    Dust in a few southern H II regions

    The property of dust in four southern H II region/molecular cloud complexes (RCW 108, RCW 57, RCW 122, and G351.6-1.3) was discussed. These regions were observed at an effective wavelength of 150 micron using TIFR balloon borne 1 m telescope and deconvolved maps with a resolution of 1 min were obtained. The data were combined with other available data to derive the properties of the infrared emitting dust in these regions

    Distribution of dust in W31 complex

    W31 is a H II region/molecular cloud complex in the galactic plane at a distance of 6 Kpc. This complex consists of two prominent radio continuum sources (G10.2-0.3 and G10.3-0.1) representing H II regions. An extended region covering both these H II regions was mapped in the Far IR (FIR) using the TIFR 1 m balloon-borne telescope with an angular resolution of approx. 1 min and a dynamic range of 100. The resulting flux density distribution at an effective wavelength of 160 microns is presented. The coadded IRAS survey scan data at 60 and 100 microns were deconvolved using a maximum entropy method to generate the flux density maps of the same region. These 60 and 100 micron maps are given and are briefly discussed

    Far-infrared observations of Circinus and NGC 4945 galaxies

    Circinus and NGC 4945 are two galaxies luminous in the infrared and are characterized by compact non thermal radio nuclei, deep silicate absorption features and unusually strong water vapor maser luminosities. Moorwood and Glass (1984) have observed these galaxies extensively in the 1 to 20 micron range. In the far-infrared, observations up to 100 microns are available from the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS). In order to study the cool dust component of these galaxies, researchers observed them at 150 microns using the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) 100 cm balloon-borne telescope. Here, they report observations along with deconvolved maps at 50 and 100 microns obtained from the Chopped Photometric Channel (CPC) on board IRAS

    Experimental investigation of ball bearing lubrication conditions by shock pulse method

    Lubricant (grease) is a vital requirement of ball bearing system. Grease not only protects ball bearing from wear and tear but performs various other functions that are essential for proper functioning of ball bearings. The lubricant (grease) under different conditions attains different properties which in turn affect the performance of the ball bearings. The effect of the condition of the lubricants on the performance of the ball bearings is well documented. the work reports about the investigation of ball bearing using shock pulse method by using two different instruments (Tester T2000 Model and Shock Pulse Meter 43A) of different operating conditions of ball bearing the condition such as used the quantity of grease as different percentage (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) and bad quality grease (burn grease) at different rpm at a fixed load (10kg) and compare the normalized shock pulse value (dB) at different operating conditions. This method uses a piezo-electric accelerometer superimposed electrically as well as mechanically to about 32 kHz of resonant frequency. The result will help in bearing related to quantity as well as quality condition based maintenance choosing the optimum conditions for detecting the lubricant problem in ball bearing

    Far Infrared Study of IRAS 00494+5617 & IRAS 05327-0457

    High angular resolution far-infrared observations at 143 & 185 \micron, using the TIFR 1-m balloon borne telescope, are presented for two Galactic star forming complexes associated with IRAS 00494+5617 and 05327-0457. The latter map also reveals the cold dust in OMC-3. The HIRES processed IRAS maps at 12, 25, 60 & 100 micron have also been presented for comparison. Both these regions are illuminated at the edges by high mass stars with substantial UV flux.The present study is aimed at quantifying the role of the nearby stars vis-a-vis embedded young stellar objects in the overall heating of these sources. Based on the FIR observations at 143 & 185 micron carried out simultaneously with almost identical angular resolution, reliable dust temperature and optical depth maps have been generated for the brighter regions of these sources. Radiative transfer modeling in spherical geometry has been carried out to extract physical parameters of these sources by considering the observational constraints like : spectral energy distribution, angular size at different wavelengths, dust temperature distribution etc. It has been concluded that for both IRAS 00494+5617 and IRAS 05327-0457, the embedded energy sources play the major role in heating them with finite contribution from the nearby stars. The best fit model for IRAS 00494+5617 is consistent with a simple two phase clump-interclump picture with ∼\sim 5% volume filling factor (of clumps) and a density contrast of ≈\approx 80

    Bone mineral parameters in healthy young Indian adults with optimal vitamin D availability

    Background: Several recent studies indicate a marked prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in asymptomatic, apparently healthy urban subjects from different socioeconomic groups in north India. Methods: To further examine this trend, we studied 40 men and 50 women, 20–30 years of age, from the Indian paramilitary forces. These individuals consume a nutritious, high-protein diet, have optimal exposure to sunlight and undertake strenuous outdoor physical exercise. Results: The mean serum calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase levels were normal in both men and women. The mean (SD) serum intact parathyroid hormone and 25-hydroxy-vitamin D3 levels were 19.3 (8.2) pg/ml and 18.4 (5.3) ng/ml in men, and 11.9 (6.6) pg/ml and 25.3 (7.4) ng/ml in women. Bone mineral density estimated in 20 men and 22 women revealed that in comparison with white Caucasians, 35%–50% of men and 14%–32% of women were osteopenic at different sites, while an additional 10% of men had osteoporosis of the lumbar spine. Conclusion: We found that with optimal nutrition, good sunlight exposure and regular physical exercise, healthy young individuals have normal bone and mineral biochemical values. The reasons for the abnormalities detected in bone mineral density in them needs further study. The impact of childhood nutrition on accumulation of peak bone mass may contribute to our findings. There is a need for establishing normative bone mineral density data for Indians
