    Oikos nomos Vs. oikos logos? Towards the alliance between business management and environmental sustainability

    Environmental sustainability is a topic that is increasingly becoming popular and companies are not excluded from this phenomenon. On the contrary, their responsibility towards environment is increasingly in the public eye, so that the same companies pay more and more attention to communicating their commitment to all stakeholders in order to improve their image and reputation. Furthermore, from a scientific point of view, a growing array of studies also investigates how to measure sustainability with the aim of defining more accurate indicators of the environmental impact generated by companies. This work has a threefold objective: 1) highlighting firstly the compatibility between the companies’ activities and green strategies through the analysis of those studies that demonstrate the benefits of implementing eco-sustainable practices; 2) describing the approach actually implemented by the companies; 3) description of the phenomenon of greenwashing that is a kind of communication through which some companies try to appear eco-sustainable, even though they are not.. In the final part of the work some cases of greenwashing are exposed, specifying the negative consequences they have sparked. The relationship between ecology and economics is, indeed, not contrasting but, on the contrary, strongly symbiotic, from the etymological origin of the two terms to the positive effects produced by green strategies, as demonstrated by many studies in literature

    Chiral spin currents and spectroscopically accessible single merons in quantum dots

    We provide unambiguous theoretical evidence for the formation of correlation-induced isolated merons in rotationally-symmetric quantum dots. Our calculations rely on neither the lowest-Landau-level approximation, nor on the maximum-density-droplet approximation, nor on the existence of a spin-polarized state. For experimentally accessible system parameters, unbound merons condense in the ground state at magnetic fields as low as B=0.2B^* = 0.2 T and for as few as N = 3 confined fermions. The four-fold degenerate ground-state at BB^* corresponds to four orthogonal merons QC\ket{QC} characterized by their topological chirality CC and charge QQ. This degeneracy is lifted by the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction, which we include perturbatively, yielding spectroscopic accessibility to individual merons. We further derive a closed-form expression for the topological chirality in the form of a chiral spin current and use it to both characterize our states and predict the existence of other topological textures in other regions of phase space, for example, at N=5. Finally, we compare the spin textures of our numerically exact meron states to ansatz wave-functions of merons in quantum Hall droplets and find that the ansatz qualitatively describes the meron states.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; minor title change, typos fixe

    Pressure dependence of the Verwey transition in magnetite: an infrared spectroscopic point of view

    We investigated the electronic and vibrational properties of magnetite at temperatures from 300 K down to 10 K and for pressures up to 10 GPa by far-infrared reflectivity measurements. The Verwey transition is manifested by a drastic decrease of the overall reflectance and the splitting of the phonon modes as well as the activation of additional phonon modes. In the whole studied pressure range the down-shift of the overall reflectance spectrum saturates and the maximum number of phonon modes is reached at a critical temperature, which sets a lower bound for the Verwey transition temperature Tv_{\mathrm{v}}.     Low loss Ge-on-Si waveguides operating in the 8–14 µm atmospheric transmission window

    Germanium-on-silicon waveguides were modeled, fabricated and characterized at wavelengths ranging from 7.5 to 11 µm. Measured waveguide losses are below 5 dB/cm for both TE and TM polarization and reach values of ∼ 1 dB/cm for ≥ 10 µm wavelengths for the TE polarization. This work demonstrates experimentally for the first time that Ge-on-Si is a viable waveguide platform for sensing in the molecular fingerprint spectral region. Detailed modeling and analysis is presented to identify the various loss contributions, showing that with practical techniques losses below 1 dB/cm could be achieved across the full measurement range

    Exploring the role of fallopian ciliated cells in the pathogenesis of high-grade serous ovarian cancer

    High-grade serous epithelial ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women and the first among gynecological malignancies. Despite an initial response to standard chemotherapy, most HGSOC patients relapse. To improve treatment options, we must continue investigating tumor biology. Tumor characteristics (e.g., risk factors and epidemiology) are valuable clues to accomplish this task. The two most frequent risk factors for HGSOC are the lifetime number of ovulations, which is associated with increased oxidative stress in the pelvic area caused by ovulation fluid, and a positive family history due to genetic factors. In the attempt to identify novel genetic factors (i.e., genes) associated with HGSOC, we observed that several genes in linkage with HGSOC are expressed in the ciliated cells of the fallopian tube. This finding made us hypothesize that ciliated cells, despite not being the cell of origin for HGSOC, may take part in HGSOC tumor initiation. Specifically, malfunction of the ciliary beat impairs the laminar fluid flow above the fallopian tube epithelia, thus likely reducing the clearance of oxidative stress caused by follicular fluid. Herein, we review the up-to-date findings dealing with HGSOC predisposition with the hypothesis that fallopian ciliated cells take part in HGSOC onset. Finally, we review the up-to-date literature concerning genes that are located in genomic loci associated with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) predisposition that are expressed by the fallopian ciliated cells

    The difficult alliance between vegan parents and pediatrician: A case report

    The number of children on a vegetarian or vegan diet is gradually increasing. If not balanced and adequately supplemented, these dietary regimes can seriously impact the growth of children. Often the pediatrician is not perceived as a figure to rely on in the event of parents’ willingness to follow an alternative diet for their child. The feeling of distrust of parents towards the pediatrician can be dangerous for the health of the child. We present a 22-month-old boy with failure to thrive probably induced by an unbalanced vegetarian diet. The acquisition of the anamnestic data concerning the child’s diet was difficult because initially omitted by the parents. The poor compliance and the difficult follow-up highlights the difficulty in establishing a therapeutic alliance between parents who follow alternative regimens and the pediatrician

    How affordances associated with a distractor object affect compatibility effects: a study with the computational model TRoPICALS.

    Seeing an object activates both visual and action codes in the brain. Crucial evidence supporting this view is the observation of object to response compatibility effects: perception of an object can facilitate or interfere with the execution of an action (e.g., grasping) even when the viewer has no intention of interacting with the object. TRoPICALS is a computational model that proposes some general principles about the brain mechanisms underlying compatibility effects, in particular the idea that top-down bias from prefrontal cortex, and whether it conflicts or not with the actions afforded by an object, plays a key role in such phenomena. Experiments on compatibility effects using a target and a distractor object show the usual positive compatibility effect of the target, but also an interesting negative compatibility effect of the distractor: responding with a grip compatible with the distractor size produces slower reaction times than the incompatible case. Here, we present an enhanced version of TRoPICALS that reproduces and explains these new results. This explanation is based on the idea that the prefrontal cortex plays a double role in its top-down guidance of action selection producing: (a) a positive bias in favour of the action requested by the experimental task; (b) a negative bias directed to inhibiting the action evoked by the distractor. The model also provides testable predictions on the possible consequences of damage to volitional circuits such as in Parkinsonian patients

    Optical properties of highly n-doped germanium obtained by in situ doping and laser annealing

    High n-type doping in germanium is essential for many electronic and optoelectronic applications especially for high performance Ohmic contacts, lasing and mid-infrared plasmonics. We report on the combination of in situ doping and excimer laser annealing to improve the activation of phosphorous in germanium. An activated n-doping concentration of 8.8  ×  1019 cm−3 has been achieved starting from an incorporated phosphorous concentration of 1.1  ×  1020 cm−3. Infrared reflectivity data fitted with a multi-layer Drude model indicate good uniformity over a 350 nm thick layer. Photoluminescence demonstrates clear bandgap narrowing and an increased ratio of direct to indirect bandgap emission confirming the high doping densities achieved

    Many software engineering tools build and evaluate their models based on historical data to support development and process decisions. These models help us answer numerous interesting questions, but have their own caveats. In a real-life setting, the objective function of human decision-makers for a given task might be influenced by a whole host of factors that stem from their cognitive biases, subverting the ideal objective function required for an optimally functioning system. Relying on this data as ground truth may give rise to systems that end up automating software engineering decisions by mimicking past sub-optimal behaviour. We illustrate this phenomenon and suggest mitigation strategies to raise awareness
