    Improved setup for producing slow beams of cold molecules using a rotating nozzle

    Intense beams of cold and slow molecules are produced by supersonic expansion out of a rapidly rotating nozzle, as first demonstrated by Gupta and Herschbach. An improved setup is presented that allows to accelerate or decelerate cold atomic and molecular beams by up to 500 m/s. Technical improvements are discussed and beam parameters are characterized by detailed analysis of time of flight density distributions. The possibility of combining this beam source with electrostatic fields for guiding polar molecules is demonstrated

    Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Semiflexible Polyampholyte Brushes - The Effect of Charged Monomers Sequence

    Planar brushes formed by end-grafted semiflexible polyampholyte chains, each chain containing equal number of positively and negatively charged monomers is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. Keeping the length of the chains fixed, dependence of the average brush thickness and equilibrium statistics of the brush conformations on the grafting density and the salt concentration are obtained with various sequences of charged monomers. When similarly charged monomers of the chains are arranged in longer blocks, the average brush thickness is smaller and dependence of brush properties on the grafting density and the salt concentration is stronger. With such long blocks of similarly charged monomers, the anchored chains bond to each other in the vicinity of the grafting surface at low grafting densities and buckle toward the grafting surface at high grafting densities.Comment: 8 pages,7 figure

    On field theory quantization around instantons

    The modular geometry of Random Regge Triangulations

    We show that the introduction of triangulations with variable connectivity and fluctuating egde-lengths (Random Regge Triangulations) allows for a relatively simple and direct analyisis of the modular properties of 2 dimensional simplicial quantum gravity. In particular, we discuss in detail an explicit bijection between the space of possible random Regge triangulations (of given genus g and with N vertices) and a suitable decorated version of the (compactified) moduli space of genus g Riemann surfaces with N punctures.     Classical Jacobi polynomials Pn(α,β)P_{n}^{(\alpha,\beta)}, with α,β>1\alpha, \beta>-1, have a number of well-known properties, in particular the location of their zeros in the open interval (1,1)(-1,1). This property is no longer valid for other values of the parameters; in general, zeros are complex. In this paper we study the strong asymptotics of Jacobi polynomials where the real parameters αn,βn\alpha_n,\beta_n depend on nn in such a way that limnαnn=A,limnβnn=B, \lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{\alpha_{n}}{n}=A, \quad \lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{\beta_{n}}{n}=B, with A,BRA,B \in \mathbb{R}. We restrict our attention to the case where the limits A,BA,B are not both positive and take values outside of the triangle bounded by the straight lines A=0, B=0 and A+B+2=0A+B+2=0. As a corollary, we show that in the limit the zeros distribute along certain curves that constitute trajectories of a quadratic differential. The non-hermitian orthogonality relations for Jacobi polynomials with varying parameters lie in the core of our approach; in the cases we consider, these relations hold on a single contour of the complex plane. The asymptotic analysis is performed using the Deift-Zhou steepest descent method based on the Riemann-Hilbert reformulation of Jacobi polynomials.Comment: 37 pages, 10 figure

    From Matrices to Strings and Back

    We discuss an explicit construction of a string dual for the Gaussian matrix model. Starting from the matrix model and employing Strebel differential techniques we deduce hints about the structure of the dual string. Next, following these hints a worldheet theory is constructed. The correlators in this string theory are assumed to localize on a finite set of points in the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. To each such point one associates a Feynman diagram contributing to the correlator in the dual matrix model, and thus recasts the worldsheet expression as a sum over Feynman diagrams.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figure

    Robotic-assisted laparoscopic extended pelvic lymph node dissection for prostate cancer: surgical technique and experience with the first 99 cases

    BACKGROUND: To date, there is still a paucity of data in the literature on robotic-assisted laparoscopic extended pelvic lymph node dissection (RALEPLND) in patients with prostate cancer. OBJECTIVE: To assess the technical feasibility of RALEPLND and to present our surgical technique. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: From April 2006 to March 2008, we performed RALEPLND in 99 patients prior to robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Indications for RALEPLND were a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) >/=10 ng/ml or a preoperative Gleason score >/=7. The data were evaluated retrospectively. SURGICAL PROCEDURE: The transperitoneal approach was used in all cases. In order to gain optimal access to the common iliac bifurcation, the five trocars were placed in a more cephalad position than in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy without RALEPLND. After identification of important landmarks, the lymphatics covering the external iliac vein, the obturator lymphatic packet, and the lymphatics overlying the internal iliac artery were removed on both sides. MEASUREMENTS: The total lymph node yield, the frequency of lymph node metastases, and the complication rate. RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: The median patient age was 64 yr (range: 45-78). The median preoperative PSA level was 7.7 ng/ml (range: 1.5-84.6). The median number of lymph nodes harvested was 19 (range: 8-53). In 16 patients (16%), we found lymph node metastasis. Complications occurred in seven patients (7%). CONCLUSIONS: RALEPLND is feasible, and its lymph node yield is well in the range of open series. The robotic-assisted laparoscopic approach in itself does not seem to limit a surgeon's ability to perform a complete extended pelvic lymph node dissection

    On the worldsheet theories of strings dual to free large N gauge theories

    We analyze in detail some properties of the worldsheet of the closed string theories suggested by Gopakumar to be dual to free large N SU(N) gauge theories (with adjoint matter fields). We use Gopakumar's prescription to translate the computation of space-time correlation functions to worldsheet correlation functions for several classes of Feynman diagrams, by explicit computations of Strebel differentials. We compute the worldsheet operator product expansion in several cases and find that it is consistent with general worldsheet conformal field theory expectations. A peculiar property of the construction is that in several cases the resulting worldsheet correlation functions are non-vanishing only on a sub-space of the moduli space (say, for specific relations between vertex positions). Another strange property we find is that for a conformally invariant space-time theory, the mapping to the worldsheet does not preserve the special conformal symmetries, so that the full conformal group is not realized as a global symmetry on the worldsheet (even though it is, by construction, a symmetry of all integrated correlation functions).Comment: 60 pages, 17 figures, latex. v2: Added references and a minor correctio
