Aims: The study aimed to identify variables associated with General Practitioners’ (GPs’) self-reported rate of health behaviour change counselling and confidence in counselling abilities. Methodology: This study was a repeat of a similar study carried out at the Mayo Clinic in 2007. The same tool and methodology were used with the permission of the authors. Variables measured by the questionnaire included: participants’ characteristics, physical activity, smoking status, healthy eating behaviour, self-reported rate of counselling behaviour, extent of training in counselling, perceived importance of counselling, confidence for health behaviour change counselling. A comparative analysis of the results was made.peer-reviewe

Pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in threatened miscarriages

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate circulating and intracellular levels of Th1 and Th2 cytokines in women with threatenedmiscarriage (TM) and subsequent outcome. STUDY DESIGN: Plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-receptors 1 and 2, TNF , interferon gamma (IFN ), and interleukins (IL) -6 and -10 were measured by flow cytometric bead assays in 80 women with TM: 53 women with normal outcome and 27 women who miscarried. Fluorescent antibody labeling was also performed on whole blood in a subgroup of 27 women of TM: 16 women with normal outcome and 11 women who miscarried. RESULTS: Monocyte expression of TNF and circulating levels of TNF , IFN , IL-10, IL-6, and TNF-R1 were significantly lower, whereas circulating levels of TNF /IL-10, IFN /IL-10, and TNF /IL-6 ratios were significantly higher, in women with TM who subsequently miscarried, compared with the women with normal outcome. CONCLUSION: An increased Th1 type of immune response, which was similar to that observed in preterm delivery, was found in TM cases that were complicated by a subsequent miscarriage.peer-reviewe

Composition and luminescence of AlInGaN layers grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy

A study of AlInGaN epilayers, grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy, was performed using spatially resolved x-ray microanalysis and luminescence spectroscopy in order to investigate competition between the incorporation of In, Al, and Ga as a function of the growth temperature in the 565-660 °C range and the nominal AlN mole fraction. The samples studied have AlN and InN mole fractions in the ranges of 4%-30% and 0%-16%, respectively. Composition measurements show the effect of decreasing temperature to be an increase in the incorporation of InN, accompanied by a small but discernible decrease in the ratio of GaN to AlN mole fractions. The incorporation of In is also shown to be significantly increased by decreasing the Al mole fraction. Optical emission peaks, observed by cathodoluminescence mapping and by photoluminescence, provide further information on the epilayer compositions as a function of substrate temperature, and the dependencies of peak energy and linewidth are plotted

    Problematizing cultural appropriation

    Get PDF
Cultural appropriation in games entails the taking of knowledge, artifacts or expression from a culture and recontextualizing it within game structures. While cultural appropriation is a pervasive practice in games, little attention has been given to the ethical issues that emerge from such practices with regards to how culture is portrayed. This paper problematizes cultural appropriation in the context of a serious game for children inspired by Día de los Muertos, a Mexican festival focused on remembrance of the dead. Taking a research through design approach, we demonstrate that recontextualised cultural elements can retain their basic, original meaning. However, we also find that cultural appropriation is inevitable and its ethical implications can be far reaching. In our context, ethical concerns arose as a result of children’s beliefs that death affects prominent others and their destructive ways of coping with death. We argue that revealing emergent ethical concerns is imperative before deciding how and in what way to encourage culturally authentic narratives

Optimal gestational age for delivery in uncomplicated dichorionic twin pregnancies : a population-based study

    Get PDF
Objectives: To identify the optimal gestational age for delivery in uncomplicated dichorionic twin pregnancies. Study Design: A retrospective analysis of gestational age-specific neonatal morbidity and mortality data was performed for 254 uncomplicated dichorionic twin pregnancies. Outcome measures included 1st and 5th minute Apgar scores, NICU admission, RDS, TTN, sepsis, seizure, hyperbilirubinemia, hypoglycaemia, neonatal length of hospital stay, birthweight and overall outcome. After correcting for confounding variables by regression analysis, adverse variable trends were assessed in each of the gestational-age- at-birth groups. Results: A significant drop in the incidence of LBW, RDS, TTN and hypoglycaemia, accompanied with the lowest NICU admission rate and neonatal length of hospital stay occurred concordantly at 38 completed weeks of gestation. The incidence of severe hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy decreased significantly by 36 weeks. No correlation was found between advancing gestation and foetal, perinatal or neonatal mortality. Conclusion: Elective delivery in uncomplicated dichorionic twin pregnancies should be delayed until at least 38 completed weeks of gestation as this significantly reduces neonatal morbidity with no impact on mortality.peer-reviewe

Kidnapped laser-scanner for evaluation of RFEC tool

© 2015 IEEE. An algorithm is proposed for matching data from different sensing modalities. The problem is formalised as a kidnapped robot problem, where Bayesian fusion is used to find the most likely location where both modalities agree. The key idea of our algorithm is to model the correlation between the two modalities as a likelihood used to update a location prior. Data, in this case, is represented as 2.5D thickness maps from a laser scanner and a Remote Field Eddy Current (RFEC) tool, used in non-destructive testing to assess the condition of infrastructures. The laser data is limited, while RFEC data is continuous. Given some prior in location, the aim is to find the 2.5D thickness map from the laser that corresponds to the RFEC data, which should be noted is highly noisy. Real data from CCTV inspections of water pipes are used to validate the proposed approach
