    Gravitational clustering in N-body simulations

    In this talk we discuss some of the main theoretical problems in the understanding of the statistical properties of gravity. By means of N-body simulations we approach the problem of understanding the r\^ole of gravity in the clustering of a finite set of N-interacting particles which samples a portion of an infinite system. Through the use of the conditional average density, we study the evolution of the clustering for the system putting in evidence some interesting and not yet understood features of the process.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Clustering in N-Body gravitating systems

    Self-gravitating systems have acquired growing interest in statistical mechanics, due to the peculiarities of the 1/r potential. Indeed, the usual approach of statistical mechanics cannot be applied to a system of many point particles interacting with the Newtonian potential, because of (i) the long range nature of the 1/r potential and of (ii) the divergence at the origin. We study numerically the evolutionary behavior of self-gravitating systems with periodical boundary conditions, starting from simple initial conditions. We do not consider in the simulations additional effects as the (cosmological) metric expansion and/or sophisticated initial conditions, since we are interested whether and how gravity by itself can produce clustered structures. We are able to identify well defined correlation properties during the evolution of the system, which seem to show a well defined thermodynamic limit, as opposed to the properties of the ``equilibrium state''.     Children's exposure to Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate and dibutylphthalate plasticizers from school meals.

    Packed school meals for children 310 years old were studied to evaluate the levels of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butylphthalate (DBP) and the influence of the packaging process on meal contamination, and their contribution to daily intake was estimated. The packaging consisted of polyethylene-coated aluminum (PE/Al) dishes thermally welded by a polyethyleneterephthalate-coated aluminum (PET/Al) foil. Foodstuffs before processing were analyzed, too. Total meals before packaging and after packaging were collected. It was found that 92% of foodstuffs employed in meal preparation contained DEHP, and 76% of them DBP, at detectable levels. In cooked foods before packaging the DEHP median concentration levels varied from 111.4 to 154.8 ng/g ww and those of DBP between 32.5 and 59.5 ng/g ww. In packed meals the DEHP median values ranged from 127.0 to 253.3 ng/g ww, and DBP median values varied from 44.1 to 80.5 ng/g ww. The mean increases of median concentrations of DEHP in cooked foods before and after packaging were 113 and 125% for DBP

    Search of sub-parsec massive binary black holes through line diagnosis II

    Massive black hole binaries at sub-parsec separations may display in their spectra anomalously small flux ratios between the MgII and CIV broad emission lines, i.e. F_MgII/F_CIV <~ 0.1, due to the erosion of the broad line region around the active, secondary black hole, by the tidal field of the primary. In Paper I by Montuori et al. (2011), we focussed on broad lines emitted by gas bound to the lighter accreting member of a binary when the binary is at the center of a hollow density region (the gap) inside a circum-binary disc. The main aim of this new study is at exploring the potential contribution to the broad line emission by the circum-binary disc and by gaseous streams flowing toward the black hole through the gap. We carry out a post-process analysis of data extracted from a SPH simulation of a circum-binary disc around a black hole binary. Our main result is that the MgII to CIV flux ratio can be reduced to ~ 0.1 within an interval of sub-pc binary separations of the order of a ~ (0.01-0.2)(f_Edd/0.1)^(1/2) pc corresponding to orbital periods of ~ (20-200) (f_Edd/0.1)^(3/4) years for a secondary BH mass in the range M_2 ~ 10^7-10^9 M_sun and a binary mass ratio of 0.3. At even closer separations this ratio returns to increase to values that are indistinguishable from the case of a single AGN (typically F_MgII/F_CIV ~ 0.3-0.4) because of the contribution to the MgII line from gas in the circum-binary disc.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Improvements in the methylmercury extraction from human hair by solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography coupled to cold-vapour atomic fluorescence spectrometry (GC-CVAFS) have been carried out. They consisted in the optimisation of the digestion step prior to the aqueous-phase ethylation and in the GC-CVAFS interface set-up. The main digestion parameters such as acid type, concentration, temperature and time have been optimised for hair sample analysis, thereby avoiding methylmercury degradation.     A rapid and simple fractionation procedure using solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges was developed for an accurate determination of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in petroleum residues and further application in chemical fingerprinting of oil spills by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Among the adsorbents evaluated, SiO2/C3-CN exhibited the best selectivity, providing, by elution with n-hexane (4 ml) and n-hexane-CH2Cl2 (1:1) (5 ml), two well-resolved aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon fractions, with recoveries of 97 +/- 7.2 and 99.7 +/- 13.9%, respectively. The SPE fractionation procedure was compared with the conventional silica-alumina adsorption chromatography showing similar results but practical advantages in terms of reproducibility, analysis time, solvent reduction and cost. Moreover, is particularly suitable for routine analysis with a high sample throughput. The developed methodology was tested in the characterization of fuel-oil samples collected along the Spanish north-west coast, after the Prestige oil spill accident

    Ready-to-eat packed meals intended to hospital patients were studied over a two-weeks period to measure the contents of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butylphthalate (DBP) and to evaluate their daily intake by total diet. The packaging consisted of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) dishes sealed with polypropylene (PP) foil. The DEHP mean concentrations in total meals varied from 0.061 ± 0.028 to 0.307 ± 0.138 μg/g. wet. weight (wet wt.); the DBP mean levels varied from 0.025 ± 0.018 to 0.174 ± 0.091 μg/g. wet. wt. Highest levels of concentration for DEHP and DBP were found in bread with mean values of 0.307 ± 0.138 μg/g. wet. wt. and 0.174 ± 0.091 μg/g. wet. wt. for DEHP and DBP, respectively. The daily intake for DEHP was 3.1 ± 0.9 μg/kg. bw and 1.5 ± 0.5 μg/kg. bw for DBP.The mean ± sd incidence of DEHP and DBP intake via hospital meals on the respective EFSA TDI was 6 ± 2% (range 4-11%), and 15 ± 5% (range 8-24%), respectively. Even if for hospital patients the major route of exposure may be represented by medical devices, the influence of the diet could have a significant value on TD

    Environmental pollution from illegal waste disposal and health effects: A review on the triangle of Death.

    The term “triangle of death” was used for the first time by Senior and Mazza in the journal The Lancet Oncology referring to the eastern area of the Campania Region (Southern Italy) which has one of the worst records of illegal waste dumping practices. In the past decades, many studies have focused on the potential of illegal waste disposal to cause adverse effects on human health in this area. The great heterogeneity in the findings, and the bias in media communication has generated great healthcare doubts, anxieties and alarm. This paper addresses a review of the up-to-date literature on the “triangle of death”, bringing together the available information on the occurrence and severity of health effects related to illegal waste disposal. The Scopus database was searched using the search terms “waste”, “Campania”, “Naples”, “triangle of death” and “human biomonitoring”. Despite the methodological and sampling heterogeneity between the studies, this review examines the evidence from published data concerning cancer incidence, childhood mortality and birth defects, so that the current situation, knowledge gaps and research priorities can be established. The review aims to provide a contribution to the scientific community, and to respond to the concerns of the general population
