A fast edge charge exchange recombination spectroscopy system at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak
In this work, a new type of high through-put Czerny-Turner spectrometer has been developed which
allows us to acquire multiple channels simultaneously with a repetition time on the order of 10
μ
s
at different wavelengths. The spectrometer has been coupled to the edge charge exchange recom-
bination system at ASDEX Upgrade which has been recently refurbished with new lines of sight.
Construction features, calibration methods, and initial measurements obtained with the new setup will

Decoherence in a superconducting flux qubit with a pi-junction
We consider the use of a pi-junction for flux qubits to realize degenerate
quantum levels without external magnetic field. On the basis of the
Caldeira-Leggett model, we derive an effective spin-Boson model, and study
decoherece of this type of qubits. We estimate the dephasing time by using
parameters from recent experiments of SIFS junctions, and show that high
critical current and large subgap resistance are required for the pi-junction
to realize a long coherent time.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Equilibrium orbit analysis in a free-electron laser with a coaxial wiggler
An analysis of single-electron orbits in combined coaxial wiggler and axial
guide magnetic fields is presented. Solutions of the equations of motion are
developed in a form convenient for computing orbital velocity components and
trajectories in the radially dependent wiggler. Simple analytical solutions are
obtained in the radially-uniform-wiggler approximation and a formula for the
derivative of the axial velocity with respect to Lorentz factor
is derived. Results of numerical computations are presented and the
characteristics of the equilibrium orbits are discussed. The third spatial
harmonic of the coaxial wiggler field gives rise to group orbits which

Experimental conditions to suppress edge localised modes by magnetic perturbations in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak
Access conditions for full suppression of Edge Localised Modes (ELMs) by
Magnetic Perturbations (MP) in low density high confinement mode (H-mode)
plasmas are studied in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The main empirical
requirements for full ELM suppression in our experiments are: 1. The poloidal
spectrum of the MP must be aligned for best plasma response from weakly stable
kink-modes, which amplify the perturbation, 2. The plasma edge density must be
below a critical value, ~m. The edge collisionality
is in the range (ions) and
(electrons). However, our data does not show that the edge collisionality is
the critical parameter that governs access to ELM suppression. 3. The pedestal
pressure must be kept sufficiently low to avoid destabilisation of small ELMs.
This requirement implies a systematic reduction of pedestal pressure of
typically 30\% compared to unmitigated ELMy H-mode in otherwise similar
plasmas. 4. The edge safety factor lies within a certain window.
Within the range probed so far, , one such window,
has been identified. Within the range of plasma rotation
encountered so far, no apparent threshold of plasma rotation for ELM
suppression is found. This includes cases with large cross field electron flow
in the entire pedestal region, for which two-fluid MHD models predict that the
resistive plasma response to the applied MP is shielded
Tension of APEL: Perceptions of higher education in further education lecturers
This article examines the perceptions of Accrediting Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) from the point of view of lecturers delivering higher education in further education institutions. Despite the fact that APEL is recognised as potentially providing a range of benefits for higher education providers, students and employers, little research has been carried out with those responsible for accreditation. Data were obtained using an online survey to collect information from lecturers about their awareness of and support for APEL. Analysis of this information reveals that confusion about the purpose and implementation remain the main barriers to APEL for this group, and that providing appropriate support for staff could be an effective mechanism for overcoming this. The implications of this study are discussed in relation to the higher education in further education context, with specific reference to the Foundation degree. © 2011 Further Education Research Association

(small-x) photon-proton processes in terms of a universal dipole cross section
and compare and contrast various parameterizations of this function that exist

Durability of Benefits From Supervised Treadmill Exercise in People With Peripheral Artery Disease.
Background It is currently unknown whether 6 months of supervised treadmill exercise has a durable benefit on 6-minute walk performance, even after exercise is completed, in people with peripheral artery disease. Methods and Results A total of 156 participants with peripheral artery disease were randomized to 1 of 3 groups: supervised treadmill exercise, supervised resistance training, or attention control. Participants received supervised sessions during months 1 to 6 and telephone contact during months 6 to 12. Primary outcomes were change in 6-minute walk distance and short physical performance battery at 6-month follow-up and have been reported previously. Secondary outcomes were change in 6-minute walk and short physical performance battery at 12-month follow-up and are reported here. A group of 134 participants (86%) completed the 12-month follow-up. At 6-month follow-up, compared with control, 6-minute walk distance improved in the treadmill exercise group (+36.1 m, 95% CI =13.9-58.3, P=0.001). Between 6- and 12-month follow-up, 6-minute walk distance significantly declined (-28.6 m, 95% CI=-52.6 to -4.5, P=0.020) and physical activity declined -272 activity units (95% CI =-546 to +2, P=0.052) in the treadmill exercise group compared with controls. At 12-month follow-up, 6 months after completing supervised treadmill exercise, change in 6-minute walk distance was not different between the treadmill exercise and control groups (+7.5, 95% CI =-17.5 to +32.6, P=0.56). There were no differences in short physical performance battery change between either exercise group and control at 6-month or 12-month follow-up. Conclusions A 6-month supervised treadmill exercise intervention that improved 6-minute walk distance at 6-month follow-up did not have persistent benefit at 12-month follow-up. These results do not support a durable benefit of supervised treadmill exercise in peripheral artery disease. Clinical Trial Registration URL : https://www.clinicaltrials.gov . Reinventing College Physics for Biologists: Explicating an epistemological curriculum
The University of Maryland Physics Education Research Group (UMd-PERG)
carried out a five-year research project to rethink, observe, and reform
introductory algebra-based (college) physics. This class is one of the Maryland
Physics Department's large service courses, serving primarily life-science
majors. After consultation with biologists, we re-focused the class on helping
the students learn to think scientifically -- to build coherence, think in
terms of mechanism, and to follow the implications of assumptions. We designed
the course to tap into students' productive conceptual and epistemological
resources, based on a theoretical framework from research on learning. The
reformed class retains its traditional structure in terms of time and
instructional personnel, but we modified existing best-practices curricular
materials, including Peer Instruction, Interactive Lecture Demonstrations, and
Tutorials. We provided class-controlled spaces for student collaboration, which
allowed us to observe and record students learning directly. We also scanned
all written homework and examinations, and we administered pre-post conceptual
and epistemological surveys. The reformed class enhanced the strong gains on
pre-post conceptual tests produced by the best-practices materials while
obtaining unprecedented pre-post gains on epistemological surveys instead of
