    Erraticity of Rapidity Gaps

    The use of rapidity gaps is proposed as a measure of the spatial pattern of an event. When the event multiplicity is low, the gaps between neighboring particles carry far more information about an event than multiplicity spikes, which may occur very rarely. Two moments of the gap distrubiton are suggested for characterizing an event. The fluctuations of those moments from event to event are then quantified by an entropy-like measure, which serves to describe erraticity. We use ECOMB to simulate the exclusive rapidity distribution of each event, from which the erraticity measures are calculated. The dependences of those measures on the order of qq of the moments provide single-parameter characterizations of erraticity.Comment: 10 pages LaTeX + 5 figures p

    Single-Dirac-Cone topological surface states in TlBiSe2 class of Topological Insulators

    We have investigated several strong spin-orbit coupling ternary chalcogenides related to the (Pb,Sn)Te series of compounds. Our first-principles calculations predict the low temperature rhombohedral ordered phase in TlBiTe2, TlBiSe2, and TlSbX2 (X=Te, Se, S) to be topologically Kane-Mele Z2 = -1 nontrivial. We identify the specific surface termination that realizes the single Dirac cone through first-principles surface state computations. This termination minimizes effects of dangling bonds making it favorable for photoemission (ARPES) experiments. Our analysis predicts that thin films of these materials would harbor novel 2D quantum spin Hall states, and support odd-parity topological superconductivity.     SU(5) Heterotic Standard Model Bundles

    We construct a class of stable SU(5) bundles on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with two sections, a variant of the ordinary Weierstrass fibration, which admits a free involution. The bundles are invariant under the involution, solve the topological constraint imposed by the heterotic anomaly equation and give three generations of Standard Model fermions after symmetry breaking by Wilson lines of the intermediate SU(5) GUT-group to the Standard Model gauge group. Among the solutions we find some which can be perturbed to solutions of the Strominger system. Thus these solutions provide a step toward the construction of phenomenologically realistic heterotic flux compactifications via non-Kahler deformations of Calabi-Yau geometries with bundles. This particular class of solutions involves a rank two hidden sector bundle and does not require background fivebranes for anomaly cancellation.Comment: 17 page

    From lightcone actions to maximally supersymmetric amplitudes

    In this article actions for N=4 SYM and N=8 supergravity are formulated in terms of a chiral superfield, which contains only the physical degrees of freedom of either theory. In these new actions, which originate from the lightcone superspace, the supergravity cubic vertex is the square of the gauge theory one (omitting the color structures). Amplitude calculations using the corresponding Feynman supergraph rules are tedious, but can be simplified by choosing a preferred superframe. Recursive calculations of all MHV amplitudes in N=4 SYM and the four-point N=8 supergravity amplitude are shown to agree with the known results and connections to the BCFW recursion relations are pointed out.     Theory for superconductivity in (Tl,K)Fex_xSe2_2 as a doped Mott insulator

    Possible superconductivity in recently discovered (Tl,K)Fex_xSe2_2 compounds is studied from the viewpoint of doped Mott insulator. The Mott insulating phase is examined to be preferred in the parent compound at x=1.5x=1.5 due to the presence of Fe vacancies. Partial filling of vacancies at the Fe-sites introduces electron carriers and leads to electron doped superconductivity. By using a two-orbital Hubbard model in the strong coupling limit, we find that the s-wave pairing is more favorable at small Hund's coupling, and dx2−y2_{x^2-y^2} wave pairing is more favorable at large Hund's coupling.Comment: 4+ pages, 3 figures, to appear in EP

Second, we give a brief survey of verification techniques that can be used to analyse services and their interaction.     Chinese consumer preference for beef with geographical indications and other attributes

    \ua9 2024 The AuthorsAs the demand for beef products grows in the Chinese market, understanding consumer preferences for beef, especially those related to quality labelling, is essential. The recent agreement between China and the European Union to promote Geographical Indications (GIs) provides a new insight into preferences for beef with quality labelling. This paper assesses consumer preferences for beef products with GIs and other attributes. A nationwide survey is conducted including 1210 respondents in China by a choice experiment attributing GI label, ‘green’, ‘hazard-free’, and ‘organic’ labels, feeding regimes (grain-fed, grass-fed), country of origin (China, Ireland, Australia, Brazil), and price (30, 40, 80, 100 \ua5/500 g). The random parameter logit model with error component reveals that Chinese consumers have a significant preference for grain-fed beef and domestic beef, and they are willing to pay a premium price for GI-labelled beef compared with other attributes. The interaction between GIs and country of origin is included to indicate the positive price impact of GIs on imported beef products.     Approximating Multilinear Monomial Coefficients and Maximum Multilinear Monomials in Multivariate Polynomials

    This paper is our third step towards developing a theory of testing monomials in multivariate polynomials and concentrates on two problems: (1) How to compute the coefficients of multilinear monomials; and (2) how to find a maximum multilinear monomial when the input is a ΠΣΠ\Pi\Sigma\Pi polynomial. We first prove that the first problem is \#P-hard and then devise a O∗(3ns(n))O^*(3^ns(n)) upper bound for this problem for any polynomial represented by an arithmetic circuit of size s(n)s(n). Later, this upper bound is improved to O∗(2n)O^*(2^n) for ΠΣΠ\Pi\Sigma\Pi polynomials. We then design fully polynomial-time randomized approximation schemes for this problem for ΠΣ\Pi\Sigma polynomials. On the negative side, we prove that, even for ΠΣΠ\Pi\Sigma\Pi polynomials with terms of degree ≤2\le 2, the first problem cannot be approximated at all for any approximation factor ≥1\ge 1, nor {\em "weakly approximated"} in a much relaxed setting, unless P=NP. For the second problem, we first give a polynomial time λ\lambda-approximation algorithm for ΠΣΠ\Pi\Sigma\Pi polynomials with terms of degrees no more a constant λ≥2\lambda \ge 2. On the inapproximability side, we give a n(1−ϵ)/2n^{(1-\epsilon)/2} lower bound, for any ϵ>0,\epsilon >0, on the approximation factor for ΠΣΠ\Pi\Sigma\Pi polynomials. When terms in these polynomials are constrained to degrees ≤2\le 2, we prove a 1.04761.0476 lower bound, assuming P≠NPP\not=NP; and a higher 1.06041.0604 lower bound, assuming the Unique Games Conjecture
