    Security, Privacy, and Technology Development: The Impact on National Security

    The evolution of modern communications and information technology sparked a revolution of unprecedented proportions, bringing about an explosion in terms of users and capabilities, as well as increasing demands for both security and privacy. To meet these security demands, new technologies are evolving that can in fact provide a secure and protected environment. At the same time, however, the technology-development path is being increasingly impacted by two other major dynamics: the legal environment and user expectations with respect to privacy. Within the past four years in particular, several major court decisions as well as the official release of documents and illicit “leaks” have drawn enormous attention to what privacy protections must be afforded to various types of data and communications. Users, increasingly aware of intrusions into their data and communications—ranging from intelligence services to hackers and criminals—are demanding greater levels of protection. While technological approaches to greater privacy are possible, they are not costfree— particularly in terms of the computational overhead and other constraints imposed on new systems

    Most literature on the Civil War focuses on soldiers, battles, and politics. But for every soldier in the United States Army, there were nine civilians at home. The war affected those left on the home front in many ways. Westward expansion and land ownership increased. The draft disrupted families while a shortage of male workers created opportunities for women that were previously unknown. The war also enlarged the national government in ways unimagined before 1861. The Homestead Act, the Land Grant College Act, civil rights legislation, the use of paper currency, and creation of the Internal Revenue Service to collect taxes to pay for the war all illustrate how the war fundamentally, and permanently, changed the nation.     On the resistivity at low temperatures in electron-doped cuprate superconductors

    We measured the magnetoresistance as a function of temperature down to 20mK and magnetic field for a set of underdoped PrCeCuO (x=0.12) thin films with controlled oxygen content. This allows us to access the edge of the superconducting dome on the underdoped side. The sheet resistance increases with increasing oxygen content whereas the superconducting transition temperature is steadily decreasing down to zero. Upon applying various magnetic fields to suppress superconductivity we found that the sheet resistance increases when the temperature is lowered. It saturates at very low temperatures. These results, along with the magnetoresistance, cannot be described in the context of zero temperature two dimensional superconductor-to-insulator transition nor as a simple Kondo effect due to scattering off spins in the copper-oxide planes. We conjecture that due to the proximity to an antiferromagnetic phase magnetic droplets are induced. This results in negative magnetoresistance and in an upturn in the resistivity.Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev.

    γδ T cells affect IL-4 production and B-cell tolerance

    γδ T cells can influence specific antibody responses. Here, we report that mice deficient in individual γδ T-cell subsets have altered levels of serum antibodies, including all major subclasses, sometimes regardless of the presence of αβ T cells. One strain with a partial γδ deficiency that increases IgE antibodies also displayed increases in IL-4–producing T cells (both residual γδ T cells and αβ T cells) and in systemic IL-4 levels. Its B cells expressed IL-4–regulated inhibitory receptors (CD5, CD22, and CD32) at diminished levels, whereas IL-4–inducible IL-4 receptor α and MHCII were increased. They also showed signs of activation and spontaneously formed germinal centers. These mice displayed IgE-dependent features found in hyper-IgE syndrome and developed antichromatin, antinuclear, and anticytoplasmic autoantibodies. In contrast, mice deficient in all γδ T cells had nearly unchanged Ig levels and did not develop autoantibodies. Removing IL-4 abrogated the increases in IgE, antichromatin antibodies, and autoantibodies in the partially γδ-deficient mice. Our data suggest that γδ T cells, controlled by their own cross-talk, affect IL-4 production, B-cell activation, and B-cell tolerance

    Leaching of Potential Hazardous Elements of Coal Cleaning Rejects

    The geochemical characteristics of coal cleaning rejects (CCR) in Santa Catarina State, Brazil, were investigated. Around 3.5 million ton/ year of coal waste are dumped in Santa Catarina State. Coal beneficiation by froth flotation results in large amounts of CCR composed of coaly and mineral matter, the latter characterized by the occurrence of sulphide minerals and a broad array of leachable elements. The total and leachable contents of more than 60 elements were analyzed. Atmospheric exposure promotes sulphide oxidation that releases substantial sulphate loads as well as Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Cl- and Al3+. The metals with the most severe discharges were Zn, Cu, Mn, Co, Ni and Cd. Most trace pollutants in the CCR displayed a marked pH-dependent solubility, being immobile in near-neutral samples. The results highlight the complex interactions among mineral matter solubility, pH and the leaching of potentially hazardous elements. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V
