Fabrication of Bone Substitute Material by Rapid Prototyping
Bone tissue engineering has gained much attention in recent years. A key requirement in this
field is the development of scaffold structures, on which cells adhere. This can be done by
fabricating scaffolds by direct procedures like 3D-printing or by indirect procedures like casting.
With the 3D-printing process different structures were build up by using hydroxyapatite powder
(HA) and a special binder material. Afterwards the printed 3D structures were sintered.
For the casting process molds have been made of different resins by stereolithography and other
processes using polymers and waxes. These structures were filled by a suspension of HA. By
heating the resulting polymer/ceramic composite to a specific temperature it is possible to
combust the polymer or wax. By further heating the remaining body, the HA is sintered.
Compared to the 3D printing a better resolution can be obtained here. But there are restrictions
regarding the ratio of polymer and the HA ceramic during the heating process which means a
limitation for the level of porosity.Mechanical Engineerin
Quantum interference and entanglement induced by multiple scattering of light
We report on the effects of quantum interference induced by transmission of
an arbitrary number of optical quantum states through a multiple scattering
medium. We identify the role of quantum interference on the photon correlations
and the degree of continuous variable entanglement between two output modes. It
is shown that the effect of quantum interference survives averaging over all
ensembles of disorder and manifests itself as increased photon correlations
giving rise to photon anti-bunching. Finally, the existence of continuous
variable entanglement correlations in a volume speckle pattern is predicted.
Our results suggest that multiple scattering provides a promising way of
coherently interfering many independent quantum states of light of potential
use in quantum information processing.Comment: 5 pages including 4 figure
Magnetic properties of PrCu at high pressure
We report a study of the low-temperature high-pressure phase diagram of the
intermetallic compound PrCu, by means of molecular-field calculations and
Cu nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) measurements under pressure.
The pressure-induced magnetically-ordered phase can be accounted for by
considering the influence of the crystal electric field on the electron
orbitals of the Pr ions and by introducing a pressure-dependent exchange
interaction between the corresponding local magnetic moments. Our experimental
data suggest that the order in the induced antiferromagnetic phase is
incommensurate. The role of magnetic fluctuations both at high and low
pressures is also discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J.
The emergence of coherence in complex networks of heterogeneous dynamical systems
We present a general theory for the onset of coherence in collections of
heterogeneous maps interacting via a complex connection network. Our method
allows the dynamics of the individual uncoupled systems to be either chaotic or
periodic, and applies generally to networks for which the number of connections
per node is large. We find that the critical coupling strength at which a
transition to synchrony takes place depends separately on the dynamics of the
individual uncoupled systems and on the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency
matrix of the coupling network. Our theory directly generalizes the Kuramoto
model of equal strength, all-to-all coupled phase oscillators to the case of
oscillators with more realistic dynamics coupled via a large heterogeneous
network.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. Published versio
A Black Hole in the Galactic Center Complex IRS 13E?
The IRS 13E complex is an unusual concentration of massive, early-type stars
at a projected distance of ~0.13 pc from the Milky Way's central supermassive
black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). Because of their similar proper motion and
their common nature as massive, young stars it has recently been suggested that
IRS 13E may be the remnant of a massive stellar cluster containing an
intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) that binds its members gravitationally in
the tidal field of Sgr A*. Here, we present an analysis of the proper motions
in the IRS~13E environment that combines the currently best available data with
a time line of 10 years. We find that an IMBH in IRS 13E must have a minimum
mass of ~10^4 solar masses in order to bind the source complex gravitationally.
This high mass limit in combination with the absence so far of compelling
evidence for a non-thermal radio and X-ray source in IRS 13E make it appear
unlikely that an IMBH exists in IRS 13E that is sufficiently massive to bind
the system gravitationally.Comment: accepted by AP
Synchronization in large directed networks of coupled phase oscillators
We extend recent theoretical approximations describing the transition to
synchronization in large undirected networks of coupled phase oscillators to
the case of directed networks. We also consider extensions to networks with
mixed positive/negative coupling strengths. We compare our theory with
numerical simulations and find good agreement
Optical evidence for a spin-filter effect in the charge transport of
We have measured the optical reflectivity of
as a function of temperature between 1.5 and 300
and in external magnetic fields up to 7 . The slope at the onset of the
plasma edge feature in increases with decreasing temperature and
increasing field but the plasma edge itself does not exhibit the remarkable
blue shift that is observed in the binary compound . The analysis of
the magnetic field dependence of the low temperature optical conductivity
spectrum confirms the previously observed exponential decrease of the
electrical resistivity upon increasing, field-induced bulk magnetization at
constant temperature. In addition, the individual exponential magnetization
dependences of the plasma frequency and scattering rate are extracted from the
optical data.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
