Nonlinear stabilitty for steady vortex pairs
In this article, we prove nonlinear orbital stability for steadily
translating vortex pairs, a family of nonlinear waves that are exact solutions
of the incompressible, two-dimensional Euler equations. We use an adaptation of
Kelvin's variational principle, maximizing kinetic energy penalised by a
multiple of momentum among mirror-symmetric isovortical rearrangements. This
formulation has the advantage that the functional to be maximized and the
constraint set are both invariant under the flow of the time-dependent Euler
equations, and this observation is used strongly in the analysis. Previous work
on existence yields a wide class of examples to which our result applies.Comment: 25 page
The Origin of Tunneling Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Break Junctions
First-principles calculations of electron tunneling transport in Ni and Co
break junctions reveal strong dependence of the conductance on the
magnetization direction, an effect known as tunneling anisotropic
magnetoresistance (TAMR). The origin of this phenomenon stems from resonant
states localized in the electrodes near the junction break. The energy and
broadening of these states is strongly affected by the magnetization
orientation due to spin-orbit coupling, causing TAMR to be sensitive to bias
voltage on a scale of a few mV. Our results bear a resemblance to recent
experimental data and suggest that TAMR driven by resonant states is a general
phenomenon typical for magnetic broken contacts and other experimental
geometries where a magnetic tip is used to probe electron transport.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
High-Precision Entropy Values for Spanning Trees in Lattices
Shrock and Wu have given numerical values for the exponential growth rate of
the number of spanning trees in Euclidean lattices. We give a new technique for
numerical evaluation that gives much more precise values, together with
rigorous bounds on the accuracy. In particular, the new values resolve one of

Discovery of a Nearby Low-Surface-Brightness Spiral Galaxy
During the course of a search for compact, isolated gas clouds moving with
anomalous velocities in or near our own Galaxy (Braun and Burton 1998 A&A, in
press), we have discovered, in the data of the Leiden/Dwingeloo survey
(Hartmann and Burton 1997, Atlas of Galactic Neutral Hydrogen, CUP) of Galactic
hydrogen, the HI signature of a large galaxy, moving at a recession velocity of
282 km/s, with respect to our Galaxy. Deep multicolor and spectroscopic optical
observations show the presence of star formation in scattered HII regions;
radio HI synthesis interferometry confirms that the galaxy is rich in HI and
has the rotation signature of a spiral galaxy; a submillimeter observation
failed to detect the CO molecule. The radio and optical evidence combined
suggest its classification as a low-surface-brightness spiral galaxy. It is
located in close spatial and kinematic proximity to the galaxy NGC 6946. The
newly-discovered galaxy, which we call Cepheus 1, is at a distance of about 6

XMM-Newton observations of the supernova remnant IC443: I. soft X-ray emission from shocked interstellar medium
The shocked interstellar medium around IC443 produces strong X-ray emission
in the soft energy band (E<1.5 keV). We present an analysis of such emission as
observed with the EPIC MOS cameras on board the XMM-Newotn observatory, with
the purpose to find clear signatures of the interactions with the interstellar
medium (ISM) in the X-ray band, which may complement results obtained in other
wavelenghts. We found that the giant molecular cloud mapped in CO emission is
located in the foreground and gives an evident signature in the absorption of
X-rays. This cloud may have a torus shape and the part of torus interacting
with the IC443 shock gives rise to 2MASS-K emission in the southeast. The
measured density of emitting X-ray shocked plasma increases toward the
northeastern limb, where the remnant is interacting with an atomic cloud. We
found an excellent correlation between emission in the 0.3-0.5 keV band and
bright optical/radio filament on large spatial scales. The partial shell
structure seen in this band therefore traces the encounter with the atomic
