    Molecular Flexibility and Bend in Semi‐Rigid Liquid Crystals: Implications for the Heliconical Nematic Ground State

    The NTB phase phases possess a local helical structure with a pitch length of a few nanometers and is typically exhibited by materials consisting of two rigid mesogenic units linked by a flexibile oligomethylene spacer of odd parity, giving a bent shape. We report the synthesis and characterisation of two novel dimeric liquid crystals, and perform a computational study on ten cyanobiphenyl dimers with varying linking groups, generating a large library of conformers for each compound; this allows us to present molecular bend angles as probability weighted averages of many conformers, rather than use a single conformer. We validate conformer libraries by comparison of interproton distances with those obtained from solution based 1D 1H NOESY NMR, finding good agreement between experiment and computational work. Conversely, we find that using any single conformer fails to reproduce experimental interproton distances. We find the use of a single conformer significantly overestimates the molecular bend angle while also ignoring flexibility; we show that the average bend angle and flexibility are both linked to the relative stability of the NTB phase

    Techniques for measuring atmospheric aerosols at the High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment

    We describe several techniques developed by the High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment for measuring aerosol vertical optical depth, aerosol horizontal attenuation length, and aerosol phase function. The techniques are based on measurements of side-scattered light generated by a steerable ultraviolet laser and collected by an optical detector designed to measure fluorescence light from cosmic-ray air showers. We also present a technique to cross-check the aerosol optical depth measurement using air showers observed in stereo.     Study of Small-Scale Anisotropy of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays Observed in Stereo by HiRes

    The High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) experiment is an air fluorescence detector which, operating in stereo mode, has a typical angular resolution of 0.6 degrees and is sensitive to cosmic rays with energies above 10^18 eV. HiRes is thus an excellent instrument for the study of the arrival directions of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. We present the results of a search for anisotropies in the distribution of arrival directions on small scales (<5 degrees) and at the highest energies (>10^19 eV). The search is based on data recorded between 1999 December and 2004 January, with a total of 271 events above 10^19 eV. No small-scale anisotropy is found, and the strongest clustering found in the HiRes stereo data is consistent at the 52% level with the null hypothesis of isotropically distributed arrival directions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.     Factitious lymphoedema as a psychiatric condition mimicking reflex sympathetic dystrophy: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Reflex sympathetic dystrophy can result in severe disability with only one in five patients able to fully resume prior activities. Therefore, it is important to diagnose this condition early and begin appropriate treatment. Factitious lymphoedema can mimic reflex sympathetic dystrophy and is caused by self-inflicted tourniquets, blows to the arm or repeated skin irritation. Patients with factitious lymphoedema have an underlying psychiatric disorder but usually present to emergency or orthopaedics departments. Factitious lymphoedema can then be misdiagnosed as reflex sympathetic dystrophy. The treatment for factitious lymphoedema is dealing with the underlying psychiatric condition.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We share our experience of treating a 33-year-old man, who presented with factitious lymphoedema, initially diagnosed as reflex sympathetic dystrophy.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Awareness of this very similar differential diagnosis allows early appropriate treatment to be administered.</p

    We have measured the cosmic ray spectrum above 10^17.2 eV using the two air fluorescence detectors of the High Resolution Fly's Eye observatory operating in monocular mode. We describe the detector, photo-tube and atmospheric calibrations, as well as the analysis techniques for the two detectors.     High lateral portal for sparing the infrapatellar fat-pad during ACL reconstruction

    SummaryDuring arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, intra-articular visualization can be compromised by the interposition of the infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) between the scope and the notch. In this technical note, we describe our technique of using lateral higher arthroscopic portal, starting arthroscopy with the resection of the ligamentum mucosum and performing the tibial tunnel in 40° of knee flexion to optimise the intra-articular view without IPFP debridement. This technique was performed in 112 consecutive arthroscopic ACL reconstructions and compared to that in the previous 112 cases in which a conventional method was used. The use of this technique was associated with a shorter operative time and no increase in the difficulty in performing associated meniscal procedures
