Conceptual servo technique for controlling tape drivers
Electronic speed control design maintains magnetic tape in close synchronism at the airborne and ground stationed devices. Use of the servo system during the record and reproduce modes results in the minimum amount of frequency distortion and flutter
Usefulness of ERTS-1 satellite imagery as a data-gathering tool by resource managers in the Bureau of Land Management
ERTS-1 satellite imagery can be an effective data-gathering tool for resource managers. Techniques are developed which allow managers to visually analyze simulated color infrared composite images to map perennial and ephemeral (annual) plant communities. Tentative results indicate that ephemeral plant growth and development and potential to produce forage can be monitored
Social network markets: the influence of network structure when consumers face decisions over many similar choices
In social network markets, the act of consumer choice in these industries is
governed not just by the set of incentives described by conventional consumer
demand theory, but by the choices of others in which an individual's payoff is
an explicit function of the actions of others. We observe two key empirical
features of outcomes in social networked markets. First, a highly right-skewed,
non-Gaussian distribution of the number of times competing alternatives are
selected at a point in time. Second, there is turnover in the rankings of
popularity over time. We show here that such outcomes can arise either when
there is no alternative which exhibits inherent superiority in its attributes,
or when agents find it very difficult to discern any differences in quality
amongst the alternatives which are available so that it is as if no superiority
exists. These features appear to obtain, as a reasonable approximation, in many
social network markets. We examine the impact of network structure on both the
rank-size distribution of choices at a point in time, and on the life spans of
the most popular choices. We show that a key influence on outcomes is the
extent to which the network follows a hierarchical structure. It is the social
network properties of the markets, the meso-level structure, which determine
outcomes rather than the objective attributes of the products.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Piezoresistor-Embedded Multifunctional Magnetic Microactuators for Implantable Self-Clearing Catheter
Indwelling catheters are used widely in medicine to treat various chronic medical conditions. However, chronic implantation of catheters often leads to a premature failure due to biofilm accumulation. Previously we reported on the development of a self-clearing catheter by integrating polymer-based microscale magnetic actuators. The microactuator provides an active anti-biofouling mechanism to disrupt and remove adsorbed biofilm on demand using an externally applied stimulus. During an in vivo evaluation of self-clearing catheter, we realized that it is important to periodically monitor the performance of implanted microactuators. Here we integrate gold-based piezoresistive strain-gauge on our magnetic microactuators to directly monitor the device deflection with good sensitivity (0.035%/Deg) and linear range (±30°). With the integrated strain-gauge, we demonstrate the multi-functional capabilities of our magnetic microactuators that enable device alignment, flow-rate measurement, and obstruction detection and removal towards the development of chronically implantable self-clearing smart catheter
