    Coupled aerodynamic and acoustical predictions for turboprops

    To predict the noise fields for proposed turboprop airplanes, an existing turboprop noise code by Farassat has been modified to accept blade pressure inputs from a three-dimensional aerodynamic code. A Euler-type code can handle the nonlinear transonic flow of these high-speed, highly swept blades. This turbofan code was modified to allow the calculation mesh to extend to about twice the blade radius and to apply circumferential periodicity rather than solid-wall boundary conditions on the blade in the region between the blade tip and the outer shroud. Outputs were added for input to the noise prediction program and for color contour plots of various flow variables. The Farassat input subroutines were modified to read files of blade coordinates and predicted surface pressures. Aerodynamic and acoustic results are shown for the SR-3 model blade.     Rapid Detection of Leishmania infantum Infection in Dogs: Comparative Study Using an Immunochromatographic Dipstick Test, Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay, and PCR

    Current zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) control programs in Brazil include the culling of Leishmania infantum-infected reservoir dogs, a strategy that has failed to prevent a rise of canine and human ZVL cases over the past decade. One of the main reasons this strategy has failed is because of a long delay between sample collection, sample analysis, and control implementation. A rapid, sensitive, and specific diagnostic tool would be highly desirable, because it would allow control interventions to be implemented in situ. We compared an immunochromatographic dipstick test to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and PCR for detecting L. infantum infections in dogs from an area of ZVL endemicity in Brazil. The dipstick test was shown to have 61 to 75% specificity and 72 to 77% sensitivity, compared to 100% specificity for both ELISA and PCR and 71 to 88% and 51 to 64% sensitivity for ELISA and PCR, respectively. Of the field samples tested, 92 of 175 (53%), 65 of 175 (37%), and 47 of 175 (27%) were positive by dipstick, ELISA, and PCR, respectively. The positive and negative predictive values for the tested dipstick were 58 to 77% and 75%, respectively. Efforts should be made to develop a more specific dipstick test for diagnosis of leishmaniasis, because they may ultimately prove more cost-effective than currently used diagnostic tests when used in mass-screening surveys

    Contrary to recent commentary, reliance on individual faculty initiative and learned societies in setting the academic agenda has greater promise for contributing to the land grant mission than more administratively driven and dominated systems. Learned societies have the advantage in evaluating disciplinary content and are thereby the appropriate evaluators of quality. A distinguishing characteristic of all university professors should be a continuing commitment to active participation in research in support of their principle function, teaching, be their students on-campus undergraduate or graduates, off-campus clientele, or professional peers.     Ten normal hearing young adults and ten older adults were asked to identify the longer of two sequentially presented tones. The duration of the standard tones ranged from 1.5 ms to 1000 ms across blocks. Duration discrimination was not related to audiometric thresholds. These results show that older adults are much more disadvantaged than young adults when discriminating very short durations (i.e., below 40 ms) that are characteristic of speech sounds, and that this disadvantage cannot be accounted for by hearing levels

    Regional and seasonal patterns of epipelagic fish assemblages from the central California Current

    The coastal Pacific Ocean off northern and central California encompasses the strongest seasonal upwelling zone in the California Current ecosystem. Headlands and bays here generate complex circulation features and confer unusual oceanographic complexity. We sampled the coastal epipelagic fish community of this region with a surface trawl in the summer and fall of 2000–05 to assess patterns of spatial and temporal community structure. Fifty-three species of fish were captured in 218 hauls at 34 fixed stations, with clupeiform species dominating. To examine spatial patterns, samples were grouped by location relative to a prominent headland at Point Reyes and the resulting two regions, north coast and Gulf of the Farallones, were plotted by using nonmetric multidimensional scaling. Seasonal and interannual patterns were also examined, and representative species were identified for each distinct community. Seven oceanographic variables measured concurrently with trawling were plotted by principal components analysis and tested for correlation with biotic patterns. We found significant differences in community structure by region, year, and season, but no interaction among main effects. Significant differences in oceanographic conditions mirrored the biotic patterns, and a match between biotic and hydrographic structure was detected. Dissimilarity between assemblages was mostly the result of differences in abundance and frequency of occurrence of about twelve common species. Community patterns were best described by a subset of hydrographic variables, including water depth, distance from shore, and any one of several correlated variables associated with upwelling intensity. Rather than discrete communities with clear borders and distinct member species, we found gradients in community structure and identified stations with similar fish communities by region and by proximity to features such as the San Francisco Bay

    A Census of Object Types and Redshift Estimates in the SDSS Photometric Catalog from a Trained Decision-Tree Classifier

    We have applied ClassX, an oblique decision tree classifier optimized for astronomical analysis, to the homogeneous multicolor imaging data base of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), training the software on subsets of SDSS objects whose nature is precisely known via spectroscopy. We find that the software, using photometric data only, correctly classifies a very large fraction of the objects with existing SDSS spectra, both stellar and extragalactic. ClassX also accurately predicts the redshifts of both normal and active galaxies in SDSS. To illustrate ClassX applications in SDSS research, we (a) derive the object content of the SDSS DR2 photometric catalog and (b) provide a sample catalog of resolved SDSS objects that contains a large number of candidate AGN galaxies, 27,000, along with 63,000 candidate normal galaxies at magnitudes substantially fainter than typical magnitudes of SDSS spectroscopic objects. The surface density of AGN selected by ClassX to i~19 is in agreement with that quoted by SDSS. When ClassX is applied to the photometric data fainter than the SDSS spectroscopic limit, the inferred surface density of AGN rises sharply, as expected. The ability of the classifier to accurately constrain the redshifts of huge numbers (ultimately ~ 10^7) of active galaxies in the photometric data base promises new insights into fundamental issues of AGN research, such as the evolution of the AGN luminosity function with cosmic time, the starburst--AGN connection, and AGN--galactic morphology relationships.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal, Vol. 130, 2005; 33 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables, AASTeX v5.0.
