Continuous volumetric imaging via an optical phase-locked ultrasound lens
In vivo imaging at high spatiotemporal resolution is key to the understanding of complex biological systems. We integrated an optical phase-locked ultrasound lens into a two-photon fluorescence microscope and achieved microsecond-scale axial scanning, thus enabling volumetric imaging at tens of hertz. We applied this system to multicolor volumetric imaging of processes sensitive to motion artifacts, including calcium dynamics in behaving mouse brain and transient morphology changes and trafficking of immune cells
A Detailed Analysis of One-loop Neutrino Masses from the Generic Supersymmetric Standard Model
In the generic supersymmetric standard model which had no global symmetry
enforced by hand, lepton number violation is a natural consequence.
Supersymmetry, hence, can be considered the source of experimentally demanded
beyond standard model properties for the neutrinos. With an efficient
formulation of the model, we perform a comprehensive detailed analysis of all

Discovery of an unidentified Fermi object as a black widow-like millisecond pulsar
The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has revolutionized our knowledge of the
gamma-ray pulsar population, leading to the discovery of almost 100 gamma-ray
pulsars and dozens of gamma-ray millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Although the
outer-gap model predicts different sites of emission for the radio and
gamma-ray pulsars, until now all of the known gamma-ray MSPs have been visible
in the radio. Here we report the discovery of a "radio-quiet" gamma-ray
emitting MSP candidate by using Fermi, Chandra, Swift, and optical
observations. The X-ray and gamma-ray properties of the source are consistent
with known gamma-ray pulsars. We also found a 4.63-hr orbital period in optical
and X-ray data. We suggest that the source is a black widow-like MSP with a
~0.1 solar-mass late-type companion star. Based on the profile of the optical
and X-ray light-curves, the companion star is believed to be heated by the
pulsar while the X-ray emissions originate from pulsar magnetosphere and/or
from intra-binary shock. No radio detection of the source has been reported yet
and although no gamma-ray/radio pulsation has been found, we estimated that the
spin period of the MSP is ~3-5 ms based on the inferred gamma-ray luminosity.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ
One-loop Neutron Electric Dipole Moment from Supersymmetry without R-parity
We present a detailed analysis together with exact numerical calculations on
one-loop contributions to neutron electric dipole moment from supersymmetry
without R-parity, focusing on the gluino, chargino, and neutralino
contributions. Apart from the neglected family mixing among quarks, complete
formulae are given for the various contributions, through the quark dipole
operators, to which the present study is restricted. We discuss the structure
and main features of the R-parity violating contributions and the interplay
between the R-parity conserving and violating parameters. In particular, the
parameter combination , under the optimal
parametrization adopted, is shown to be solely responsible for the R-parity
violating contributions in the supersymmetric loop diagrams. While
could bear a complex phase, the latter is not

'Parasitic invasions' or sources of good governance: constraining foreign competition in Hong Kong banking, 1956-81
This paper investigates the operation and impact of the moratorium on new banking licences imposed in Hong Kong in 1965 and the claims that foreign banks destabilised the banking system and drained resources from the colony. First it examines foreign banks' attempts to circumvent the moratorium through claims of special circumstances and buying interests in local banks, and secondly it examines the efforts of incumbents to extend barriers to non-bank financial institutions and to branches of foreign banks. The general conclusions are that while the moratorium was aimed at increasing the stability of the banking system, it had the effect of decreasing the regulatory breadth of the government, and reducing incentives for mergers and acquisitions that might have improved governance
Performance and modeling of superconducting ring resonators at millimeter-wave frequencies
Microstrip ring resonators operating at 35 GHz were fabricated from laser ablated YBCO thin films deposited on lanthanum aluminate substrates. They were measured over a range of temperatures and their performance compared to identical resonators made of evaporated gold. Below 60 Kelvin the superconducting strip performed better than the gold, reaching an unloaded Q approximately 1.5 times that of gold at 25 K. A shift in the resonant frequency follows the form predicted by the London equations. The Phenomenological Loss Equivalence Method is applied to the ring resonator and the theoretically calculated Q values are compared to the experimental results
Specific heat of MgB in a one- and a two-band model from first-principles calculations
The heat capacity anomaly at the transition to superconductivity of the
layered superconductor MgB is compared to first-principles calculations
with the Coulomb repulsion, , as the only parameter which is fixed to
give the measured . We solve the Eliashberg equations for both an
isotropic one-band and a two-band model with different superconducting gaps on
the and Fermi surfaces. The agreement with experiments is
considerably better for the two-band model than for the one-band model.Comment: final published versio
Discovery of gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant Kes 17 with Fermi Large Area Telescope
We report the discovery of GeV emission at the position of supernova remnant
Kes 17 by using the data from the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi
Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Kes 17 can be clearly detected with a significance
of ~12 sigma in the 1 - 20 GeV range. Moreover, a number of gamma-ray sources
were detected in its vicinity. The gamma-ray spectrum of Kes 17 can be well
described by a simple power-law with a photon index of ~ 2.4. Together with the
multi-wavelength evidence for its interactions with the nearby molecular cloud,
the gamma-ray detection suggests that Kes 17 is a candidate acceleration site
