Analytic structure of the S-matrix for singular quantum mechanics
The analytic structure of the S-matrix of singular quantum mechanics is examined within a multichannel framework, with primary focus on its dependence with respect to a parameter (Ω) that determines the boundary conditions. Specifically, a characterization is given in terms of salient mathematical and physical properties governing its behavior. These properties involve unitarity and associated current-conserving Wronskian relations, time-reversal invariance, and Blaschke factorization. The approach leads to an interpretation of effective nonunitary solutions in singular quantum mechanics and their determination from the unitary family.Fil: Camblong, Horacio E.. Tangential Motions and Spectroscopy within NGC 6720, the Ring Nebula
We have combined recent Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images in the [O III]
5007 and [N II] 6583 lines with similar images made 9.557 years earlier to
determine the motion of the Ring Nebula within the plane of the sky. Scaled
ratio images argue for homologous expansion, that is, larger velocities scale
with increasing distance from the central star. The rather noisy pattern of
motion of individual features argues for the same conclusion and that the
silhouetted knots move at the same rate as the surrounding gas. These
tangential velocities are combined with information from a recent high
resolution radial velocity study to determine a dynamic distance, which is in
basic agreement with the distance determined from the parallax of the central
star. We have also obtained very high signal to noise ratio moderate resolution
spectra (9.4 Angstrom) along the major and minor axes of the nebula and from
this determined the electron temperatures and density in the multiple
ionization zones present. These results confirm the status of the Ring Nebula
as one of the older planetary nebulae, with a central star transitioning to the
white dwarf cooling curve. (Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble

Space-charge calculation for bunched beams with 3-D ellipsoidal symmetry
A method for calculating 3-D space-charge forces has been developed that is suitable for bunched beams of either ions or relativistic electrons. The method is based on the analytic relations between charge-density and electric fields for a distribution with 3-D ellipsoidal symmetry in real space. At each step we use a Fourier-series representation for the smooth particle-density function obtained from the distribution of the macroparticles being tracked through the elements of the system. The resulting smooth electric fields reduce the problem of noise from artificial collisions, associated with small numbers of interacting macroparticles. First-principles calculations of the structural, electronic, vibrational and magnetic properties of C_{60} and C_{48}N_{12}: a comparative study
In this work, we perform first-principles calculations of the structural,
electronic, vibrational and magnetic properties of a novel azafullerene. Full geometrical optimization shows that is characterized by several distinguishing features: only
one nitrogen atom per pentagon, two nitrogen atoms preferentially sitting in
one hexagon, symmetry, 6 unique nitrogen-carbon and 9 unique
carbon-carbon bond lengths. The highest occupied molecular orbital of is a doubly degenerate level of symmetry and its
lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is a nondegenerate level of
symmetry. Vibrational frequency analysis predicts that has in total 116 vibrational modes: 58 infrared-active and 58
Raman-active modes. is also characterized by 8
and 2 NMR spectral signals. Compared to , shows an enhanced third-order optical
nonlinearities which implies potential applications in optical limiting and

Theory of imaging a photonic crystal with transmission near-field optical microscopy
While near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) can provide optical
images with resolution much better than the diffraction limit, analysis and
interpretation of these images is often difficult. We present a theory of
imaging with transmission NSOM that includes the effects of tip field,
tip/sample coupling, light propagation through the sample and light collection.
We apply this theory to analyze experimental NSOM images of a nanochannel glass
(NCG) array obtained in transmission mode. The NCG is a triangular array of
dielectric rods in a dielectric glass matrix with a two-dimensional photonic
band structure. We determine the modes for the NCG photonic crystal and
simulate the observed data. The calculations show large contrast at low
numerical aperture (NA) of the collection optics and detailed structure at high
NA consistent with the observed images. We present calculations as a function
of NA to identify how the NCG photonic modes contribute to and determine the
spatial structure in these images. Calculations are presented as a function of
tip/sample position, sample index contrast and geometry, and aperture size to
identify the factors that determine image formation with transmission NSOM in

Temperate Eurasian Origins of Hawaiian Chenopodium (Amaranthaceae) plus description of a new species endemic to Moloka‘i
Chenopodium taxa of Hawai‘i are tetraploids distinguished from other members of the circumglobally distributed genus by minute morphological characters. Because of these reasons, the geographic origin of Hawaiian Chenopodium has remained unclear. Across the Hawaiian Archipelago, Chenopodium taxa are morphologically variable and grow in highly disparate xeric habitats, especially in terms of precipitation, temperature, wind, salt spray, and solar irradiation. Habitats include dry subalpine shrublands, sandy beach strand of atolls in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands, dry forests, and precipitously tall sea cliffs of northwestern Moloka‘i. From the Moloka‘i sea cliffs, which are battered by high energy winds, salt spray, and strong seasonal precipitation, we describe C. oahuense subspecies ilioensis as segregated from the widespread Hawaiian C. oahuense s.l. Morphometric analyses distinguish C. oahuense ssp. ilioensis through its strongly prostrate to scandent habit, thick succulent leaves, smaller average leaf sizes, limited leaf margin lobing, and smaller seeds. Phylogenetic analyses using two DNA regions (the plastid gene rpl32-trnL and nuclear ITS1-5.85 rDNA-ITS2) of newly sequenced C. oahuense s.l. and C. oahuense ssp. ilioensis individuals plus outgroup taxa support monophyly of Hawaiian Chenopodium and reveal a geographic origin of temperate Eurasia. Two equivocal hypothetical scenarios are discussed regarding the likely sequence of events leading to the arrival of Chenopodium in Hawaiian Islands followed by possible in situ speciation of the Moloka‘i endemic C. oahuense ssp. ilioensis
Recombination Line vs. Forbidden Line Abundances in Planetary Nebulae
Recombination lines (RLs) of C II, N II, and O II in planetary nebulae (PNs)
have been found to give abundances that are much larger in some cases than
abundances from collisionally-excited forbidden lines (CELs). The origins of
this abundance discrepancy are highly debated. We present new spectroscopic
observations of O II and C II recombination lines for six planetary nebulae.
With these data we compare the abundances derived from the optical
recombination lines with those determined from collisionally-excited lines.
Combining our new data with published results on RLs in other PNs, we examine
the discrepancy in abundances derived from RLs and CELs. We find that there is
a wide range in the measured abundance discrepancy Delta(O+2) = log O+2(RL) -
log O+2(CEL), ranging from approximately 0.1 dex up to 1.4 dex. Most RLs yield
similar abundances, with the notable exception of O II multiplet V15, known to
arise primarily from dielectronic recombination, which gives abundances
averaging 0.6 dex higher than other O II RLs. We compare Delta(O+2) against a
variety of physical properties of the PNs to look for clues as to the mechanism
responsible for the abundance discrepancy. The strongest correlations are found
with the nebula diameter and the Balmer surface brightness. An inverse
correlation of Delta(O+2) with nebular density is also seen. Similar results
are found for carbon in comparing C II RL abundances with ultraviolet
