

    We study the evolution of the single-hole spectral function when the ground state of the anisotropic-triangular-lattice antiferromagnet changes from the incommensurate magnetically-ordered phase to the spin-liquid state. In order to describe both of the ground states on equal footing, we use the large-N approach where the transition between these two phases can be obtained by controlling the quantum fluctuations via an 'effective' spin magnitude. Adding a hole into these ground states is described by a t-J type model in the slave-fermion representation. Implications of our results to possible future ARPES experiments on insulating frustrated magnets, especially Cs2_2CuCl4_4, are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    A Map-Reduce Parallel Approach to Automatic Synthesis of Control Software

    Many Control Systems are indeed Software Based Control Systems, i.e. control systems whose controller consists of control software running on a microcontroller device. This motivates investigation on Formal Model Based Design approaches for automatic synthesis of control software. Available algorithms and tools (e.g., QKS) may require weeks or even months of computation to synthesize control software for large-size systems. This motivates search for parallel algorithms for control software synthesis. In this paper, we present a Map-Reduce style parallel algorithm for control software synthesis when the controlled system (plant) is modeled as discrete time linear hybrid system. Furthermore we present an MPI-based implementation PQKS of our algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first parallel approach for control software synthesis. We experimentally show effectiveness of PQKS on two classical control synthesis problems: the inverted pendulum and the multi-input buck DC/DC converter. Experiments show that PQKS efficiency is above 65%. As an example, PQKS requires about 16 hours to complete the synthesis of control software for the pendulum on a cluster with 60 processors, instead of the 25 days needed by the sequential algorithm in QKS.Comment: To be submitted to TACAS 2013. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1207.4474, arXiv:1207.409

    Kaplan-Narayanan-Neuberger lattice fermions pass a perturbative test

    We test perturbatively a recent scheme for implementing chiral fermions on the lattice, proposed by Kaplan and modified by Narayanan and Neuberger, using as our testing ground the chiral Schwinger model. The scheme is found to reproduce the desired form of the effective action, whose real part is gauge invariant and whose imaginary part gives the correct anomaly in the continuum limit, once technical problems relating to the necessary infinite extent of the extra dimension are properly addressed. The indications from this study are that the Kaplan--Narayanan--Neuberger (KNN) scheme has a good chance at being a correct lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories.Comment: LaTeX 18 pages, 3 figure

    Universal Statistics of the Scattering Coefficient of Chaotic Microwave Cavities

    We consider the statistics of the scattering coefficient S of a chaotic microwave cavity coupled to a single port. We remove the non-universal effects of the coupling from the experimental S data using the radiation impedance obtained directly from the experiments. We thus obtain the normalized, complex scattering coefficient whose Probability Density Function (PDF) is predicted to be universal in that it depends only on the loss (quality factor) of the cavity. We compare experimental PDFs of the normalized scattering coefficients with those obtained from Random Matrix Theory (RMT), and find excellent agreement.     On the energy of homogeneous cosmologies

    An energy for the homogeneous cosmological models is presented. More specifically, using an appropriate natural prescription, we find the energy within any region with any gravitational source for a large class of gravity theories--namely those with a tetrad description--for all 9 Bianchi types. Our energy is given by the value of the Hamiltonian with homogeneous boundary conditions; this value vanishes for all regions in all Bianchi class A models, and it does not vanish for any class B model. This is so not only for Einstein's general relativity but, moreover, for the whole 3-parameter class of tetrad-teleparallel theories. For the physically favored one parameter subclass, which includes the teleparallel equivalent of Einstein's theory as an important special case, the energy for all class B models is, contrary to expectation, negative.Comment: 11 pages, reformated with minor change

    Visual function due to regeneration of optic nerve or optic tract through peripheral nerve homografts

    Segments of sciatic nerve from one leg were used to induce regeneration of transected optic nerve (ON) or tract in Syrian hamsters. In the first group, the nerve graft was sutured to the stump of the transected ON of the right eye in young adult animals, and the other end was placed below the surface of the ipsilateral superior colliculus (SC); the opposite eye was removed. In one animal, orienting movements in the wrong direction were elicited and recorded on videotape, beginning when the animal was more than 1.5 yr old, over 1 yr after surgery. In the second group, a similar procedure was used but with the nerve going to the contralateral SC. In 3 of 4 long-term survivors, visually elicited turning was obtained and recorded, most reliably in the final 4 mo of their 2-yr life. Regenerating retinofugal axons were traced and their terminations in SC reconstructed using a CT-B procedure and immunohistochemistry (secondary AB conjugated to Alexa-488) and fluorescence microscopy. The visually unresponsive animal had no regeneration, and the most responsive animal had the greatest amount of regeneration. In a 3rd procedure, the right brachium of SC was transected, and 2 or 3 segments of sciatic nerve were implanted as bridges to elicit optic tract regeneration. The first 3 of these animals were operated at age 13-19 days; considerable regeneration was verified anatomically in each case, after behavioral demonstration of visual orienting.     Implications of the antiplatelet therapy gap left with discontinuation of prasugrel in Canada

    Background The current Canadian Cardiovascular Society antiplatelet therapy guidelines recommend the use of ticagrelor or prasugrel over clopidogrel as first-line platelet P2Y12 receptor antagonists for treatment of moderate- to high-risk acute coronary syndromes. Recently, Effient (prasugrel [Eli Lilly Canada Inc, Toronto, Canada]) was discontinued by its distributor in Canada. Methods Five members of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society antiplatelet therapy 2018 guidelines committee undertook an independent, evidence-based review to outline patients for whom prasugrel should be the optimal P2Y12 agent and discuss alternative strategies to consider without prasugrel. Results Several clinical scenarios where prasugrel should be indicated are identified and discussed. Considerations to be undertaken for alternative therapies are summarized, including a review of national and international guidelines for de-escalation of P2Y12 receptor antagonists. Conclusions The discontinuation of prasugrel poses a challenge for clinicians. Résultats Plusieurs scénarios cliniques où le prasugrel devrait être indiqué sont recensés et abordés. Les réflexions sur les solutions de rechange au traitement, notamment une revue des lignes directrices nationales et internationales en matière de désescalade des antagonistes des récepteurs P2Y12, sont présentées.     Simultaneous Optical Model Analyses of Elastic Scattering, Breakup, and Fusion Cross Section Data for the 6^{6}He + 209^{209}Bi System at Near-Coulomb-Barrier Energies

    Based on an approach recently proposed by us, simultaneous χ2\chi^{2}-analyses are performed for elastic scattering, direct reaction (DR) and fusion cross sections data for the 6^{6}He+209^{209}Bi system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies to determine the parameters of the polarization potential consisting of DR and fusion parts. We show that the data are well reproduced by the resultant potential, which also satisfies the proper dispersion relation. A discussion is given of the nature of the threshold anomaly seen in the potential

    Timing by Stellar Pulsations as an Exoplanet Discovery Method

    The stable oscillations of pulsating stars can serve as accurate timepieces, which may be monitored for the influence of exoplanets. An external companion gravitationally tugs the host star, causing periodic changes in pulsation arrival times. This method is most sensitive to detecting substellar companions around the hottest pulsating stars, especially compact remnants like white dwarfs and hot subdwarfs, as well as delta Scuti variables (A stars). However, it is applicable to any pulsating star with sufficiently stable oscillations. Care must be taken to ensure that the changes in pulsation arrival times are not caused by intrinsic stellar variability; an external, light-travel-time effect from an exoplanet identically affects all pulsation modes.
