    The Noncommutative Anandan's Quantum Phase

    Get PDF
In this work we study the noncommutative nonrelativistic quantum dynamics of a neutral particle, that possesses permanent magnetic and electric dipole momenta, in the presence of an electric and magnetic fields. We use the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation of the Dirac spinor with a non-minimal coupling to obtain the nonrelativistic limit. In this limit, we will study the noncommutative quantum dynamics and obtain the noncommutative Anandan's geometric phase. We analyze the situation where magnetic dipole moment of the particle is zero and we obtain the noncommutative version of the He-McKellar-Wilkens effect. We demonstrate that this phase in the noncommutative case is a geometric dispersive phase. We also investigate this geometric phase considering the noncommutativity in the phase space and the Anandan's phase is obtained.Comment: 15 pages, revtex4, version to appear in Physical Review

Hydrophobic modification of cashew gum with alkenyl succinic anhydride.

Cashew gum (CG) shows promise of being useful as an agro-based raw material for the production of eco-friendly and biodegradable polymers. In this work, we modified this water-soluble polymer with alkenyl succinic anhydride in order to attach a hydrophobic group to it. The modification used two reagents: octenyl succinic anhydride and tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride. Reactions were conducted at 120 °C using dimethyl sulfoxide as a solvent, with conversions better than 88%. Samples with degrees of substitution (DS) between 0.02 and 0.20 were made. The resulting polymers were characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, TGA, and GPC. The addition of the hydrophobe decreased the affinity of cashew gum for water absorption. Hydrophobically modified polysaccharides are often used as polymeric emulsifiers, thickeners, and compatibilizers; we anticipate that these new hydrophobically modified CGs may be used for the same applications

Abstract: The protein identification is an alternative in order to understand the seminal plasma and spermatozoid interaction. Concerning to ovine specie and specially the Morada Nova breed, are rare the works found in literature related to these animals. It were utilized four adults animals at reproductive aging where it was collected semen weekly during the transition rainy/dry period related to months of Juky and August, in the North region of Ceará State. It was observed the presence of 20 and 19 proteins bands on July and August with molecular weight varying from 22 to 115 and from 20 to 98 kDa, respectively. It were identified proteins with molecular weight of 97, 79, 66, 55, 42, 29 and 22 kDa along the period studied. Aimed to evaluate the variation of seminal plasma protein present in the transition period wetdry sheep Morada Nova

Falsifying Tree Level String Motivated Bouncing Cosmologies

The string effective action at tree level contains, in its bosonic sector, the Einstein-Hilbert term, the dilaton, and the axion, besides scalar and gauge fields coming from the Ramond-Ramond sector. The reduction to four dimensions brings to scene moduli fields. We generalize this effective action by introducing two arbitrary parameters, ω\omega and mm, connected with the dilaton and axion couplings. In this way, more general frameworks can be analyzed. Regular solutions with a bounce can be obtained for a range of (negative) values of the parameter ω\omega which, however, exclude the pure string configuration (ω=1\omega = - 1). We study the evolution of scalar perturbations in such cosmological scenarios. The predicted primordial power spectrum decreases with the wavenumber with spectral index ns=2n_s=-2, in contradiction with the results of the WMAPWMAP. Hence, all such effective string motivated cosmological bouncing models seem to be ruled out, at least at the tree level approximation.Comment: Latex file, 19 pages, 3 figures in eps forma

Characteristics and pathways of long-stay patients in high and medium secure settings in England; a secondary publication from a large mixed-methods study

Background: Many patients experience extended stays within forensic care, but the characteristics of long-stay patients are poorly understood. Aims: To describe the characteristics of long-stay patients in high and medium secure settings in England. Method: Detailed file reviews provided clinical, offending and risk data for a large representative sample of 401 forensic patients from 2 of the 3 high secure settings and from 23 of the 57 medium secure settings in England on 1 April 2013. The threshold for long-stay status was defined as 5 years in medium secure care or 10 years in high secure care, or 15 years in a combination of high and medium secure settings. Results: 22% of patients in high security and 18% in medium security met the definition for “long-stay,” with 20% staying longer than 20 years. Of the long-stay sample, 58% were violent offenders (22% both sexual and violent), 27% had been convicted for violent or sexual offences whilst in an institutional setting, and 26% had committed a serious assault on staff in the last 5 years. The most prevalent diagnosis was schizophrenia (60%) followed by personality disorder (47%, predominantly antisocial and borderline types); 16% were categorised as having an intellectual disability. Overall, 7% of the long-stay sample had never been convicted of any offence, and 16.5% had no index offence prompting admission. Although some significant differences were found between the high and medium secure samples, there were more similarities than contrasts between these two levels of security. The treatment pathways of these long-stay patients involved multiple moves between settings. An unsuccessful referral to a setting of lower security was recorded over the last 5 years for 33% of the sample. Conclusions: Long-stay patients accounted for one fifth of the forensic inpatient population in England in this representative sample. A significant proportion of this group remain unsettled. High levels of personality pathology and the risk of assaults on staff and others within the care setting are likely to impact on treatment and management. Further research into the treatment pathways of longer stay patients is warranted to understand the complex trajectories of this group
