    Design and fabrication of Rene 41 advanced structural panels

    Get PDF
    The efficiency was investigated of curved elements in the design of lightweight structural panels under combined loads of axial compression, inplane shear, and bending. The application is described of technology generated in the initial aluminum program to the design and fabrication of Rene 41 panels for subsequent performance tests at elevated temperature. Optimum designs for two panel configurations are presented. The designs are applicable to hypersonic airplane wing structure, and are designed specifically for testing at elevated temperature in the hypersonic wing test structure located at the NASA Flight Research Center. Fabrication methods developed to produce the Rene panels are described, and test results of smaller structural element specimens are presented to verify the design and fabrication methods used. Predicted strengths of the panels under several proposed elevated temperature test load conditions are presented

    High-field Hall resistivity and magnetoresistance in electron-doped Pr_2-xCe_xCuO_{4-\delta}

    We report resistivity and Hall effect measurements in electron-doped Pr2x_{2-x}Cex_{x}CuO4δ_{4-\delta} films in magnetic field up to 58 T. In contrast to hole-doped cuprates, we find a surprising non-linear magnetic field dependence of Hall resistivity at high field in the optimally doped and overdoped films. We also observe a crossover from quadratic to linear field dependence of the positive magnetoresistance in the overdoped films. A spin density wave induced Fermi surface reconstruction model can be used to qualitatively explain both the Hall effect and magnetoresistance.Comment: PRL in pres

    Ultrafast dynamics in the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations in electron-doped cuprate La2x_{2-x}Cex_xCuO4±δ_{4\pm\delta}

    We used femtosecond optical pump-probe spectroscopy to study the photoinduced change in reflectivity of thin films of the electron-doped cuprate La2x_{2-x}Cex_xCuO4_4 (LCCO) with dopings of x==0.08 (underdoped) and x==0.11 (optimally doped). Above Tc_c, we observe fluence-dependent relaxation rates which onset at a similar temperature that transport measurements first see signatures of antiferromagnetic correlations. Upon suppressing superconductivity with a magnetic field, it is found that the fluence and temperature dependence of relaxation rates is consistent with bimolecular recombination of electrons and holes across a gap (2ΔAF\Delta_{AF}) originating from antiferromagnetic correlations which comprise the pseudogap in electron-doped cuprates. This can be used to learn about coupling between electrons and high-energy (ω>2ΔAF\omega>2\Delta_{AF}) excitations in these compounds and set limits on the timescales on which antiferromagnetic correlations are static

    Spectroscopy of Brown Dwarf Candidates in the rho Ophiuchi Molecular Core

    Full text link
    We present an analysis of low resolution infrared spectra for 20 brown dwarf candidates in the core of the ρ\rho Ophiuchi molecular cloud. Fifteen of the sources display absorption-line spectra characteristic of late-type stars. By comparing the depths of water vapor absorption bands in our candidate objects with a grid of M dwarf standards, we derive spectral types which are independent of reddening. Optical spectroscopy of one brown dwarf candidate confirms the spectral type derived from the water bands. Combining their spectral types with published near-infrared photometry, effective temperatures and bolometric stellar luminosities are derived enabling us to place our sample on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We compare the positions of the brown dwarf candidates in this diagram with two sets of theoretical models in order to estimate their masses and ages. Considering uncertainties in placing the candidates in the H-R diagram, six objects consistently lie in the brown dwarf regime and another five objects lie in the transition region between stellar and substellar objects. The ages inferred for the sample are consistent with those derived for higher mass association members. Three of the newly identified brown dwarfs display infrared excesses at λ\lambda=2.2 μ\mum suggesting that young brown dwarfs can have active accretion disks. Comparing our mass estimates of the brown dwarf candidates with those derived from photometric data alone suggests that spectroscopy is an essential component of investigations of the mass functions of young clusters.Comment: Astronomical Journal, in press: 25 pages, latex, 5 tables and 6 figures (separate

    On the Theory of Fermionic Preheating

    In inflationary cosmology, the particles constituting the Universe are created after inflation due to their interaction with moving inflaton field(s) in the process of preheating. In the fermionic sector, the leading channel is out-of equilibrium particle production in the non-perturbative regime of parametric excitation, which respects Pauli blocking but differs significantly from the perturbative expectation. We develop theory of fermionic preheating coupling to the inflaton, without and with expansion of the universe, for light and massive fermions, to calculate analytically the occupation number of created fermions, focusing on their spectra and time evolution. In the case of large resonant parameter qq we extend for rermions the method of successive parabolic scattering, earlier developed for bosonic preheating. In an expanding universe parametric excitation of fermions is stochastic. Created fermions very quickly, within tens of inflaton oscillations, fill up a sphere of radius q1/4\simeq q^{1/4} in monetum space. We extend our formalism to the production of superheavy fermions and to `instant' fermion creation.Comment: 14 pages, latex, 12 figures, submitted for publicatio
