    Solvent free model for self-assembling fluid bilayer membranes: Stabilization of the fluid phase based on broad attractive tail potentials

    We present a simple and highly adaptable method for simulating coarse-grained lipid membranes without explicit solvent. Lipids are represented by one head-bead and two tail-beads, with the interaction between tails being of key importance in stabilizing the fluid phase. Two such tail-tail potentials were tested, with the important feature in both cases being a variable range of attraction. We examined phase diagrams of this range versus temperature for both functional forms of the tail-tail attraction and found that a certain threshold attractive width was required to stabilize the fluid phase. Within the fluid phase region we find that material properties such as area per lipid, orientational order, diffusion constant, inter-leaflet flip-flop rate and bilayer stiffness all depend strongly and monotonically on the attractive width. For three particular values of the potential width we investigate the transition between gel and fluid phases via heating or cooling and find that this transition is discontinuous with considerable hysteresis. We also investigated the stretching of a bilayer to eventually form a pore and found excellent agreement with a recently published analytic theory.Comment: 14 pages 12 figure

    Reduced healthcare utilisation following successful HCV treatment in HIV co-infected patients with mild liver disease

    New direct-acting antivirals (DAA) for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection have achieved high cure rates in many patient groups previously considered difficult-to-treat, including those HIV/HCV co-infected. The high price of these medications is likely to limit access to treatment, at least in the short term. Early treatment priority is likely to be given to those with advanced disease, but a more detailed understanding of the potential benefits in treating those with mild disease is needed. We hypothesized that successful HCV treatment within a co-infected population with mild liver disease would lead to a reduction in the use and costs of healthcare services in the 5 years following treatment completion. We performed a retrospective cohort study of HIV/HCV-co-infected patients without evidence of fibrosis/cirrhosis who received a course of HCV therapy between 2004 and 2013. Detailed analysis of healthcare utilization up to 5 years following treatment for each patient using clinical and electronic records was used to estimate healthcare costs. Sixty-three patients were investigated, of whom 48 of 63 (76.2%) achieved sustained virological response 12 weeks following completion of therapy (SVR12). Individuals achieving SVR12 incurred lower health utilization costs (£5000 per-patient) compared to (£10 775 per-patient) non-SVR patients in the 5 years after treatment. Healthcare utilization rates and costs in the immediate 5 years following treatment were significantly higher in co-infected patients with mild disease that failed to achieve SVR12. These data suggest additional value to achieving cure beyond the prevention of complications of disease

    The design and operation of a field emission array (FEA) cathode and the subsequent demonstration of the first FEA gyrotron are presented. Up to 10 mA from 30 000 tips was achieved reproducibly from each of ten chips in a gyrotron environment, namely, a vacuum 1 x 10(-8) mbar, -50 kV potential with multiple chip operation, The design parameters of the FEA gun were similar to those of a magnetron injection gun with an achievable electron beam current of 50-100 mA and measured power 720 W cw. Coherent microwave radiation was detected in both TE(02) at 30.1 GHz and TE(03) at 43.6 GHz, with a starting current of 1 mA

    Dust Production of Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner Using Broadband Photometry

    Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner is a Jupiter family comet, approximately 2 km in diameter, and is established to be the parent of the Draconids, a meteor shower known to outburst. In 1933 and 1946 up to 10,000 meteors per hour were reported for the Draconids, and 2011 saw a minor Draconid outburst. Meteor stream modeling/forecasting being a primary focus for the NASA Meteoroid Environment Office, it was decided to monitor 21P for three purposes: firstly to find the apparent and absolute magnitude with respect to heliocentric distance; second to calculate Af , a quantity that describes the dust production rate and is used in models to predict the activity of the Draconids; and thirdly to detect possible increases in cometary activity, which could correspond to future Draconid meteor outbursts. A similar study was done for 21P during its 2004-2006 close approach to the Sun in which apparent and absolute magnitudes were found with various heliocentric distances, as well as the dust production. At 2.32 AU from the Sun, 21P possessed an apparent magnitude of 17.05 and Af of 83 cm, and an apparent magnitude of 15.91 and Af of 130.66 cm at 1.76 AU from the sun

    The parent of the Geminids, 3200 Phaethon, is a unique body in that it is classified as an asteroid, however is responsible for one of the most prolific meteor showers of the year and has shown comet-like behavior in its past (Jewitt and Li 2010). The Geminid meteor shower is also anomalous as its rates have been increasing since it was first detected. Understanding the composition and properties of meteoroids that belong to this meteor shower is an important area of study and of interest to both theoreticians and experimentalists. Using the light curve and decelerations of ten double-station Geminids as seen in the Meteoroid Environment Office's widefield meteor cameras, densities were able to be approximated using a model of meteoroid ablation by Campbell-Brown et al (2013) which employs thermal disruption to model the release of grains during ablation. Bulk densities of Geminids give unique insight into the composition of Phaethon that would only be derived by going to the asteroid itself. The bulk densities of these ten Geminids were found to be between 2.6 and 3.0 g/cm(3), supporting results from Babadzhanov (2009) and Borovicka et al (2010) which prove Phaethon has a much lower porosity than most other meteor shower parents. NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office established these two wide-field meteor cameras to observe meteors in the milligram-mass-range. Each camera consists of a 17 mm focal length Schneider lens (f/0.95) on a Watec 902U2 Ultimate CCD video camera, producing a 21.7x15.5 degree field-of-view. This configuration sees meteors down to a magnitude of +6. Data from these cameras are currently being used to calculate daily automated meteor fluxes. On the first night of operation, December 13-14, 2012, 18 double-station and 53 unique single-station Geminids were detected. The Geminid flux results from this system will be presented as well as ZHR's over the peak of the Geminids. The average flux density over the night was 0.058, 0.052, and 0.062 meteors/km(2)/hour down to a limiting magnitude of +6.5, for the double-station results and each single-station's results. This equates to ZHR's of 113, 102, and 122 respectively. Included in the flux algorithm is a process to find the collecting area per height and a method to find the limiting meteor magnitude per 10 minute time period
