    Position estimating in peer-to-peer networks

    We present two algorithms for indoor positioning estimation in peer-to-peer networks. The setup is a network of two types of devices: reference devices with a known location and blindfolded devices that can determine distances to reference devices and each other. From this information the blindfolded devices try to estimate their positions. A typical scenario is navigation inside a shopping mall where devices in the parking lot can make contact with GPS satellites, whereas devices inside the building make contact with each other, devices on the parking lot, and devices fixed to the building. The devices can measure their in-between distances, with some measurement error, and exchange positioning information. However, other devices might only know their position with some error. We present two algorithms for positioning estimation in such a peer-to-peer network. The first one is purely geometric and is based on Euclidean geometry and intersecting spheres. We rewrite the information to a linear system, which is typically overdetermined. We use least squares to ??nd the best estimate for a device its position. The second approach can be considered as a probabilistic version of the geometric approach. We estimate the probability density function that a device is located at a position given a probability density function for the positions of the other devices in the network, and a probability density function of the measured distances. First we study the case with a distance measurement to a single other user, then we focus on multiple other users. We give an approximation algorithm that is the probabilistic analogue of the intersecting spheres method. We show some simulated results where ambiguous data lead to well defined probability distributions for the position of a device. We conclude with some open questions

The material presented in this annex documents metrics, methods, and common data sets that are typically used across multiple chapters of the report. The annex is composed of three parts: Part I introduces standards metrics and common definitions adopted in the report; Part II presents methods to derive or calculate certain quantities used in the report; and Part III provides more detailed background information about common data sources that go beyond what can be included in the chapters. While this structure may help readers to navigate through the annex, it is not possible in all cases to unambiguously assign a certain topic to one of these parts, naturally leading to some overlap between the parts

    Dual Role of Ribosome-Binding Domain of NAC as a Potent Suppressor of Protein Aggregation and Aging-Related Proteinopathies

    The nascent polypeptide-associated complex (NAC) is a conserved ribosome-associated protein biogenesis factor. Whether NAC exerts chaperone activity and whether this function is restricted to de novo protein synthesis is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that NAC directly exerts chaperone activity toward structurally diverse model substrates including polyglutamine (PolyQ) proteins, firefly luciferase, and Aβ40. Strikingly, we identified the positively charged ribosome-binding domain in the N terminus of the βNAC subunit (N-βNAC) as a major chaperone entity of NAC. N-βNAC by itself suppressed aggregation of PolyQ-expanded proteins in vitro, and the positive charge of this domain was critical for this activity. Moreover, we found that NAC also exerts a ribosome-independent chaperone function in vivo. Consistently, we found that a substantial fraction of NAC is non-ribosomal bound in higher eukaryotes. In sum, NAC is a potent suppressor of aggregation and proteotoxicity of mutant PolyQ-expanded proteins associated with human diseases like Huntington’s disease and spinocerebellar ataxias

    The Working Group III (WGIII) contribution to the IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) assesses literature on the scientific, technological, environmental, economic and social aspects of mitigation of climate change. It builds upon the WGIII contribution to the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report (AR4), the Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN) and previous reports and incorporates subsequent new findings and research. Throughout, the focus is on the implications of its findings for policy, without being prescriptive about the particular policies that governments and other important participants in the policy process should adopt. In light of the IPCC's mandate, authors in WGIII were guided by several principles when assembling this assessment: (1) to be explicit about mitigation options, (2) to be explicit about their costs and about their risks and opportunities vis-a-vis other development priorities, (3) and to be explicit about the underlying criteria, concepts, and methods for evaluating alternative policies.     The Working Group III contribution to the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (WGIII AR5) provides a comprehensive assessment of all relevant options for mitigating climate change through limiting or preventing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as activities that remove them from the atmosphere. It draws on scientific literature accepted for publication prior to 4 October 2013. The WGIII Summary for Policymakers was approved at the Twelfth Session of Working Group III, held in Berlin, Germany, from 7 to 11 April, 2014. During the session, the IPCC plenary also accepted the underlying scientific and technical assessment, which stands at 2000 pages, including more than 700 pages of references

    Mittelstand und Mitbestimmung. Unternehmensführung, Mitbestimmung und Beteiligung in mittelständischen Unternehmen

    In diesem Buch werden ausgewählte Ergebnisse zweier Studien zum Verhältnis von Mittelstand und Mitbestimmung vorgestellt. Ausgangspunkt der Fragestellung ist die Beobachtung, dass im Betriebsverfassungsrecht zwar für Unternehmen ab fünf Beschäftigten ein Betriebsrat möglich ist, ein solcher aber in der überwiegenden Zahl der betreffenden Betriebe nicht existiert. Die Gründe dafür eruiert das Buch anhand verschiedener Fragen: Welche Sichtweise und welche Einstellungen haben Mittelständler gegenüber Mitbestimmung? Was wissen sie darüber? Welche Ängste und Befürchtungen beeinflussen möglicherweise ihre Einstellung zu der Thematik? Welche alternativen Mechanismen zur Arbeitnehmerbeteiligung und zur Konfliktlösung gibt es in den einzelnen Betrieben? Welche Erfahrungen haben Mittelständler schließlich in der Auseinandersetzung oder Zusammenarbeit mit Betriebsräten in ihren Betrieben gemacht?
