    Combining Undersampled Dithered Images

    Get PDF
Undersampled images, such as those produced by the HST WFPC-2, misrepresent fine-scale structure intrinsic to the astronomical sources being imaged. Analyzing such images is difficult on scales close to their resolution limits and may produce erroneous results. A set of ``dithered'' images of an astronomical source generally contains more information about its structure than any single undersampled image, however, and may permit reconstruction of a ``superimage'' with Nyquist sampling. I present a tutorial on a method of image reconstruction that builds a superimage from a complex linear combination of the Fourier transforms of a set of undersampled dithered images. This method works by algebraically eliminating the high order satellites in the periodic transforms of the aliased images. The reconstructed image is an exact representation of the data-set with no loss of resolution at the Nyquist scale. The algorithm is directly derived from the theoretical properties of aliased images and involves no arbitrary parameters, requiring only that the dithers are purely translational and constant in pixel-space over the domain of the object of interest. I show examples of its application to WFC and PC images. I argue for its use when the best recovery of point sources or morphological information at the HST diffraction limit is of interest.Comment: 22 pages, 9 EPS figures, submitted to PAS

Vehicular fuel composition and atmospheric emissions in South China: Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, and Zhuhai

International audienceVehicular emission is an important source of air pollutants in urban cities in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of South China. In order to study the impact of vehicular fuel on air quality, several commonly used fuel samples were collected in four main cities in the PRD region ? Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Macau and Zhuhai, and analyzed for their volatile organic compounds (VOCs) composition. Source profiles of the vehicular fuels used in these cities were constructed and are believed to be the first reported for the PRD region. The C8?C10 hydrocarbons were the main constituents of diesel. Different from diesel, gasoline used in the PRD region was mainly comprised of lighter C4?C7 hydrocarbons, with toluene and i-pentane being the two most abundant species. The benzene content in the Guangzhou and Zhuhai gasoline samples were higher than that in Hong Kong and Macau and exceeded the maximum benzene levels for Mainland China unleaded gasoline. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) samples were collected only in Hong Kong and were comprised mainly of n-butane, propane and i-butane. Traffic samples indicated that evaporative loss and vehicular combustion were the primary contributors to elevated VOC levels in roadside atmospheres. Significant i-pentane and toluene concentrations were observed in roadside atmospheres in all four cities. Ratio of i-pentane in gasoline samples to that in roadside samples were calculated and this showed that the degree of evaporative loss was higher in Guangzhou and Zhuhai than that in Hong Kong and Macau. We suggest the difference is due to the better maintenance and more new cars in Hong Kong and Macau. From tunnel samples collected in Hong Kong in two different years, we found that the relative amount of propane, i-butane, and n-butane increased between 2001 to 2003, consistent with the 40% increase in LPG fueled vehicles. Propane to butanes ratios were calculated for LPG and tunnels samples, and the comparable ratios illustrated the LPG leakages from LPG fueled vehicles crossing the tunnel

Inhibition of ornithine decarboxylase activity by follicle stimulating hormone in primary culture of rat Sertoli cells

The effect of follicle stimulating hormone on the activity of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) was determined in primary culture of rat Sertoli cells. Three different FSH preparations (NIH oFSH-S-15, S-16, and eFSH) inhibited ODC activity in rat Sertoli cells under different media conditions. The inhibition was both time- and dose-dependent. The mechanism of the FSH inhibitory effect was studied using dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate (dbcAMP), 1-methyl-3-isobutylxanthine (MIX), forskolin, and isoproterenol. All of these agents, known to elevate cellular cAMP levels, inhibited ODC activity in cultured rat Sertoli cells. The combined effect of each of these substances plus FSH was either greater than, or equal to, that of FSH alone, and was not additive. Dibutyryl cyclic guanosine monophosphate had no effect on the ODC activity. These findings suggest that FSH inhibition of ODC activity in the rat Sertoli cell may be mediated by cAMP

Glassy Roughness of a Crystalline Surface Upon a Disordered Substrate

The discrete Gaussian model for the surface of a crystal deposited on a disordered substrate is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. A continuous transition is found from a phase with a thermally-induced roughness to a glassy one in which the roughness is driven by the disorder. The behavior of the height-height correlations is consistent with the one-step replica symmetry broken solution of the variational approximation. The results differ from the renormalization group predictions and from recent simulations of a 2D vortex-glass model which belongs to the same universality class.Comment: 12 pages (RevTeX) & 3 figures (PS) uuencode

Anomalous magnetic moment in parity-conserving QED3

In this article we derive the anomalous magnetic moment of fermions in (2+1)-dimensional parity-conserving QED3, in the presence of an externally applied constant magnetic field. We use a spectral representation of the photon propagator to avoid infrared divergences. We also discuss the scaling with the magnetic field intensity in the case of strong external fields, where there is dynamical mass generation for fermions induced by the magnetic field itself (magnetic catalysis). The results of this paper may be of relevance to the physics of high-temperature superconductors.Comment: 27 pages LATEX, three eps figures incorporate
