Radiocarbon dates from the Oxford AMS system: archaeometry datelist 35
This is the 35th list of AMS radiocarbon determinations measured at the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (ORAU). Amongst some of the sites included here are the latest series of determinations from the key sites of Abydos, El Mirón, Ban Chiang, Grotte de Pigeons (Taforalt), Alepotrypa and Oberkassel, as well as others dating to the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and later periods. Comments on the significance of the results are provided by the submitters of the material
Position Resolution in LaBr3 and LaCl3 Scintillators Using Position-Sensitive Photomultiplier Tubes
Advanced scintillator materials such as LaBr3:Ce and LaCl3:Ce hold great promise for future hard X-ray and gamma-ray astrophysics missions due to their high density, high light output, good linearity, and fast decay times. Of particular importance for future space-based imaging instruments, such as coded-aperture telescopes, is the precise spatial location of individual gamma-ray interactions. We have investigated the position and energy resolution achievable within monolithic (5 cm × 5 cm × 1 cm) LaBr3:Ce and LaCl3:Ce crystals using position-sensitive light readout devices, including a position-sensitive photomultiplier tube and a multi-anode photomultiplier tube. We present the results of these tests and discuss the applicability of such advanced scintillators to future high-energy imaging astrophysics missions
Reconstruction of Black Hole Metric Perturbations from Weyl Curvature II: The Regge-Wheeler gauge
Perturbation theory of rotating black holes is described in terms of the Weyl
scalars and ; each satisfying the Teukolsky's complex master
wave equation with spin , and respectively representing outgoing and
ingoing radiation. We explicitly construct the metric perturbations out of
these Weyl scalars in the Regge-Wheeler gauge in the nonrotating limit. We
propose a generalization of the Regge-Wheeler gauge for Kerr background in the
Newman-Penrose language, and discuss the approach for building up the perturbed
spacetime of a rotating black hole. We also provide both-way relationships
between waveforms defined in the metric and curvature approaches in the time
domain, also known as the (inverse-) Chandrasekhar transformations, generalized
to include matter.Comment: 22 pages, no figure
Tone-activated, remote, alert communication system
Pocket sized transmitter, frequency modulated by crystal derived tones, with integral loop antenna provides police with easy operating alert signal communicator which uses patrol car radio to relay signal. Communication channels are time shared by several patrol units
Changes in Biomedical and Physical Correlates in Behavioral Weight Loss with Retarded Youths
Seventeen trainable mentally retarded youths were assigned to either a behavior therapy (N = 6), an obese wait·list control group (N = 5) or a normal weight control group (N = 6). The behavior therapy subjects lost significantly more weight than the two control groups who gained weight. The behavior therapy subjects achieved significant reductions in tricep skin· fold thickness, abdominal circumferences, and diastolic blood pressure measures by the end of the 21·week treatment program. The advantages of using multiple dependent measures is discussed
Energetic-ion acceleration and transport in the upstream region of Jupiter: Voyager 1 and 2
Long-lived upstream energetic ion events at Jupiter appear to be very similar in nearly all respects to upstream ion events at Earth. A notable difference between the two planetary systems is the enhanced heavy ion compositional signature reported for the Jovian events. This compositional feature has suggested that ions escaping from the Jovian magnetosphere play an important role in forming upstream ion populations at Jupiter. In contrast, models of energetic upstream ions at Earth emphasize in situ acceleration of reflected solar wind ions within the upstream region itself. Using Voyager 1 and 2 energetic ( approximately 30 keV) ion measurements near the magnetopause, in the magnetosheath, and immediately upstream of the bow shock, the compositional patterns are examined together with typical energy spectra in each of these regions. A model involving upstream Fermi acceleration early in events and emphasizing energetic particle escape in the prenoon part of the Jovian magnetosphere late in events is presented to explain many of the features in the upstream region of Jupiter
Experiments with a Slow Neutron Velocity Spectrometer
Neutron bursts were produced by modulation of the arc source of a small cyclotron. Neutrons subsequently slowed down in paraffin were detected by a BF_3 ionization chamber and linear amplifier. Modulation of an additional amplifier allowed the counting of all detected neutrons as well as those arriving in a specified time interval. Time of flight experiments were carried out at 3.0 meters with "on" times of 50 or 100 μsec. (microseconds) out of a period of 2500 μsec. The modulation of the source and detector was accurate to about 5 μsec. The absorption of thin Cd (0.052 g/cm^2) shows a resolved resonance absorption with maximum at 0.14 ev. The thick Cd (0.45 g/cm^2) absorption was also examined and it was found that the absorption edge was not sharp, the transmission being 0.5 at 0.47 ev. Experiments with thick absorbers of Rh and In showed definite evidence of resonance absorption at 1.0 ev for both elements. Experiments were also carried out to study the delayed emission of thermal neutrons from the paraffin surrounding the source. An effective mean life of 170 μsec. was found. The effect of the resolution of the apparatus was examined and found to be small except for the resonances at 1.0 ev. The effect of the delayed emission of thermal neutrons on the time of flight measurements was also examined. From the thin Cd absorption curve T, the total width of the resonance level, was found to be 0.12 ev and from the cross section at resonance [1±(1/2i+1)]Γn, where Γn is the neutron width and i is the angular momentum of the absorbing nucleus, it was found to be 5×10^(−4) ev. In this calculation 13 percent abundance of the effective isotope was assumed
