    Optimization of Passive and Hybrid Mode-locked Figure Eight Laser

    In pulsed fiber laser using Q-switching or mode locking techniques, the choice of the different components and the management of linear and non linear parameters of the cavity, play a paramount role in the generation of stable ultra short pulses with high peak powers and low widths. In this paper, we focus on the operating process of mode locked fiber lasers especially passively and hybrid type Eight Fiber Lasers (8FLs). By modeling the light propagation within the two cavities, we describe the whole operating process of ultra short pulses generation. The interaction between the mode locking mechanism and nonlinear effects in fiber laser is also illustrated. We demonstrate enhancing non linear effects do not lead necessarily to better results. It depends on the type of mode locking techniques used. The highest and narrowest output pulses are obtained for specific values of the non linear parameters and the mean dispersion of the cavity

    Seasonal variation in the diet and the morphometric parameters of the genus Pseudophoxinus sp. (Cyprinidae) in Eastern Algeria

    The diet and the morphometric parameters of the Pseudophoxinus sp. (Cyprinidae) in the El Mellah ravine (M’sila, Algeria) were studied by determining body measurements and analyzing the contents of digestive tracts of 320 fish from December 2018 to November 2019. The obtained results show marked diversity within the fish species diets, which can be grouped into three main fractions: (i) a plant fraction; (ii) an animal fraction composed mainly of invertebrate prey; and (iii) fraction consisting of fish eggs (digested by males during the breeding season). The plant fraction was present in all the analyzed digestive tracts, mainly being composed of phytoplankton (algae), namely, Spirogyra sp., Melosira sp. and Navicula sp. with the total relative abundances of 38.7%, 34.4% and 4.1%, respectively. On the other hand, the animal fraction was represented by the Chironomus sp., Austrosimulium sp., and Ecdyonurus sp. dipterans with a total relative abundance of 7.3%, 6.7% and 5.9%, respectively. Pseudophoxinus sp. eggs can also be considered as part of this fraction with the total relative abundance of 2.9%. The age of the fish seems to have an influence on their feeding behaviour. The juveniles of Pseudophoxinus sp. in the study area had a purely phytophagous diet, while adults showed a phytophagous behaviour with an omnivorous tendency. The present study shows that not only the age of the fish but also the seasonal changes (climatic conditions and entry into the breeding season) may have a significant influence on the diet and morphometric parameters of Pseudophoxinus sp. in El Mellah ravine

    Enhanced Version of Multi-algorithm Genetically Adaptive for Multiobjective optimization

    Abstract: Multi-objective EAs (MOEAs) are well established population-based techniques for solving various search and optimization problems. MOEAs employ different evolutionary operators to evolve populations of solutions for approximating the set of optimal solutions of the problem at hand in a single simulation run. Different evolutionary operators suite different problems. The use of multiple operators with a self-adaptive capability can further improve the performance of existing MOEAs. This paper suggests an enhanced version of a genetically adaptive multi-algorithm for multi-objective (AMAL-GAM) optimisation which includes differential evolution (DE), particle swarm optimization (PSO), simulated binary crossover (SBX), Pareto archive evolution strategy (PAES) and simplex crossover (SPX) for population evolution during the course of optimization. We examine the performance of this enhanced version of AMALGAM experimentally over two different test suites, the ZDT test problems and the test instances designed recently for the special session on MOEA?s competition at the Congress of Evolutionary Computing of 2009 (CEC?09).     Hysteresis phenomenon and multistability in figure-of-eight microstructured fiber laser

    We report a theoretical investigation of multi-pulse emission of a microstructured figure-ofeight fiber laser operating in passive mode-locking. The proposed laser is mode locked by the nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). We study, in this paper, the hysteresis dependence and the number of pulses in steady state as a function of both the small signal gain and the nonlinear coefficient of microstructured fiber. The numerical simulation confirms that the pulse splitting is a consequence of the energy quantization in anomalous dispersion. Moreover, our results suggest that the hysteresis phenomenon is an intrinsic feature of the mode-locked fiber lasers independently of the exact mode-locking mechanism. Finally, we identify that the nonlinear coefficient of microstructured fiber plays a key role in the formation of multi-soliton

    Control of the square pulse properties in figure-of-eight microstructured fiber laser

    We numerically analyze the square pulse emission from a passively mode-locked figure-of-eight microstructured optical fiber laser. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the high nonlinearity of the microstructured fiber plays a key role in the output pulse duration. A dual-stage erbium-doped fiber amplifier has been used in the cavity. The first amplifier, localized in the nonlinear amplifying loop mirror, allows control of the pulse width, while the second amplifier in the unidirectional ring allows variation of the amplitude without affecting the pulse width. Our results give some physical insight to the square pulse formation and the generation of high-energy pulses. Our numerical model provides a general approach to control the properties of a square pulse, and hence could be of great importance for the design of practical high-energy fiber laser systems

    MECHANICAL STRESS ON KNEES DURING HALF-SQUAT EXERCISES

    INTRODUCTION Articular forces and moments have been found to be affected by the lifting technique in ergonomics (Trafirnow et al., 1993) and in weight-training (Poumarat et al.,1989).While these researchers have improved our understanding of biomechanical aspects of lifting as related to the spine and the lower extremities, most of them remain related to either static orquasi-static conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanical stress on the knee joint using a 3-D dynamic model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three male volunteer students participated in the study. They were asked to perform three different sets of 10 half-squat exercises: no load, 100% and 120% of total body mass of the subject additional weight. To determine kinematic data, the movement of the half-squat exercises was recorded using the Mac Reflex optoelectronic system (4 cameras) with markers on the left lower extremity at the fust metatarsal, the external rnalleolus, the external lateral femoral condyle and the greater trochanter. A six components force-plate (AMTI) provided kinetic data. Compressive and the shear forces acting on the thigh at the knee joint were calculated where; Fx represents the compressive force; Mx, the external rotatory moment of the thigh; Fy, the medio-lateral shear force; My, the extension moment of the thigh; Fz, the antero-posterior shear force; and Mz, the abductor moment of the thigh. The resultant knee force, in all subjects, increases when lifted load increases. A similar increase in the resultant moment at the knee joint was found. These pic values were calculated for a knee angle of 108. The medio-lateral shear force (Fy) was not affected by the load. However, during the middle phase of the exercise, the mtero-posterior shear force increased from 0.72 to 0. 88 times body weight when lifted mass increased from 1 to 1.20 times body weight. For the compressive component (Fx), no clear variation as a function of load was found in this study in all subjects. Even for the heaviest load (120% body weight), no increase in forces and moments was recorded from the first to the last repetition of one set. CONCLUSION The results of this study demonstrated that mechanical stress acting on knee joint in half-squat exercise increased with lifted barbell. For knee force components, load was found to affect only the antero-posterior shear force. The medio-lateral shear force was independent of this variable.     Oxidation of iodide and iodine on birnessite (δ-MnO2) in the pH range 4-8

    The oxidation of iodide by synthetic birnessite (δ-MnO2) was studied in perchlorate mediain the pH range 4-8. Iodine (I2) was detected as an oxidation product that was subsequently further oxidized to iodate (IO3). The third order rate constants, second order on iodide and first order on manganese oxide, determined by extraction of iodine in benzene decreased with increasing pH (6.3-7.5) from 1790 to 3.1 M2 s1. Both iodine and iodate were found to adsorb significantly on birnessite with an adsorption capacity of 12.7 mM/g for iodate at pH5.7. The rate of iodine oxidation by birnessite decreased with increasing ionic strength, which resulted in a lower rate of iodate formation. The production of iodine in iodide-containing waters in contact with manganese oxides may result in the formation of undesired iodinated organic compounds (taste and odor, toxicity) in natural and technical systems. The probability of the formation of such compounds is highest in the pH range 5-7.5. For pH 7.5, iodide is not oxidized to a significant extent

    Theory of Current-Driven Domain Wall Motion: A Poorman's Approach

    A self-contained theory of the domain wall dynamics in ferromagnets under finite electric current is presented. The current is shown to have two effects; one is momentum transfer, which is proportional to the charge current and wall resistivity (\rhow), and the other is spin transfer, proportional to spin current. For thick walls, as in metallic wires, the latter dominates and the threshold current for wall motion is determined by the hard-axis magnetic anisotropy, except for the case of very strong pinning. For thin walls, as in nanocontacts and magnetic semiconductors, the momentum-transfer effect dominates, and the threshold current is proportional to \Vz/\rhow, \Vz being the pinning potential
