    Previous research has shown how more attractive people reap more rewards in a variety of settings. We show that attractiveness as measured by facial symmetry leads to greater rewards in professional sports. National Football League quarterbacks who are more attractive are paid greater salaries and this premium persists after controlling for player performance.

The method is an adaptation of a method of Collatz (1942), and has similarities to both the power method and the inverse power method. For large matrices it is faster than the eig routine in Matlab.     Active cloaking of finite defects for flexural waves in elastic plates

    We present a new method to create an active cloak for a rigid inclusion in a thin plate, and analyse flexural waves within such a plate governed by the Kirchhoff plate equation. We consider scattering of both a plane wave and a cylindrical wave by a single clamped inclusion of circular shape. In order to cloak the inclusion, we place control sources at small distances from the scatterer and choose their intensities to eliminate propagating orders of the scattered wave, thus reconstructing the respective incident wave. We then vary the number and position of the control sources to obtain the most effective configuration for cloaking the circular inclusion. Finally, we successfully cloak an arbitrarily shaped scatterer in a thin plate by deriving a semi-analytical, asymptotic algorithm.Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 1 tabl

    In-Chain Tunneling Through Charge-Density Wave Nanoconstrictions and Break-Junctions

    We have fabricated longitudinal nanoconstrictions in the charge-density wave conductor (CDW) NbSe3_{3} using a focused ion beam and using a mechanically controlled break-junction technique. Conductance peaks are observed below the TP1_{P1}=145=145 K and TP2_{P2}=59=59 K CDW transitions, which correspond closely with previous values of the full CDW gaps 2Δ12\Delta_{1} and 2Δ22\Delta_{2} obtained from photo-emission. These results can be explained by assuming CDW-CDW tunneling in the presence of an energy gap corrugation ϵ2\epsilon_{2} comparable to Δ2\Delta_{2}, which eliminates expected peak at Δ1+Δ2\Delta_{1}+\Delta_{2}. The nanometer length-scales our experiments imply indicate that an alternative explanation based on tunneling through back-to-back CDW-normal junctions is unlikely.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to physical review letter

    The B subunit of Escherichia coli heat-labile toxin alters the development and antigen-presenting capacity of dendritic cells

    Escherichia coli’s heat-labile enterotoxin (Etx) and its non-toxic B subunit (EtxB) have been characterized as adjuvants capable of enhancing T cell responses to co-administered antigen. Here, we investigate the direct effect of intravenously administered EtxB on the size of the dendritic and mye-loid cell populations in spleen. EtxB treatment appears to enhance the development and turnover of dendritic and myeloid cells from precursors within the spleen. EtxB treatment also gives a dendritic cell (DC) population with higher viability and lower activation status based on the reduced expression of MHC-II, CD80 and CD86. In this respect, the in vivo effect of EtxB differs from that of the highly inflammatory mediator lipopolysaccharide. In in vi-tro bone marrow cultures, EtxB treatment was also found to enhance the development of DC from precursors dependent on Flt3L. In terms of the in vivo effect of EtxB on CD4 and CD8 T cell responses in mice, the interaction of EtxB directly with DC was demonstrated following conditional deple-tion of CD11c+ DC. In summary, all results are consistent with EtxB displaying adjuvant ability by enhancing the turnover of DC in spleen, leading to newly mature myeloid and DC in spleen, thereby increasing DC capacity to perform as antigen-presenting cells on encounter with T cells

    Laboratory experimental methods are used to investigate the impacts of supply and/or demand risks on prices, quantities traded, and earnings within forward and spot market institutions. Random demand and/or supply shifts can be as much as 25 percent of the expected equilibrium outcome. Nevertheless, results suggest that the spot or forward trading institution itself has a greater influence on market outcomes than the presence of risk within the trading institutions. Sellers tend to have relatively higher earnings in a spot market than buyers, regardless of the risk.     © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd. Novel hybrid non-volatile memories made using an ultra-fast microwave heating method are reported for the first time. The devices, consisting of aligned ZnO nanorods embedded in poly (methyl methacrylate), require no forming step and exhibit reliable and reproducible bipolar resistive switching at low voltages and with low power usage. We attribute these properties to a combination of the high aspect ratio of the nanorods and the polymeric hybrid structure of the device. The extremely easy, fast and low-cost solution based method of fabrication makes possible the simple and quick production of cheap memory cells

    Signalment risk factors for cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (Alabama rot) in dogs in the UK

    Seasonal outbreaks of cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) have been reported annually in UK dogs since 2012, yet the aetiology of the disease remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to explore whether any breeds had an increased or decreased risk of being diagnosed with CRGV, and to report on age and sex distributions of CRGV cases occurring in the UK. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare 101 dogs diagnosed with CRGV between November 2012 and May 2017 with a denominator population of 446,453 dogs from the VetCompass database. Two Kennel Club breed groups—hounds (odds ratio (OR) 10.68) and gun dogs (OR 9.69)—had the highest risk of being diagnosed with CRGV compared with terriers, while toy dogs were absent from among CRGV cases. Females were more likely to be diagnosed with CRGV (OR 1.51) as were neutered dogs (OR 3.36). As well as helping veterinarians develop an index of suspicion for the disease, better understanding of the signalment risk factors may assist in the development of causal models for CRGV and help identify the aetiology of the disease
