Six-degree-of-freedom program to optimize simulated trajectories (6D POST). Volume 1: Formulation manual
The basic equations and models used in a computer program (6D POST) to optimize simulated trajectories with six degrees of freedom were documented. The 6D POST program was conceived as a direct extension of the program POST, which dealt with point masses, and considers the general motion of a rigid body with six degrees of freedom. It may be used to solve a wide variety of atmospheric flight mechanics and orbital transfer problems for powered or unpowered vehicles operating near a rotating oblate planet. Its principal features are: an easy to use NAMELIST type input procedure, an integrated set of Flight Control System (FCS) modules, and a general-purpose discrete parameter targeting and optimization capability. It was written in FORTRAN 4 for the CDC 6000 series computers
Exploration of Marine Resources by Photographic Remote Sensing
The interpretation of photographs in oceanographic remote sensing is discussed. The photographs were made from spacecraft with two exceptions. Two photographs were made from aircraft. There were three types of film used to make the photographs: black-and-white, color, and color IR. Black and white photography is well known; it presents pictures in various shades of gray from black to white. Color film presents pictures in color, very nearly as the human eye sees them. Color IR film presents pictures in color also but not as seen by the human eye. Blue becomes much deeper blue, green is suppressed to some extent, and red is recorded beyond the visual range of the human eye, out in the near infrared. The most noticeable effect of the use of color IR film is that leaf materials which are highly reflective in the infrared part of the spectrum are presented as red
Characterization of Active Main Belt Object P/2012 F5 (Gibbs): A Possible Impacted Asteroid
In this work we characterize the recently discovered active main belt object
P/2012 F5 (Gibbs), which was discovered with a dust trail > 7' in length in the
outer main belt, 7 months prior to aphelion. We use optical imaging obtained on
UT 2012 March 27 to analyze the central condensation and the long trail. We
find nuclear B-band and R-band apparent magnitudes of 20.96 and 19.93 mag,
respectively, which give an upper limit on the radius of the nucleus of 2.1 km.
The geometric cross-section of material in the trail was ~ 4 x 10^8 m^2,
corresponding to a dust mass of ~ 5 x 10^7 kg. Analysis of infrared images
taken by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer in September 2010 reveals that
the object was below the detection limit, suggesting that it was less active
than it was during 2012, or possibly inactive, just 6 months after it passed
through perihelion. We set a 1-sigma upper limit on its radius during this time
of 2.9 km. P/2012 F5 (Gibbs) is dynamically stable in the outer main belt on
timescales of ~ 1 Gyr, pointing towards an asteroidal origin. We find that the
morphology of the ejected dust is consistent with it being produced by a single
event that occurred on UT 2011 July 7 20 days, possibly as the result of

Lingering grains of truth around comet 17P/Holmes
Comet 17P/Holmes underwent a massive outburst in 2007 Oct., brightening by a
factor of almost a million in under 48 hours. We used infrared images taken by
the Wide-Field Survey Explorer mission to characterize the comet as it appeared
at a heliocentric distance of 5.1 AU almost 3 years after the outburst. The
comet appeared to be active with a coma and dust trail along the orbital plane.
We constrained the diameter, albedo, and beaming parameter of the nucleus to
4.135 0.610 km, 0.03 0.01 and 1.03 0.21, respectively. The
properties of the nucleus are consistent with those of other Jupiter Family
comets. The best-fit temperature of the coma was 134 11 K, slightly
higher than the blackbody temperature at that heliocentric distance. Using
Finson-Probstein modeling we found that the morphology of the trail was
consistent with ejection during the 2007 outburst and was made up of dust
grains between 250 m and a few cm in radius. The trail mass was 1.2

An Improbable Solution to the Underluminosity of 2M1207B: A Hot Protoplanet Collision Afterglow
We introduce an alternative hypothesis to explain the very low luminosity of
the cool (L-type) companion to the ~25 M_Jup ~8 Myr-old brown dwarf 2M1207A.
Recently, Mohanty et al. (2007) found that effective temperature estimates for
2M1207B (1600 +- 100 K) are grossly inconsistent with its lying on the same
isochrone as the primary, being a factor of ~10 underluminous at all bands
between I (0.8 um) and L' (3.6 um). Mohanty et al. explain this discrepency by
suggesting that 2M1207B is an 8 M_Jup object surrounded by an edge-on disk
comprised of large dust grains producing 2.5^m of achromatic extinction. We
offer an alternative explanation: the apparent flux reflects the actual source
luminosity. Given the temperature, we infer a small radius (~49,000 km), and
for a range of plausible densities, we estimate a mass < M_Jup. We suggest that
2M1207B is a hot protoplanet collision afterglow and show that the radiative
timescale for such an object is >~1% the age of the system. If our hypothesis
is correct, the surface gravity of 2M1207B should be an order of magnitude
lower than predicted by Mohanty et al. (2007).Comment: ApJ Letters, in press (11 pages
Challenging the orthodoxy: union learning representatives as organic intellectuals
Teacher education and continuing professional development have become a key areas of controversy in England since the period of school sector restructuring following the 1988 Education Reform Act. More recently teacher training and professional development have often been used to promote and reinforce a narrow focus on the government’s ‘standards agenda’. However, the emerging discourse of ‘new professionalism’ has raised the profile of professional development in schools, and together with union learning representatives, there are opportunities to secure real improvements in teachers’ access to continuing professional development. This paper argues however that union learning representatives must go beyond advocating for better access to professional development and should raise more fundamental questions about the nature of professional development and the education system it serves. Drawing on Gramsci’s notion of the ‘organic intellectual’, the paper argues that union learning representatives have a key role as organisers of ideas – creating spaces in which the ideological dominance of current policy orthodoxy might be challenged
Asteroid family identification using the Hierarchical Clustering Method and WISE/NEOWISE physical properties
Using albedos from WISE/NEOWISE to separate distinct albedo groups within the
Main Belt asteroids, we apply the Hierarchical Clustering Method to these
subpopulations and identify dynamically associated clusters of asteroids. While
this survey is limited to the ~35% of known Main Belt asteroids that were
detected by NEOWISE, we present the families linked from these objects as
higher confidence associations than can be obtained from dynamical linking
alone. We find that over one-third of the observed population of the Main Belt
is represented in the high-confidence cores of dynamical families. The albedo
distribution of family members differs significantly from the albedo
distribution of background objects in the same region of the Main Belt, however
interpretation of this effect is complicated by the incomplete identification
of lower-confidence family members. In total we link 38,298 asteroids into 76
distinct families. This work represents a critical step necessary to debias the
albedo and size distributions of asteroids in the Main Belt and understand the

NEOWISE observations of comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) as it approaches Mars
The Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) mission
observed comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) three times at 3.4 {\mu}m and 4.6
{\mu}m as the comet approached Mars in 2014. The comet is an extremely
interesting target since its close approach to Mars in late 2014 will be
observed by various spacecraft in-situ. The observations were taken in 2014
Jan., Jul. and Sep. when the comet was at heliocentric distances of 3.82 AU,
1.88 AU, and 1.48 AU. The level of activity increased significantly between the
Jan. and Jul. visits but then decreased by the time of the observations in
Sep., approximately 4 weeks prior to its close approach to Mars. In this work

Free induction decay of a superposition stored in a quantum dot
We study the free evolution of a superposition initialized with high fidelity
in the neutral-exciton state of a quantum dot. Readout of the state at later
times is achieved by polarized photon detection, averaged over a large number
of cycles. By controlling the fine-structure splitting (FSS) of the dot with a
dc electric field, we show a reduction in the degree of polarization of the
signal when the splitting is minimized. In analogy with the "free induction
decay" observed in nuclear magnetic resonance, we attribute this to hyperfine
interactions with nuclei in the semiconductor. We numerically model this effect
and find good agreement with experimental studies. Our findings have
implications for storage of superpositions in solid-state systems and for
entangled photon pair emission protocols that require a small value of the FSS
