Polarization squeezing of light by single passage through an atomic vapor
We have studied relative-intensity fluctuations for a variable set of
orthogonal elliptic polarization components of a linearly polarized laser beam
traversing a resonant Rb vapor cell. Significant polarization squeezing
at the threshold level (-3dB) required for the implementation of several
continuous variables quantum protocols was observed. The extreme simplicity of
the setup, based on standard polarization components, makes it particularly
convenient for quantum information applications.Comment: Revised version. Minor changes. four pages, three figure
Environmental Regeneration Integrating Soft Mobility and Green Street Networks: A Case Study in the Metropolitan Periphery of Naples
Public space and street networks form a significant and central determinant of urban quality. The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has focused their crucial importance in the reorganisation of places that are “safe” because they allow movement through cities with minimal risk of contagion. While addressing the need for social distancing, open-air exercise, and mobility without the use of public transport, these measures resulted in other environmental and social benefits. Living with the coronavirus pandemic has produced a series of adaptative actions, such as barring or limiting automobile traffic, thereby expanding street space for pedestrians and bicyclists, whose impact is, as yet, difficult to fathom because of their contingent, temporary nature. In this context, this case study proposes a sustainable bicycle network to inform the future, permanent street redesign. Based on topographic, morphologic, and climatic data, it evaluates a series of contiguous road sections, defining redesign capacities and critical conditions to implement sustainable interventions to manage urban runoff, mitigate of extreme heat events, expand pedestrian paths and provide a bicycle network. This holistic approach to sustainable urban design evaluation, supported by reproducible
data and parameters, serves as a replicable model for the sustainable redesign of roads in other urban settings. The extent, integration, and complexity of the study engaged an interdisciplinary framework, facilitating detailed planning and design and quantified assessments of the environmental outcomes
diagnóstica no prognóstico final.
A avaliação efectuada
Correlation between magnetic interactions and domain structure in A1 FePt ferromagnetic thin films
We have investigated the relationship between the domain structure and the
magnetic interactions in a series of FePt ferromagnetic thin films of varying
thickness. As-made films grow in the magnetically soft and chemically
disordered A1 phase that may have two distinct domain structures. Above a
critical thickness nm the presence of an out of plane
anisotropy induces the formation of stripes, while for planar
domains occur.
Magnetic interactions have been characterized using the well known DCD-IRM
remanence protocols, plots, and magnetic viscosity measurements. We
have observed a strong correlation between the domain configuration and the
sign of the magnetic interactions. Planar domains are associated with positive
exchange-like interactions, while stripe domains have a strong negative
dipolar-like contribution. In this last case we have found a close correlation
between the interaction parameter and the surface dipolar energy of the stripe
domain structure. Using time dependent magnetic viscosity measurements, we have
also estimated an average activation volume for magnetic reversal, nm which is approximately
independent of the film thickness or the stripe period.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure
Decoherence by electromagnetic fluctuations in double-quantum-dot charge qubits
We discuss decoherence due to electromagnetic fluctuations in charge qubits
formed by two lateral quantum dots. We use an effective circuit model to
evaluate correlations of voltage fluctuations in the qubit setup. These
correlations allows us to estimate energy (T1) and phase (T2) relaxation times
of the the qubit system. Our theoretical estimate of the quality factor due to
dephasing by electromagnetic fluctuations yields values much higher than those
found in recent experiments, indicating that other sources of decoherence play
a dominant role.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
A novel monolithic silicon sensor for measuring acceleration, pressure and temperature on a shock absorber
AbstractA fabricated micro-mechanical sensor to assess the condition of automotive shock absorbers is presented. The monolithic sensor, measures the oil temperature, acceleration and internal pressure of the shock absorber. A dual mass accelerometer with optimized beam geometry is used for acceleration readout. In addition, a 23.1 μm thickness square membrane and two buried resistors are used for pressure and temperature sensing respectively. The proposed miniaturized sensor can be effectively integrated with standard single- and dual-tube shock absorbers. The data acquired during normal vehicle operation can be continuously used to monitor the condition of the shock absorbers, allowing shock absorbers to be replaced before their degradation significantly reduce the comfort, performance and safety of the vehicle
