    Optical Properties of Pure and Alloyed Silver-Copper Nanoparticles Embedded and Coupled in Dielectric Matrixes

    AbstractIn this study by using the boundary element method, influence of various parameters on the response to electromagnetic radiation for pure and alloyed silver-copper was investigated. The results demonstrate decreasing interparticle gap from 20nm to 1nm for silver coupled nanoparticles leads to shifting the wavelength of optical extinction peak from 362nm to 393nm. Decreasing interparticle gap from 20nm to 1nm for Cu coupled nanoparticles leads to shifting the wavelength of optical extinction peak from 323nm to 336nm. By an increase in the medium refractive index of 1 to 2 the peak of optical extinction for a coupled Cu nanoparticles with 1nm gap distance the wavelength of plasmon resonance peak shifted from 336nm to 366nm and longitudinal plasmon resonance peak shifted from 498nm to 559nm. By changing the composition of an alloy of copper and silver nanoparticles with diameter of 10nm in dielectric matrix with refractive index 1.3 the wavelength of plasmon resonance peak shifted from 378nm for pure silver nanoparticles to 530nm for pure copper nanoparticles. In addition for Cu-Ag alloy coupled nanoparticles with 1nm interparticle gap, the wavelength of resonance peak shifted from 420nm for pure silver nanoparticles to 544nm for pure copper nanoparticles. In the case of embedded nanoparticles for coupled silver nanoparticles with 6nm gap distance, the wavelength of resonance peak shifted from 396nm to 409nm, and for coupled silver nanoparticles with 2nm gap distance, the wavelength of resonance peak shifted from 414nm to 430nm. Furthermore for coupled Cu nanoparticles with 2nm gap distance, the wavelength of resonance peak shifted from 575nm to 582nm.     Ultimate performance of timber connection with normal screws

    This paper presents the results of experimental push-out tests on two different types of timber composite connections using only normal screws as the shear connecter. The push out tests were conducted based on Eurocode 5 recommendations and the load-slip responses obtained from lab tests are used to determine the stiffness of the connections at serviceability, ultimate and near collapse levels, and the performance of the connections are assessed at ultimate load. Moreover, an analytical model is derived for each type of connection based on the experimental results and using a non linear regression, which can be implemented into non-linear FE analysis of timber beams with normal screws. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group

    Selection of resistance and sensitive cultivars of lentil in Ardabil region of Iran under irrigation and nonirrigation conditions

    In order to evaluate drought tolerance indices of lentil cultivars in the Ardabil region, a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design with three replications was arranged at the Agricultural Research Station of Islamic Azad University, Ardabil branch, Ardabil, Iran, in 2010. The factors included two conditions of planting levels (irrigation and non-irrigation) and five lentil cultivars (ILL 1180, ILL 1324, ILL 1251, ILL1237, and native cultivars). Irrigation included complete irrigation from planting until maturity and non-irrigation from seed emergence until harvesting. The results showed that the length of vegetative and reproductive periods, total number of pod and seed per plant, 100-seed weight, seed yield and harvest index were of higher rates under irrigation than the stress (nonirrigation). Also, it was found that ILL 1180 and ILL 1324 cultivars possessed the highest and lowest values for all traits, respectively. Yield loss of the ILL 1180 under stress, was about 308.22 kg/ha (23.31%) than the normal conditions. This value for the ILL 1324 was approximately 448.53 kg/ha (35.51%). Also, ILL 1180 showed the lowest tolerance against stress (TOL) and stress susceptibility index (SSI) and the highest mean productivity (MP), geometric mean productivity (GMP) and stress tolerance index (STI) indices. ILL 1324 possessed the highest TOL, SSI and STI and ILL1237 showed the lowest MP and GMP indices. So, ILL1180 and ILL1251 were the superior cultivars under both conditions in terms of high yield and tolerance against drought stress.     The Association Between Personality Disorder Traits and Suicidality Following Sudden Bereavement: A National Cross-Sectional Survey

    Personality disorder is associated with increased risk of suicidal behavior. The authors aimed to investigate the association between number of personality disorder traits and suicidality risk following sudden bereavement. A secondary analysis of cross-sectional data on 3,167 young adults in the United Kingdom who had experienced sudden bereavement investigated the association between number of traits (measured using a standardized screening instrument) and postbereavement suicide attempt and suicidal ideation. Using multivariable logistic regression, the authors found a linear relationship between number of traits and suicide attempt (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.36, 95% CI [1.23, 1.49]) and suicidal ideation (AOR = 1.31, 95% CI [1.25, 1.38]) following bereavement. This represented an increase in odds by 36% and 31%, respectively, for each additional personality trait. The authors suggest that individuals with a greater number of traits suggestive of a personality disorder diagnosis are at increased risk of suicidality after a negative life event

    Feasibility and acceptability of NIDUS-professional, a training and support intervention for homecare workers caring for clients living with dementia: a cluster-randomised feasibility trial.

    INTRODUCTION: In the first randomised controlled trial of a dementia training and support intervention in UK homecare agencies, we aimed to assess: acceptability of our co-designed, manualised training, delivered by non-clinical facilitators; outcome completion feasibility; and costs for a future trial. METHODS: This cluster-randomised (2:1) single-blind, feasibility trial involved English homecare agencies. Intervention arm agency staff were offered group videocall sessions: 6 over 3 months, then monthly for 3 months (NIDUS-professional). Family carers (henceforth carers) and clients with dementia (dyads) were offered six to eight complementary, individual intervention sessions (NIDUS-Family). We collected potential trial measures as secondary outcomes remotely at baseline and 6 months: HCW (homecare worker) Work-related Strain Inventory (WRSI), Sense of Competence (SoC); proxy-rated Quality of Life (QOL), Disability Assessment for Dementia scale (DAD), Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) and Homecare Satisfaction (HCS). RESULTS: From December 2021 to September 2022, we met agency (4 intervention, 2 control) and HCWs (n = 62) recruitment targets and recruited 16 carers and 16/60 planned clients. We met a priori progression criteria for adherence (≥4/6 sessions: 29/44 [65.9%,95% confidence interval (CI): 50.1,79.5]), HCW or carer proxy-outcome completion (15/16 (93.8% [69.8,99.8]) and proceeding with adaptation for HCWs outcome completion (46/63 (73.0% [CI: 60.3,83.4]). Delivery of NIDUS-Professional costs was £6,423 (£137 per eligible client). WRSI scores decreased and SoC increased at follow-up, with no significant between-group differences. For intervention arm proxy-rated outcomes, carer-rated QOL increased, HCW-rated was unchanged; carer and HCW-rated NPI decreased; DAD decreased (greater disability) and HCS was unchanged. CONCLUSION: A pragmatic trial is warranted; we will consider using aggregated, agency-level client outcomes, including neuropsychiatric symptoms
