Filtering device
An electrical filter for removing noise from a voice communications signal is reported; seven sample values of the signal are obtained continuously, updated and subjected to filtering. Filtering is accomplished by adding balanced, with respect to a mid-point sample, spaced pairs of the sampled values, and then multiplying each pair by a selected filter constant. The signal products thus obtained are summed to provide a filtered version of the original signal
Topological Phases in Neuberger-Dirac operator
The response of the Neuberger-Dirac fermion operator D=\Id + V in the
topologically nontrivial background gauge field depends on the negative mass
parameter in the Wilson-Dirac fermion operator which enters
through the unitary operator . We classify
the topological phases of by comparing its index to the topological charge
of the smooth background gauge field. An exact discrete symmetry in the
topological phase diagram is proved for any gauge configurations. A formula for
the index of D in each topological phase is derived by obtaining the total
chiral charge of the zero modes in the exact solution of the free fermion

Mechanism of enhanced light output in InGaN-based microlight emitting diodes
Micro-light emitting diode (LED) arrays with diameters of 4 to 20 mum have been fabricated and were found to be much more efficient light emitters compared to their broad-area counterparts, with up to five times enhancement in optical power densities. The possible mechanisms responsible for the improvement in performance were investigated. Strain relaxation in the microstructures as measured by Raman spectroscopy was not observed, arguing against theories of an increase in internal quantum efficiency due to a reduction of the piezoelectric field put forward by other groups. Optical microscope images show intense light emission at the periphery of the devices, as a result of light scattering off the etched sidewalls. This increases the extraction efficiency relative to broad area devices and boosts the forward optical output. In addition, spectra of the forward emitted light reveal the presence of resonant cavity modes [whispering gallery (WG) modes in particular] which appear to play a role in enhancing the optical output
Flow instabilities in transonic small disturbance theory
The dynamics of unsteady transonic small disturbance flows about two-dimensional airfoils is examined, with emphasis on the behavior in the region where the steady state flow is nonunique. It is shown that nonuniqueness results from an extremely long time scale instability which occurs in a finite Mach number and angle of attack range. The similarity scaling rules for the instability are presented and the possibility of similar behavior in the Euler equations is discussed
Flight control electronics reliability/maintenance study
Collection and analysis of data are reported that concern the reliability and maintenance experience of flight control system electronics currently in use on passenger carrying jet aircraft. Two airlines B-747 airplane fleets were analyzed to assess the component reliability, system functional reliability, and achieved availability of the CAT II configuration flight control system. Also assessed were the costs generated by this system in the categories of spare equipment, schedule irregularity, and line and shop maintenance. The results indicate that although there is a marked difference in the geographic location and route pattern between the airlines studied, there is a close similarity in the reliability and the maintenance costs associated with the flight control electronics
Force distributions in a triangular lattice of rigid bars
We study the uniformly weighted ensemble of force balanced configurations on
a triangular network of nontensile contact forces. For periodic boundary
conditions corresponding to isotropic compressive stress, we find that the
probability distribution for single-contact forces decays faster than
exponentially. This super-exponential decay persists in lattices diluted to the
rigidity percolation threshold. On the other hand, for anisotropic imposed
stresses, a broader tail emerges in the force distribution, becoming a pure
exponential in the limit of infinite lattice size and infinitely strong

InGaN nano-ring structures for high-efficiency light emitting diodes
A technique based on the Fresnel diffraction effect for the fabrication of nano-scale site-controlled ring structures in InGaN/GaN multi-quantum well structures has been demonstrated. The ring structures have an internal diameter of 500 nm and a wall width of 300 nm. A 1 cm-1 Raman shift has been measured, signifying substantial strain relaxation from the fabricated structure. The 9 nm blueshift observed in the cathodoluminescence spectra can be attributed to band filling and/or screening of the piezoelectric field. A light emitting diode based on this geometry has been demonstrated
Microscopic theory for the glass transition in a system without static correlations
We study the orientational dynamics of infinitely thin hard rods of length L,
with the centers-of-mass fixed on a simple cubic lattice with lattice constant
a.We approximate the influence of the surrounding rods onto dynamics of a pair
of rods by introducing an effective rotational diffusion constant D(l),l=L/a.
We get D(l) ~ [1-v(l)], where v(l) is given through an integral of a
time-dependent torque-torque correlator of an isolated pair of rods. A glass
transition occurs at l_c, if v(l_c)=1. We present a variational and a
numerically exact evaluation of v(l).Close to l_c the diffusion constant
decreases as D(l) ~ (l_c-l)^\gamma, with \gamma=1. Our approach predicts a
glass transition in the absence of any static correlations, in contrast to

Before hybrid soybeans can become a reality, two requirements should be satisfied: (i) an economical large-scale method of producing hybrid seed must be found, and (ii) heterosis for yield must exist. With the findings of genetic male sterility in soybeans (Brim and Young, 1971) interest has devel-oped in the potential productivity of hybrid soybeans. A method for produc-ing experimental quantities of hybrid soybean seed using genetic male sterility and green seed embryo was suggested by Burton and Carter (1983)
