Active ageing – Enhancing digital literacies in elderly citizens
Being digital and information literate is crucial in nowadays society, although not every citizen has the necessary means and resources to achieve these skills, especially the elderly ones. Therefore it is necessary to develop ways to help them to enhance their digital and information competences. In this paper we will present an ongoing project that was designed and implemented with the goal to provide elderly citizens with the necessary skills of a networked society, contributing for an active ageing. The methods used were based on a set of hands on workshops delivered by a team of voluntary students and teacher, with the help of collaborators from a nursing home. Earth Albedo and the orbit of LAGEOS
The long-period perturbations in the orbit of the Lageos satellite due to the Earth's albedo have been found using a new analytical formalism. The Earth is assumed to be a sphere whose surface diffusely reflects sunlight according to Lambert's law. Specular reflection is not considered. The formalism is based on spherical harmonics; it produces equations which hold regardless of whether the terminator is seen by the satellite or not. Specializing to the case of a realistic zonal albedo shows that Lageos' orbital semimajor axis changes periodically by only the a few millimeters and the eccentricity by one part in 100,000. The longitude of the node increases secularly. The effect considered here can explain neither the secular decay of 1.1 mm/day in the semimajor axis nor the observed along-track variations in acceleration of order 2 x 10 to the minus 12 power/sq ms
The orbit of Lageos and solar eclipses
An eclipse of the Sun by the Moon as seen by the Lageos satellite can affect the orbital semimajor axis at the centimeter level. The weakened radiation pressure acting on Lageos perturbs the orbit differently from that due to full sunlight. This difference amounted to less than 2 mm in the semimajor axis for 23 of the 30 eclipses Lageos experienced between launch in 1976 and the end of 1983. However, it was 17.6 mm for the eclipses on 28 March 1979 and 11.2 mm for the one on 15 December 1982. Differences such as these generate large enough along-track errors to make it worthwhile to include eclipses in complex orbit determination programs such as GEODYN which integrate the orbit. Eclipses cannot explain the presently unmolded variations in along-track acceleration which have a magnitude of about 3 x 10(-12) ms(-2)
Nakajima-Zwanzig versus time-convolutionless master equation for the non-Markovian dynamics of a two-level system
We consider the exact reduced dynamics of a two-level system coupled to a
bosonic reservoir, further obtaining the exact time-convolutionless and
Nakajima-Zwanzig non-Markovian equations of motion. The considered system
includes the damped and undamped Jaynes-Cummings model. The result is obtained
by exploiting an expression of quantum maps in terms of matrices and a simple
relation between the time evolution map and time-convolutionless generator as
well as Nakajima-Zwanzig memory kernel. This non-perturbative treatment shows
that each operator contribution in Lindblad form appearing in the exact
time-convolutionless master equation is multiplied by a different time
dependent function. Similarly, in the Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation each
such contribution is convoluted with a different memory kernel. It appears that
depending on the state of the environment the operator structures of the two
set of equations of motion can exhibit important differences.Comment: 12 pages, no figure
Capturing correlations in chaotic diffusion by approximation methods
We investigate three different methods for systematically approximating the
diffusion coefficient of a deterministic random walk on the line which contains
dynamical correlations that change irregularly under parameter variation.
Capturing these correlations by incorporating higher order terms, all schemes
converge to the analytically exact result. Two of these methods are based on
expanding the Taylor-Green-Kubo formula for diffusion, whilst the third method
approximates Markov partitions and transition matrices by using the escape rate
theory of chaotic diffusion. We check the practicability of the different
methods by working them out analytically and numerically for a simple
one-dimensional map, study their convergence and critically discuss their
usefulness in identifying a possible fractal instability of parameter-dependent
diffusion, in case of dynamics where exact results for the diffusion

Ratchet effect in dc SQUIDs
We analyzed voltage rectification for dc SQUIDs biased with ac current with
zero mean value. We demonstrate that the reflection symmetry in the
2-dimensional SQUID potential is broken by an applied flux and with appropriate
asymmetries in the dc SQUID. Depending on the type of asymmetry, we obtain a
rocking or a simultaneously rocking and flashing ratchet, the latter showing
multiple sign reversals in the mean voltage with increasing amplitude of the ac
current. Our experimental results are in agreement with numerical solutions of
the Langevin equations for the asymmetric dc SQUID.Comment: 10 pages including 5 Postscript figure
Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory beam tube component and module leak testing
Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) is a joint project of the California Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology funded by the National Science Foundation. The project is designed to detect gravitational waves from astrophysical sources such as supernova and black holes. The LIGO project constructed observatories at two sites in the U.S. Each site includes two beam tubes (each 4 km long) joined to form an "L" shape. The beam tube is a 1.25 m diam 304 L stainless steel, ultrahigh vacuum tube that will operate at 1×10^–9 Torr or better. The beam tube was manufactured using a custom spiral weld tube mill from material processed to reduce the outgassing rate in order to minimize pumping costs. The integrity of the beam tube was assured by helium mass spectrometer leak testing each component of the beam tube system prior to installation. Each 2 km long, isolatable beam tube module was then leak tested after completion
