The study of the ecology and natural history of species has traditionally ceased when a species goes extinct, despite the benefit to current and future generations of potential findings. We used the extinct Carolina parakeet as a case study to develop a framework investigating the distributional limits, subspecific variation, and migratory habits of this species as a means to recover important information about recently extinct species. We united historical accounts with museum collections to develop an exhaustive, comprehensive database of every known occurrence of this once iconic species. With these data, we combined species distribution models and ordinal niche comparisons to confront multiple conjectured hypotheses about the parakeet's ecology with empirical data on where and when this species occurred. Our results demonstrate that the Carolina parakeet's range was likely much smaller than previously believed, that the eastern and western subspecies occupied different climatic niches with broad geographical separation, and that the western subspecies was likely a seasonal migrant while the eastern subspecies was not. This study highlights the novelty and importance of collecting occurrence data from published observations on extinct species, providing a starting point for future investigations of the factors that drove the Carolina parakeet to extinction. Moreover, the recovery of lost autecological knowledge could benefit the conservation of other parrot species currently in decline and would be crucial to the success of potential de-extinction efforts for the Carolina parakeet

The death of massive stars - II. Observational constraints on the progenitors of type Ibc supernovae
The progenitors of many type II core-collapse supernovae have now been
identified directly on pre-discovery imaging. Here we present an extensive
search for the progenitors of type Ibc supernovae in all available
pre-discovery imaging since 1998. There are 12 type Ibc supernovae with no
detections of progenitors in either deep ground-based or Hubble Space Telescope
archival imaging. The deepest absolute BVR magnitude limits are between -4 and
-5. We compare these limits with the observed Wolf-Rayet population in the
Large Magellanic Cloud and estimate a 16 per cent probability we have failed to
detect such a progenitor by chance. Alternatively the progenitors evolve
significantly before core-collapse or we have underestimated the extinction
towards the progenitors. Reviewing the relative rates and ejecta mass estimates
from lightcurve modelling of Ibc SNe, we find both incompatible with Wolf-Rayet
stars with initial masses >25Msun being the only progenitors. We present binary
evolution models that fit these observational constraints. Stars in binaries
with initial masses <20Msun lose their hydrogen envelopes in binary
interactions to become low mass helium stars. They retain a low mass hydrogen
envelope until approximately 10,000 years before core-collapse; hence it is not

Scramjet sidewall burning: Preliminary shock tunnel results
Experiments performed with a two dimensional model scramjet with particular emphasis on the effect of fuel injection from a wall are reported. Air low with a nominal Mach number of 3.5 and varied enthalpies was produced. It was found that neither hydrogen injection angle nor combustor divergence angle had any appreciable effect on thrust values while increased combustor length appeared to increase thrust levels. Specific impulse was observed to peak when hydrogen was injected at an equivalence ratio of about 2. Lowering the Mach number of the injected hydrogen at low equivalence ratios, less than 4, appeared to benefit specific impulse while hydrogen Mach number had little effect at higher equivalence ratios. When a 1:1 mixture by volume of nitrogen and oxygen is used instead of air as a test gas, it is found that hydrogen combustion is enhanced but only at high enthalpies
The Charger: A Case Study Of Leadership Decisions And The Oxford High School Student Newspaper
This case study uses qualitative interviews with administrators, advisers, former editors, and others, along with researcher observations and more than 50 years of archival documents to construct a comprehensive portrait of the history, successes, and challenges of the student newspaper program at Oxford High School, and how administrative decision making has affected that success and vice versa. The OHS student newspaper, called the Charger since the late 1980s, has consistently ranked at or near the top of the best high school newspapers in Mississippi and has at times been named one of the top high school newspapers in the nation. The study finds that neither the Charger nor its forerunners have ever been subject to any type of administrative prior review or restraint, and, not unrelated, finds the newspaper to have had a significant impact on the school, community, and the students whose charge it has been to produce and publish it. The study identifies a successive series of school leaders who have valued the program, committed resources to it, and entrusted students with the autonomy to report on school and community issues, even/especially uncomfortable ones, without fear of interference or reprisal from above. This hands-off philosophy of leadership has at times led to conflicts over unsavory coverage and has strained relationships between school leaders and the journalism adviser/staff, all of which is also detailed and analyzed in the study
