Transformation, theology and the public university in South Africa

    Get PDF
This article addresses a specific issue, namely the ramifications for theology practised at a public university under (post)-apartheid conditions. In South Africa, scholarly opinion has not paid sufficient attention to what “transformation” entails for theology under these circumstances. The article describes transformation in detail by clarifying the main referents for this notion and attending to discourses in higher education. Heuristic categories such as inclusivity, alterity, critique, freedom and flourishing are identified that should inform multi-level and comprehensive embodiment in terms of knowledge, people and practices. The article identifies several critical issues such as the plurality of intellectual traditions and identity formation that should be explored in more detail. It also emphasises the distinctive theological task of theology at a public university – the articulation of transcendence and the construal of a non-naturalistic symbolic interpretation of reality

CONSIDERING THE DOCTRINE OF GOD: FRAGMENTS ON TRINITY, DISCOURSES, AND TIME

    Get PDF
At the heart of the Christian faith is a particular understanding of God, and the task of theology is to give an account of that vision under specific historical conditions. That is the challenge, burden, and privilege of theology. This research focuses on how that assignment is undertaken in contemporary Systematic Theology and proposes, in a modest manner, a specific direction for the development of a doctrine of God

Roeping en opleiding in 'n spesifieke konteks: vyf trinitariese stellinge oor motivering en oriëntasie

The article endeavours to discuss, from a theological point of view, continuing theological education, and proposes that a consistently trinitarian approach will address crucial aspects relating to further education for ministers. The argument is developed in the form of five statements. It is argued that a trinitarian perspective responds to the need for a focus on theological education and motivates the practice of continuous training. A study of the contemporary context is required by trinitarian faith which also informs matters of basic orientation and content.Acta Theologica Vol. 2 2007: pp. 205-22

Trinitariese verbeelding en post-apartheid Suider-Afrika: fragmente oor dogmatisering en dosering

    Get PDF
A proposal is made about the teaching of Dogmatics in Southern Africa. An alternative teaching practice is required by the radical social, intellectual and theo-ecclesial changes. New sentiments have emerged which contributed to a change in the conception of the dogmatological task. The dogmatician linguistically constructs a symbolic universe that exerts an ethical impact. The notion of a “trinitarian imagination” is espoused to articulate the entire Christian vision from the reality of God’s trinitarian identity. The existence of possible challenges to such a proposal is acknowledged. When applied to the classroom it implies that students should be mentored to acquire the skill oftrinitarian rhetoric; that the selection of study material has become  tremendously problematic; and finally, that learning should become much more experimental. The conviction is expressed that such a trinitarian orientation could contribute in a positive way to the Southern Africa context

God images, ethical effects and the responsibility of Systematic Theology

    Get PDF
This article registers an important shift that is occurring in contemporary theistic reflection: greater sensitivity to the function of God images, and the consequent ethical impacts. Three texts by Gunton, Johnson and McFague are discussed that exemplify this focus in an emphatic way. From this treatment the implications for Systematic Theology crystallise clearly. The rest of the article entails an exploration of the dynamics of the causal relationship between a specific God image and its corresponding effect. The ramifications for the task and responsibility of Systematic Theology are identified and inconclusion some normative guidelines are suggested

An investigation of the entrepreneurial orientation, context and entrepreneurial performance of inner-city Johannesburg street traders

    Get PDF
3Increasingly, attention is being paid to the entrepreneurial potential of the informal sector, which participants perceive to be rich in opportunity. Yet, little has been done to investigate the entrepreneurial orientation, and indeed, the contribution of entrepreneurial orientation to the entrepreneurial performance of informal traders. Entrepreneurial orientation (EO) is particularly useful because it contributes to a fundamental understanding of what entrepreneurship is. The focus of this study is an examination of the EO of inner city traders in the City of Johannesburg, South Africa. Data relating to EO, contextual factors and entrepreneurial performance were collected from 308 street traders and analysed to investigate, fi rstly, the factors that shape EO, and secondly, the potential contribution of EO to entrepreneurial performance. Thefi ndings indicate that EO is associated with certain contextual andlearning factors, suggesting that the provision of entrepreneurial training might contribute to the empowerment of informal entrepreneurs. At the same time, higher levels of proactiveness and competitive aggressiveness were found to be positively associated with continuance satisfaction

“Eat dry beans, split peas, lentils and soya regularly”: A food-based dietary guideline

The objective of this paper is to review recent scientific evidence to support the food-based dietary guideline (FBDG): “Eat dry beans, split peas, lentils and soya regularly”. In this review, legumes are synonymous with the term “pulses”, while soy beans are classified as “oilseeds”. The FBDG was originally introduced to address both under- and overnutrition in SouthAfrica. The nutrient and non-nutrient content, results of recent  epidemiological and intervention studies on health effects, recommended intakes and barriers to consumption are briefly reviewed. Legumes are rich and economical sources of good-quality protein, slow-release  carbohydrates, dietary fibre (non-starch polysaccharides), various vitamins and minerals and non-nutritive components which may have several beneficial health effects. Pulses have a low energy, fat and sodium content. Therefore, legumes contribute to dietary adequacy, while protecting against noncommunicable diseases through many mechanisms. Evidence is presented that concerns about excessive flatulence from eating beans may be exaggerated, and that there is individual variation in response to different bean types. It is recommended that nutritionists should aggressively encourage consumers to consume more legumes. They should also be advised to evaluate different legume varieties to minimise undesirable symptoms. More research is needed to assess gastrointestinal responses between types of available and consumed legumes in South Africa. The FBDG should be tested in different population groups to determine how to maintain legumes as a traditional food. Increasing familiarity with legumes could help to increase the likelihood that they may be incorporated more regularly into the diet

Testing and Evaluating The Harmonised Digital Forensic Investigation Process in Post Mortem Digital Investigation

    Get PDF
Existing digital forensic investigation process models have provided guidelines for identifying and preserving potential digital evidence captured from a crime scene. However, for any of the digital forensic investigation process models developed across the world to be adopted and fully applied by the scientific community, it has to be tested. For this reason, the Harmonized Digital Forensic Investigation Process (HDFIP) model, currently a working draft towards becoming an international standard for digital forensic investigations (ISO/IEC 27043), needs to be tested. This paper, therefore, presents the findings of a case study used to test the HDFIP model implemented in the ISO/IEC 27043 draft standard. The testing and evaluation process uses an anonymised real-life case to test each subprocess (grouped in classes) of the HDFIP model to show that it maintains a structured and precise logical flow that aims to provide acceptance, reliability, usability, and flexibility. The case study used also helps to analyse the effectiveness of the HDFIP model to ensure that the principles of validity and admissibility are fulfilled. A process with these properties would reduce the disparities within the field of digital forensic investigations and achieve global acceptance and standardization.
