Ferroelectricity from spin supercurrents in LiCuVO4
We have studied the magnetic structure of the ferroelectric frustrated
spin-1/2 chain material LiCuVO4 in applied electric and magnetic fields using
polarized neutrons. A symmetry and mean-field analysis of the data rules out
the presence of static Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, while exchange
striction is shown to be negligible by our specific-heat measurements. The
experimentally observed magnetoelectric coupling is in excellent agreement with
the predictions of a purely electronic mechanism based on spin supercurrents.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, final versio
The food safety impact of salt and sodium reduction initiatives
Excessive or high salt or sodium intake is known to cause hypertension and other diseases. Within the United Kingdom voluntary targets for salt reduction have been set and laid out in the Secretary of State responsibility deal. This review considers the options available to food manufacturers to enable them to reduce salt and the potential food safety risks associated with those options. Gaps in research and knowledge within the areas of information supplied to food manufacturers, alternative solutions for salt replacement and the food safety impact of salt reduction are discussed
Evidence of a bond-nematic phase in LiCuVO4
Polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering experiments on the frustrated
ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain LiCuVO4 show that the phase transition at HQ of 8
Tesla is driven by quadrupolar fluctuations and that dipolar correlations are
short-range with moments parallel to the applied magnetic field in the
high-field phase. Heat-capacity measurements evidence a phase transition into
this high-field phase, with an anomaly clearly different from that at low
magnetic fields. Our experimental data are consistent with a picture where the
ground state above HQ has a next-nearest neighbour bond-nematic order along the
chains with a fluid-like coherence between weakly coupled chains.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Field-induced commensurate long-range order in the Haldane-gap system NDMAZ
High-field neutron diffraction studies of the new quantum-disordered S=1
linear-chain antiferromagnet Ni(CHN)N(ClO) (NDMAZ)
are reported. At T=70 mK, at a critical field T applied along the
(013) direction, a phase transition to a commensurate N\'{e}el-like ordered
state is observed. The results are discussed in the context of existing
theories of quantum phase transitions in Haldane-gap antiferromagnets, and in
comparions with previous studies of the related system

Anisotropic Neutron Spin Resonance in Superconducting BaFeNiAs
We use polarized inelastic neutron scattering to show that the neutron spin
resonance below in superconducting BaFeNiAs (
K) is purely magnetic in origin. Our analysis further reveals that the
resonance peak near 7~meV only occurs for the planar response. This challenges
the common perception that the spin resonance in the pnictides is an isotropic
triplet excited state of the singlet Cooper pairs, as our results imply that
only the components of the triplet are involved
Magnetic excitations in coupled Haldane spin chains near the quantum critical point
Two quasi-1-dimensional S=1 quantum antiferromagnetic materials, PbNi2V2O8
and SrNi2V2O8, are studied by inelastic neutron scattering on powder samples.
While magnetic interactions in the two systems are found to be very similar,
subtle differences in inter-chain interaction strengths and magnetic anisotropy
are detected. The latter are shown to be responsible for qualitatively
different ground state properties: magnetic long-range order in SrNi2V2O8 and
disordered ``spin liquid'' Haldane-gap state in PbNi2V2O8.Comment: 15 figures, Figs. 5,9, and 10 in color. Some figures in JPEG format.

Spin correlations and exchange in square lattice frustrated ferromagnets
The J1-J2 model on a square lattice exhibits a rich variety of different
forms of magnetic order that depend sensitively on the ratio of exchange
constants J2/J1. We use bulk magnetometry and polarized neutron scattering to
determine J1 and J2 unambiguously for two materials in a new family of vanadium
phosphates, Pb2VO(PO4)2 and SrZnVO(PO4)2, and we find that they have
ferromagnetic J1. The ordered moment in the collinear antiferromagnetic ground
state is reduced, and the diffuse magnetic scattering is enhanced, as the
predicted bond-nematic region of the phase diagram is approached.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The strength of frustration and quantum fluctuations in LiVCuO4
For the 1D-frustrated ferromagnetic J_1-J_2 model with interchain coupling
added, we analyze the dynamical and static structure factor S(k,omega), the
pitch angle phi of the magnetic structure, the magnetization curve of
edge-shared chain cuprates, and focus on LiCuVO4 for which neither a perturbed
spinon nor a spin wave approach can be applied. phi is found to be most
sensitive to the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations. For LiVCuO4
the obtained exchange parameters J are in accord with the results for a
realistic 5-band extended Hubbard model and LSDA + U predictions yielding
alpha=J_2/|J_1| about 0.75 in contrast to 5.5 > alpha > 1.42 suggested in the
literature. The alpha-regime of the empirical phi-values in NaCu2O2 and
linarite are considered, too.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, (1 figure added), improved text including also
