Dementia, music and biometric gaming: Rising to the Dementia Challenge

    Get PDF
In 2012, the U.K. government launched its Dementia Challenge, authorizing additional funding for dementia research and health care. The search for curative medicines is ongoing, but scientific research reveals evidence that music can play a positive role in general health, and in dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in particular. This article considers whether some of the challenges that dementia presents could be addressed through music therapy and proposes that biometric gaming might offer one means of channeling such associated health benefits to sufferers of dementia, even in the final stages of the disease

The effect of wall cooling on a compressible turbulent boundary layer

Experimental results are presented for two turbulent boundary-layer experiments conducted at a free-stream Mach number of 4 with wall cooling. The first experiment examines a constant-temperature cold-wall boundary layer subjected to adverse and favourable pressure gradients. It is shown that the boundary-layer data display good agreement with Coles’ general composite boundary-layer profile using Van Driest's transformation. Further, the pressure-gradient parameter β_K found in previous studies to correlate adiabatic high-speed data with low-speed data also correlates the present cooled-wall high-speed data. The second experiment treats the response of a constant-pressure high-speed boundary layer to a near step change in wall temperature. It is found that the growth rate of the thermal boundary layer within the existing turbulent boundary layer varies considerably depending upon the direction of the wall temperature change. For the case of an initially cooled boundary layer flowing onto a wall near the recovery temperature, it is found that δ_T ~ x whereas the case of an adiabatic boundary layer flowing onto a cooled wall gives δ_T ~ x^½. The apparent origin of the thermal boundary layer also changes considerably, which is accounted for by the variation in sublayer thicknesses and growth rates within the sublayer

An experiment on the adiabatic compressible turbulent boundary layer in adverse and favourable pressure gradients

A wind-tunnel model was developed to study the two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer in adverse and favourable pressure gradients with out the effects of streamwise surface curvature. Experiments were performed at Mach 4 with an adiabatic wall, and mean flow measurements within the boundary layer were obtained. The data, when viewed in the velocity transformation suggested by Van Driest, show good general agreement with the composite boundary-layer profile developed for the low-speed turbulent boundary layer. Moreover, the pressure gradient parameter suggested by Alber & Coats was found to correlate the data with low-speed results

Accretion Disk Spectra of the Ultra-luminous X-ray Sources in Nearby Spiral Galaxies and Galactic Superluminal Jet Sources

Ultra-luminous Compact X-ray Sources (ULXs) in nearby spiral galaxies and Galactic superluminal jet sources share the common spectral characteristic that they have unusually high disk temperatures which cannot be explained in the framework of the standard optically thick accretion disk in the Schwarzschild metric. On the other hand, the standard accretion disk around the Kerr black hole might explain the observed high disk temperature, as the inner radius of the Kerr disk gets smaller and the disk temperature can be consequently higher. However, we point out that the observable Kerr disk spectra becomes significantly harder than Schwarzschild disk spectra only when the disk is highly inclined. This is because the emission from the innermost part of the accretion disk is Doppler-boosted for an edge-on Kerr disk, while hardly seen for a face-on disk. The Galactic superluminal jet sources are known to be highly inclined systems, thus their energy spectra may be explained with the standard Kerr disk with known black hole masses. For ULXs, on the other hand, the standard Kerr disk model seems implausible, since it is highly unlikely that their accretion disks are preferentially inclined, and, if edge-on Kerr disk model is applied, the black hole mass becomes unreasonably large (> 300 M_solar). Instead, the slim disk (advection dominated optically thick disk) model is likely to explain the observed super-Eddington luminosities, hard energy spectra, and spectral variations of ULXs. We suggest that ULXs are accreting black holes with a few tens of solar mass, which is not unexpected from the standard stellar evolution scenario, and that their X-ray emission is from the slim disk shining at super-Eddington luminosities.Comment: ApJ, accepte

Preliminary Results on gamma gamma -> Ks K pi from CLEO

We analyzed 13.8 fb^{-1} of the integrated e+e- luminosity collected at 10.6 GeV center-of-mass energy with the CLEO II and II.V detectors to study exclusive two-photon production of single hadronic resonances. We searched for hadrons decaying into Ks K pi when both leptons remain undetected. In this analysis we studied the detection efficiency and evaluated systematic errors using independent data samples. We estimated 90% CL upper limits on the products of the two-photon partial widths of (pseudo)scalar hadrons with masses below 1.7 GeV/c2 and their branching fractions into Ks K pi. Our preliminary results are marginally consistent with the first observation of eta(1440) in two-photon collisions by the L3 experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, proceedings contribution for PANIC'0
