Vibration analysis of rotor blades with an attached concentrated mass
The effect of an attached concentrated mass on the dynamics of helicopter rotor blades is determined. The point transmission matrix method was used to define, through three completely automated computer programs, the natural vibrational characteristics (natural frequencies and mode shapes) of rotor blades. The problems of coupled flapwise bending, chordwise bending, and torsional vibration of a twisted nonuniform blade and its special subcase pure torsional vibration are discussed. The orthogonality relations that exist between the natural modes of rotor blades with an attached concentrated mass are derived. The effect of pitch, rotation, and point mass parameters on the collective, cyclic, scissor, and pure torsional modes of a seesaw rotor blade is determined

Neural Representations of Courtship Song in the Drosophila Brain
Acoustic communication in drosophilid flies is based on the production and perception of courtship songs, which facilitate mating. Despite decades of research on courtship songs and behavior in Drosophila, central auditory responses have remained uncharacterized. In this study, we report on intracellular recordings from central neurons that innervate the Drosophila antennal mechanosensory and motor center (AMMC), the first relay for auditory information in the fly brain. These neurons produce graded-potential (nonspiking) responses to sound; we compare recordings from AMMC neurons to extracellular recordings of the receptor neuron population [Johnston's organ neurons (JONs)]. We discover that, while steady-state response profiles for tonal and broadband stimuli are significantly transformed between the JON population in the antenna and AMMC neurons in the brain, transient responses to pulses present in natural stimuli (courtship song) are not. For pulse stimuli in particular, AMMC neurons simply low-pass filter the receptor population response, thus preserving low-frequency temporal features (such as the spacing of song pulses) for analysis by postsynaptic neurons. We also compare responses in two closely related Drosophila species, Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila simulans, and find that pulse song responses are largely similar, despite differences in the spectral content of their songs. Our recordings inform how downstream circuits may read out behaviorally relevant information from central neurons in the AMMC
Haldane Exclusion Statistics and the Boltzmann Equation
We generalize the collision term in the one-dimensional Boltzmann-Nordheim
transport equation for quasiparticles that obey the Haldane exclusion
statistics. For the equilibrium situation, this leads to the ``golden rule''
factor for quantum transitions. As an application of this, we calculate the
density response function of a one-dimensional electron gas in a periodic
potential, assuming that the particle-hole excitations are quasiparticles
obeying the new statistics. We also calculate the relaxation time of a nuclear
spin in a metal using the modified golden rule.Comment: version accepted for publication in J. of Stat. Phy
Chromium uptake by Fenugreek
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum- graecum) is both herb (leaves) and a spice (seed) belonging to the family Fabaceae. Fenugreek leaves and seeds are used in the cuisine of India. Fenugreek also has medicinal value. Fenugreek seeds are known to reduce serum glucose and improve glucose tolerance and hence are prescribed to diabetic patients. In the recent past supplemental Chromium is being prescribed to diabetic patients to activate (increased- insulin binding, insulin receptor number, insulin receptor phosphorylation) insulin. Plants can uptake substantial quantities of toxic metals from contaminated soils if these soils are well ameliorated.

It is then probable that the medicinal efficacy of Fenugreek in the case of diabetes could be enhanced if it takes up chromium from the soil. Preliminary studies are being conducted to note the chromium uptake by Fenugreek from soils which are applied with potassium dichromate
Studies on the Accumulation of Chromium in Fenugreek
Studying Cr uptake by Fenugreek, we note that the maximum concentration of Cr takes place in the shells of the pods followed by leaves, stems and seeds in that order. Interestingly, applied higher doses of Cr does not increase accumulation of Cr in the stems, rather Cr content in the stems levels off. However, the maximum dispersal/distribution of Cr taken up is in the leaves
Estimation of C II and C II* column densities along Galactic sight-lines
We present interstellar C II (1334.5323 \AA) and C II* (1335.7077 \AA) column
density measurements along 14 Galactic sight-lines. These sight-lines sample a
variety of Galactic disk environments and include paths that range nearly two
orders of magnitude in average hydrogen densities () along the lines of
sight. Five of the sight-lines show super-Solar gas phase abundances of carbon.
Our results show that the excess carbon along these sight-lines may result from
different mechanisms taking place in the regions associated with these stars.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures; Accepted for publication in BAS
A Network Flow Model for Irrigation Water Management
Irrigation water management plays a crucial role in the growth and prosperity of countries like India. Optimization Techniques can be effectively used in the management of irrigation water. Motivated by a real crisis in Andhra Pradesh, India, the authors made an attempt to provide scientific solution to the problem of management of Pennar Delta System of Nellore District in Andhra Pradesh. The problem concerns the management of water distribution and scheduling for given requirements and availabilities of water at various nodes of the irrigation network of the system. This article provides a model and framework for the problem in question. The problem is formulated as a dynamic minimum cost network flow problem and provides an approach to solve the problem using static network flow models. A need based software is also developed to solve the network flow problems. Some issues in the programming are discussed
