    The development of the professional values and practice standard in the secondary graduate initial teacher training route in England

    The paper reports on a pilot research project to investigate how trainee teachers develop an understanding of the competences that must be reached in the area of professional practice and values , which is one of the standards that needs to be met before the award of Qualified Teacher Status in England. Data were collected from secondary trainee teachers, their placement mentors in schools and university tutors. Data have been interpreted in the context of potential threats to the professionalism of teachers, through the introduction of managerialist influences in public funded education. The main findings are: that trainees think that the most dominant influence on developing understanding of professional values are their school placements ; there were little differences in the responses from four subject areas studied ; mentors and other lead teachers play an important role in the development of understanding of professional values; the grades awarded by mentors when assessing professional practice and values varies between the four subjects studied. The explanation for these findings is complex and is related to the understanding and interpretation of the standard by both mentors and trainee teachers. The findings highlight some of the difficulties in attempting to assess competency standards in an area that is underpinned by values and suggest that initial teacher training can best assist the development of the standard when it is approached in a critical way by all parties.</p

    Operational uses of remote sensing for improving management decisions and actions concerning resource uses are considered in terms of first generation, or direct-action; and second generation or indirect, delayed-action applications. From among applications completed during 1974-75, seven case studies are offered in illustration of the many contrasts which can be drawn between first and second generation application studies. These include: (1) multi-agency river basin planning; (2) corridor assessment and route location for highway location together with improvement of county-level planning decisions; (3) improving timber management practices; (4) enforcement of new state statutes; (5) county-wide open space preservation; (6) land value reappraisal relative to property tax equalization; and (7) optimizing agri-business processing plant locations

    The Local Group: The Ultimate Deep Field

    Near-field cosmology -- using detailed observations of the Local Group and its environs to study wide-ranging questions in galaxy formation and dark matter physics -- has become a mature and rich field over the past decade. There are lingering concerns, however, that the relatively small size of the present-day Local Group (∼2\sim 2 Mpc diameter) imposes insurmountable sample-variance uncertainties, limiting its broader utility. We consider the region spanned by the Local Group's progenitors at earlier times and show that it reaches 3′≈73' \approx 7 co-moving Mpc in linear size (a volume of ≈350 Mpc3\approx 350\,{\rm Mpc}^3) at z=7z=7. This size at early cosmic epochs is large enough to be representative in terms of the matter density and counts of dark matter halos with Mvir(z=7)≲2×109 M⊙M_{\rm vir}(z=7) \lesssim 2\times 10^{9}\,M_{\odot}. The Local Group's stellar fossil record traces the cosmic evolution of galaxies with 103≲M⋆(z=0)/M⊙≲10910^{3} \lesssim M_{\star}(z=0) / M_{\odot} \lesssim 10^{9} (reaching M1500>−9M_{1500} > -9 at z∼7z\sim7) over a region that is comparable to or larger than the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (HUDF) for the entire history of the Universe. It is highly complementary to the HUDF, as it probes much fainter galaxies but does not contain the intrinsically rarer, brighter sources that are detectable in the HUDF. Archaeological studies in the Local Group also provide the ability to trace the evolution of individual galaxies across time as opposed to evaluating statistical connections between temporally distinct populations.     Can a Week Make a Difference? Changing Perceptions about Teaching and Living in Rural Alaska

    Many Alaskan schools are located in extremely remote or \u27fly-in\u27 places. These geographical extremes affect the recruitment and retention of teachers to remote rural schools. Through a partnership between the Southwest Region School District of Alaska and the Department of Education at Alaska Pacific University (APU), 14 pre-service teachers participated in a one-week remote rural practice teaching experience. These APU students lived and taught in village schools where indigenous Alaska Natives were the majority and whose language is Yup’ik.     Direct Detection of Dark Matter Debris Flows

    Tidal stripping of dark matter from subhalos falling into the Milky Way produces narrow, cold tidal streams as well as more spatially extended "debris flows" in the form of shells, sheets, and plumes. Here we focus on the debris flow in the Via Lactea II simulation, and show that this incompletely phase-mixed material exhibits distinctive high velocity behavior. Unlike tidal streams, which may not necessarily intersect the Earth's location, debris flow is spatially uniform at 8 kpc and thus guaranteed to be present in the dark matter flux incident on direct detection experiments. At Earth-frame speeds greater than 450 km/s, debris flow comprises more than half of the dark matter at the Sun's location, and up to 80% at even higher speeds. Therefore, debris flow is most important for experiments that are particularly sensitive to the high speed tail of the dark matter distribution, such as searches for light or inelastic dark matter or experiments with directional sensitivity.
