A metapopulation model with Markovian landscape dynamics
We study a variant of Hanski's incidence function model that allows habitat
patch characteristics to vary over time following a Markov process. The widely
studied case where patches are classified as either suitable or unsuitable is
included as a special case. For large metapopulations, we determine a recursion
for the probability that a given habitat patch is occupied. This recursion
enables us to clarify the role of landscape dynamics in the survival of a
metapopulation. In particular, we show that landscape dynamics affects the
persistence and equilibrium level of the metapopulation primarily through its
effect on the distribution of a local population's life span.Comment: This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0

Structural and Physical Properties of CaFe4As3 Single Crystals
We report the synthesis, and structural and physical properties of CaFe4As3
single crystals. Needle-like single crystals of CaFe4As3 were grown out of Sn
flux and the compound adopts an orthorhombic structure as determined by X-ray
diffraction measurements. Electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties indicate
that the system undergoes two successive phase transitions occurring at TN1 ~
90 K and TN2 ~ 26 K. At TN1, electrical resistivities (\rho(b) and \rho(ac))
are enhanced while magnetic susceptibilities (\chi(b) and \chi(ac)) are reduced
in both directions parallel and perpendicular to the b-axis, consistent with
the scenario of antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave formation. At TN2, specific
heat reveals a slope change, and \chi(ac) decreases sharply but \chi(b) has a
clear jump before it decreases again with decreasing temperature. Remarkably,
both \rho(b) and \rho(ac) decrease sharply with thermal hysteresis, indicating
the first-order nature of the phase transition at TN2. At low temperatures,
\rho(b) and \rho(ac) can be described by {\rho} = {\rho}0 + AT^\alpha ({\rho}0,
A, and {\alpha} are constants). Interestingly, these constants vary with
applied magnetic field. The ground state of CaFe4As3 is discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, Submitted to Physical Review
Facile O-atom insertion into C-C and C-H bonds by a trinuclear copper complex designed to harness a singlet oxene
Two trinuclear copper [CuICuICuI(L)]1+ complexes have been prepared with the multidentate ligands (L) 3,3'-(1,4-diazepane-1,4-diyl)bis(1-((2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)(methyl)amino)propan-2-ol) (7-Me) and (3,3'-(1,4-diazepane-1,4-diyl)bis(1-((2-(diethylamino) ethyl)(ethyl) amino)propan-2-ol) (7-Et) as models for the active site of the particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO). The ligands were designed to form the proper spatial and electronic geometry to harness a "singlet oxene," according to the mechanism previously suggested by our laboratory. Consistent with the design strategy, both [CuICuICuI(L)]1+ reacted with dioxygen to form a putative bis(µ3-oxo)CuIICuIICuIII species, capable of facile O-atom insertion across the central C-C bond of benzil and 2,3-butanedione at ambient temperature and pressure. These complexes also catalyze facile O-atom transfer to the C-H bond of CH3CN to form glycolonitrile. These results, together with our recent biochemical studies on pMMO, provide support for our hypothesis that the hydroxylation site of pMMO contains a trinuclear copper cluster that mediates C-H bond activation by a singlet oxene mechanism
Comment on `Series expansions from the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method: the hard-squares model'
Earlier this year Chan extended the low-density series for the hard-squares
partition function to 92 terms. Here we analyse this extended
series focusing on the behaviour at the dominant singularity which lies
on on the negative fugacity axis. We find that the series has a confluent
singularity of order 2 at with exponents and
. We thus confirm that the exponent has the exact
value as observed by Dhar.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, IoP macros. Expanded second and final versio
The Casimir force on a surface with shallow nanoscale corrugations: Geometry and finite conductivity effects
We measure the Casimir force between a gold sphere and a silicon plate with
nanoscale, rectangular corrugations with depth comparable to the separation
between the surfaces. In the proximity force approximation (PFA), both the top
and bottom surfaces of the corrugations contribute to the force, leading to a
distance dependence that is distinct from a flat surface. The measured Casimir
force is found to deviate from the PFA by up to 15%, in good agreement with
calculations based on scattering theory that includes both geometry effects and
the optical properties of the material
Energetic Components of Cooperative Protein Folding
A new lattice protein model with a four-helix bundle ground state is analyzed
by a parameter-space Monte Carlo histogram technique to evaluate the effects of
an extensive variety of model potentials on folding thermodynamics. Cooperative
helical formation and contact energies based on a 5-letter alphabet are found
to be insufficient to satisfy calorimetric and other experimental criteria for
two-state folding. Such proteinlike behaviors are predicted, however, by models
with polypeptide-like local conformational restrictions and
environment-dependent hydrogen bonding-like interactions.Comment: 11 pages, 4 postscripts figures, Phys. Rev. Lett. (in press
Quantum field and uniformly accelerated oscillator
We present an exact treatment of the influences on a quantum scalar field in
its Minkowski vacuum state induced by coupling of the field to a uniformly
accelerated harmonic oscillator. We show that there are no radiation from the
oscillator in the point of view of a uniformly accelerating observer. On the
other hand, there are radiations in the point of view of an inertial observer.
It is shown that Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) like correlations of Rindler
particles in Minkowski vacuum states are modified by a phase factor in front of
the momentum-symmetric Rindler operators. The exact quantization of a
time-dependent oscillator coupled to a massless scalar field was given.Comment: 28 pages, LaTe
Fast and easy blind deblurring using an inverse filter and PROBE
PROBE (Progressive Removal of Blur Residual) is a recursive framework for
blind deblurring. Using the elementary modified inverse filter at its core,
PROBE's experimental performance meets or exceeds the state of the art, both
visually and quantitatively. Remarkably, PROBE lends itself to analysis that
reveals its convergence properties. PROBE is motivated by recent ideas on
progressive blind deblurring, but breaks away from previous research by its
simplicity, speed, performance and potential for analysis. PROBE is neither a
functional minimization approach, nor an open-loop sequential method (blur
kernel estimation followed by non-blind deblurring). PROBE is a feedback
scheme, deriving its unique strength from the closed-loop architecture rather
than from the accuracy of its algorithmic components
Thermoelectric Properties of Intermetallic Semiconducting RuIn3 and Metallic IrIn3
Low temperature (<400 K) thermoelectric properties of semiconducting RuIn3
and metallic IrIn3 are reported. RuIn3 is a narrow band gap semiconductor with
a large n-type Seebeck coefficient at room temperature (S(290K)~400 {\mu}V/K),
but the thermoelectric Figure of merit (ZT(290K) = 0.007) is small because of
high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity ({\kappa}(290 K) ~ 2.0 W/m
K). IrIn3 is a metal with low thermopower at room temperature (S(290K)~20
{\mu}V/K) . Iridium substitution on the ruthenium site has a dramatic effect on
transport properties, which leads to a large improvement in the power factor
and corresponding Figure of merit (ZT(380 K) = 0.053), improving the efficiency
of the material by an over of magnitude.Comment: Submitted to JA
