Effect of disorder studied with ferromagnetic resonance for arrays of tangentially magnetized sub-micron Permalloy discs fabricated by nanosphere lithography
Tangentially magnetized trigonal arrays of sub-micron Permalloy discs are
characterized with ferromagnetic resonance to determine the possible
contributions to frequency and linewidth from array disorder. Each array is
fabricated by a water-surface self-assembly lithographic technique, and
consists of a large trigonal array of 700 nm diameter magnetic discs. Each
array is characterized by a different degree of ordering. Two modes are present
in the ferromagnetic resonance spectra: a large amplitude, `fundamental' mode
and a lower amplitude mode at higher field. Angular dependence of the resonance
field in a very well ordered array is found to be negligible for both modes.
The relationship between resonance frequency and applied magnetic field is
found to be uncorrelated with array disorder. Linewidth is found to increase
with increasing array disorder

Fast Mesh Refinement in Pseudospectral Optimal Control
Mesh refinement in pseudospectral (PS) optimal control is embarrassingly easy
--- simply increase the order of the Lagrange interpolating polynomial and
the mathematics of convergence automates the distribution of the grid points.
Unfortunately, as increases, the condition number of the resulting linear
algebra increases as ; hence, spectral efficiency and accuracy are lost in
practice. In this paper, we advance Birkhoff interpolation concepts over an
arbitrary grid to generate well-conditioned PS optimal control discretizations.
We show that the condition number increases only as in general, but
is independent of for the special case of one of the boundary points being
fixed. Hence, spectral accuracy and efficiency are maintained as increases.
The effectiveness of the resulting fast mesh refinement strategy is
demonstrated by using \underline{polynomials of over a thousandth order} to

Neonatal weight loss in breast and formula-fed infants
We have observed an increase in the number of breast fed babies presenting with dehydration and/or failure to thrive because of lactation failure and non-recognition of feeding problems. Recent reports1,2 support this experience and recommend monitoring of the weight of infants through the neonatal period. However, these reports acknowledge uncertainty as to what actually constitutes normal neonatal weight loss. Maisels and colleagues published two studies which have been quoted as giving guidance on normal loss. Both studies were designed primarily to study factors that influence breast milk jaundice. The first3 reported a mean weight loss of about 6% in 100 unselected well babies during the first 3 days. The subsequent study4 reported a mean weight loss of 6.86% in 186 infants. The timescale over which babies were weighed was not clearly indicated, although it may have only been 2-3 days. The sample was neither population based nor randomly selected, being largely preselected because of the presence of more pronounced jaundice. The distribution of data points for early neonatal weight loss are likely to be skewed, yet both studies reported the results as mean (SD). Owing to the design and method of data presentation, these studies cannot reliably inform the debate as to what constitutes the norm. Marchini and colleagues published reports also designed primarily to study other issues. One5 indicated a mean early weight loss of 5.7%. Measurements were recorded over a three day period, and no indication is given of the skewness of the data. Another study6 reported a median weight loss of about 6% recorded over a four day period. At least one baby lost > 15% of his/her birth weight during this time, but there is no clear information as to the frequency with which more extreme degrees of weight loss are observed
C60 adsorption on an aperiodically modulated Cu surface
Copper deposited on the ve-fold surface of icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn forms domains of a structure whose surface has a one-dimensional aperiodic modulation. It is shown that C60
deposited on this aperiodic film has highly reduced mobility as compared to C60 deposited on periodic Cu surfaces. This fnding is explained in terms of the recently proposed structural model of this system
UV Imaging Polarimetry of the Seyfert 2 Galaxy Mrk 3
We present UV imaging polarimetry data of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 taken by
the Hubble Space Telescope. The polarized flux is found to be extended to ~1
kpc from the nucleus, and the position angles of polarization are
centrosymmetric, confirming that the polarization is caused by scattering. We
determine the location of the hidden nucleus as the center of this
centrosymmetric pattern. From the polarization images taken in two broad bands,
we have obtained the color distribution of the polarized flux. Some regions
have blue polarized flux, consistent with optically-thin dust scattering, but
some bright knots have a color similar to that of Seyfert 1 nucleus. Also, the
recent Chandra X-ray observation suggests that the ratio of scattered UV flux
to scattered X-ray flux is rather similar to the intrinsic UV/X-ray ratio in a
Seyfert 1 nucleus, if the observed extended X-ray continuum is scattered light.
While the scattered X-ray would be essentially from electron scattering, the UV
slope and UV/X-ray ratio both being similar to Seyfert 1's would lead to two
possibilities as to the nature of the UV scatterers. One is that the UV may
also be scattered by electrons, in which case the scattering gas is somehow
dust-free. The other is that the UV is scattered by dust grains, but the
wavelength-independent UV scattering with low efficiency indicated by the UV
slope and UV/X-ray ratio would suggest that the grains reside in UV-opaque
clouds, or the dust might be mainly composed of large grains and lacks

Nucleation and growth of a quasicrystalline monolayer: Bi adsorption on the five-fold surface of i-Al70Pd21Mn9
Scanning tunnelling microscopy has been used to study the formation of a Bi
monolayer deposited on the five-fold surface of i-Al70Pd21Mn9. Upon deposition
of low sub-monolayer coverages, the nucleation of pentagonal clusters of Bi
adatoms of edge length 4.9 A is observed. The clusters have a common
orientation leading to a film with five-fold symmetry. By inspection of images
where both the underlying surface and the Bi atoms are resolved, the pentagonal
clusters are found to nucleate on pseudo-Mackay clusters truncated such that a
Mn atom lies centrally in the surface plane. The density of these sites is
sufficient to form a quasiperiodic framework, and subsequent adsorption of Bi
atoms ultimately leads to the formation of a quasicrystalline monolayer. The
initial nucleation site is different to that proposed on the basis of recent
