    Path, theme and narrative in open plan exhibition settings

    Three arguments are made based on the analysis of science exhibitions. First,sufficiently refined techniques of spatial analysis allow us to model the impact oflayout upon visitors' paths, even in moderately sized open plans which allow almostrandom patterns of movement and relatively unobstructed visibility. Second, newlydeveloped or adapted techniques of analysis allow us to make a transition frommodeling the mechanics of spatial movement (the way in which movement is affectedby the distribution of obstacles and boundaries), to modeling the manner in whichmovement might register additional aspects of visual information. Third, theadvantages of such purely spatial modes of analysis extend into providing us with asharper understanding of some of the pragmatic constrains within which exhibitioncontent is conceived and designed

    Design of an integrated shallow water wave experiment

    The experimental design and instrumentation for an integrated shallow-water surface gravity wave experiment is discussed. The experiment required the measurement of the water surface elevation, meteorological parameters, and directional spectra at a number of locations on a shallow lake. In addition, to acquire data under a wide range of conditions, an experimental period of three years was required. A system of telephone and radio modem links were installed to enable real-time monitoring of instrument performance at eight separate measurement locations on the lake.     Decoherence Rates in Large Scale Quantum Computers and Macroscopic Systems

    Markovian regime decoherence effects in quantum computers are studied in terms of the fidelity for the situation where the number of qubits N becomes large. A general expression giving the decoherence time scale in terms of Markovian relaxation elements and expectation values of products of system fluctuation operators is obtained, which could also be applied to study decoherence in other macroscopic systems such as Bose condensates and superconductors. A standard circuit model quantum computer involving three-state lambda system ionic qubits is considered, with qubits localised around well-separated positions via trapping potentials. The centre of mass vibrations of the qubits act as a reservoir. Coherent one and two qubit gating processes are controlled by time dependent localised classical electromagnetic fields that address specific qubits, the two qubit gating processes being facilitated by a cavity mode ancilla, which permits state interchange between qubits.     Implications of government funding of advocacy for third-sector independence and exploration of alternative advocacy funding models

    This paper examines the effect of funding contracts on the capacity of third-sector organizations to effectively advocate. The relationship is not simple or obvious, with some organizations reporting 'mature relationships' with particular (state) departments, and others reporting difficulty with state or federal government jurisdictions. The paper spells out the negative effects of conflating service funding and advocacy. The paper concludes by exploring alternative institutional arrangements for the resourcing of advocacy including the establishment of a Public Interest Fund administered independently of any government department, one not requiring specific service contracts but rather evidence that it is advocating for the broader public good

    In this work, we give a description of the process of teleportation between Alice in an inertial frame, and Rob who is in uniform acceleration with respect to Alice. The fidelity of the teleportation is reduced due to Unruh radiation in Rob's frame.     The focus of this study is the national policy problem of the gap between housing supply and demand, as identified and monitored by the National Housing Supply Council. Research to date has not focused upon the spatial distribution of labour supply and demand of the housing sector labour force (HSLF). Also research to date has not distinguished between labour engaged in building new dwellings and labour engaged in undertaking alterations and additions. In addressing this research gap, this Final Report presents the summative output of the AHURI research project entitled: Understanding the patterns, characteristics and trends in the housing sector labour force in Australia. It follows the publication of the Positioning Paper for the project (Dalton et al. 2011a).This chapter has presented a response to the secondary research question: What are the temporal dimensions of the HSLF as a whole and the new build and alterations and additions sub-sectors? It first described the categories, containing records of workers who worked in the housing industry, which were used to interrogate the census data. Using these categories, the data presented showed that, in aggregate, the size of the HSLF grew in the period 2001-06. In Victoria, the workforce grew from 72 000 to 89 000, an increase of 23 per cent in the five-year period 2001-06. The 44 per cent growth in the Queensland workforce was almost twice that of Victoria for the same period when it grew from 53 000 to 77 000. This aggregate data was then split to distinguish between workers who worked on 'new build' housing and those who worked on 'alterations and additions'. The results of this splitting showed that there had been growth in both sub-sectors. The rate of growth in the alterations and additions sub-sector was greater than for the new build sector, although this growth was from a lower base

    Environmental Dependence of the Fundamental Plane of Galaxy Clusters

    Galaxy clusters approximate a planar (FP) distribution in a three-dimensional parameter space which can be characterized by optical luminosity, half-light radius, and X-ray luminosity. Using a high-quality catalog of cluster redshifts, we find the nearest neighbor cluster for those common to an FP study and the cluster catalog. Examining scatter about the FP, we find 99.2% confidence that it is dependent on nearest neighbor distance. Our study of X-Ray clusters finds that those with high central gas densities are systematically closer to neighbor clusters. If we combine results here with those of Fritsch and Buchert, we find an explanation for some of our previous conclusions: Clusters in close proximity to other clusters are more likely to have massive cooling flows because they are more relaxed and have higher central gas densities.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters. This unique subset of patients requires a multidisciplinary approach with a knowledge-based care team that can demonstrate awareness of complications specific to Parkinson’s disease to reduce critical care admissions, morbidity, and mortality. Early recognition of toxic exposures, medication withdrawals, or medication-induced symptoms can reduce morbidity and mortality. This review can assist in the critical assessment of new or exacerbating Parkinson’s disease symptoms
