Multiple Correlations and High Tranverse Momentum Jets in 147-GeV/c pi- p Interactions
We examine multiparticle correlations in a {pi}{sup -}p experiment at 147 GeV/c performed by the Proportional Hybrid System Consortium. The major aim of this paper is to demonstrate the existence of clusters in our data. We use different statistical algorithms to assemble into clusters the particles in each event which are associated by virtue of small relative angles. We find that these clusters are stable against different choices of metric and/or algorithm, and reproduce the effects previously observed in the data corresponding to clusters. Some of these clusters have properties similar to high p{sub T} jets. A detailed study of these jet-like clusters is described, and comparisons with some counter experiments are discussed

There's more than rugged individualism in coping. Part 2: Construct validity and further model testing
We examined the multiaxial model of coping using the dispositional or general version of the Strategic Approach to Coping Scale (SACS) and the situational version of the SACS, in Part 2 of this two-part series. We found both dispositional and situational measures to be reliable and that dispositional coping was a strong predictor of situational coping 12 weeks later. Dispositional coping was a better prospective predictor of emotional outcomes, and situational coping was a better predictor of current emotional outcomes. Women were found to be more prosocial and less antisocial in their coping than men, but no less active. Prosocial coping tended to be related to better emotional outcomes for both men and women. Aggressive coping was also an effective strategy as long as it did not move into the outright antisocial forms of coping. The multiaxial model of coping appears to balance individualistic and collectivist notions of coping in a way that successfully predicts coping outcomes under stressful conditions and that does not disfavor women as do many individualistically-oriented measures of coping that ignore copings' pro- and antisocial aspects
Evidence for a 4 pi decay of an isobar at 1300 MeV
The authors present evidence for a resonance of mass 1300 MeV that decays sequentially by X to A/sub 1/ pi to rho pi pi to pi /sup +/ pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ pi /sup -/ in the 6 pi annihilation channel of pp at 3.6 GeV/c. (0 refs)

Calcium dysregulation and Cdk5-ATM pathway involved in a mouse model of fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome.
Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) is a neurological disorder that affects premutation carriers with 55-200 CGG-expansion repeats (preCGG) in FMR1, presenting with early alterations in neuronal network formation and function that precede neurodegeneration. Whether intranuclear inclusions containing DNA damage response (DDR) proteins are causally linked to abnormal synaptic function, neuronal growth and survival are unknown. In a mouse that harbors a premutation CGG expansion (preCGG), cortical and hippocampal FMRP expression is moderately reduced from birth through adulthood, with greater FMRP reductions in the soma than in the neurite, despite several-fold elevation of Fmr1 mRNA levels. Resting cytoplasmic calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) in cultured preCGG hippocampal neurons is chronically elevated, 3-fold compared to Wt; elevated ROS and abnormal glutamatergic responses are detected at 14 DIV. Elevated µ-calpain activity and a higher p25/p35 ratio in the cortex of preCGG young adult mice indicate abnormal Cdk5 regulation. In support, the Cdk5 substrate, ATM, is upregulated by 1.5- to 2-fold at P0 and 6 months in preCGG brain, as is p-Ser1981-ATM. Bax:Bcl-2 is 30% higher in preCGG brain, indicating a greater vulnerability to apoptotic activation. Elevated [Ca2+]i, ROS, and DDR signals are normalized with dantrolene. Chronic [Ca2+]i dysregulation amplifies Cdk5-ATM signaling, possibly linking impaired glutamatergic signaling and DDR to neurodegeneration in preCGG brain
