    Indirect reciprocity and the evolution of “moral signals”

    Signals regarding the behavior of others are an essential element of human moral systems and there are important evolutionary connections between language and large-scale cooperation. In particular, social communication may be required for the reputation tracking needed to stabilize indirect reciprocity. Additionally, scholars have suggested that the benefits of indirect reciprocity may have been important for the evolution of language and that social signals may have coevolved with large-scale cooperation. This paper investigates the possibility of such a coevolution. Using the tools of evolutionary game theory, we present a model that incorporates primitive “moral signaling” into a simple setting of indirect reciprocity. This model reveals some potential difficulties for the evolution of “moral signals.” We find that it is possible for “moral signals” to evolve alongside indirect reciprocity, but without some external pressure aiding the evolution of a signaling system, such a coevolution is unlikely

    Microchannel cooling for the LHCb VELO Upgrade I

    The LHCb VELO Upgrade I, currently being installed for the 2022 start of LHC Run 3, uses silicon microchannel coolers with internally circulating bi-phase \cotwo for thermal control of hybrid pixel modules operating in vacuum. This is the largest scale application of this technology to date. Production of the microchannel coolers was completed in July 2019 and the assembly into cooling structures was completed in September 2021. This paper describes the R\&D path supporting the microchannel production and assembly and the motivation for the design choices. The microchannel coolers have excellent thermal peformance, low and uniform mass, no thermal expansion mismatch with the ASICs and are radiation hard.     Observation of the Decay Λ0b→Λ+cÏ„âˆ’ÂŻÎœ

    The first observation of the semileptonic b-baryon decay Λb0→Λc+τ-ÎœÂŻÏ„, with a significance of 6.1σ, is reported using a data sample corresponding to 3 fb-1 of integrated luminosity, collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV at the LHC. The τ- lepton is reconstructed in the hadronic decay to three charged pions. The ratio K=B(Λb0→Λc+τ-ÎœÂŻÏ„)/B(Λb0→Λc+π-π+π-) is measured to be 2.46±0.27±0.40, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The branching fraction B(Λb0→Λc+τ-ÎœÂŻÏ„)=(1.50±0.16±0.25±0.23)% is obtained, where the third uncertainty is from the external branching fraction of the normalization channel Λb0→Λc+π-π+π-. The ratio of semileptonic branching fractions R(Λc+)B(Λb0→Λc+τ-ÎœÂŻÏ„)/B(Λb0→Λc+ÎŒ-ÎœÂŻÎŒ) is derived to be 0.242±0.026±0.040±0.059, where the external branching fraction uncertainty from the channel Λb0→Λc+ÎŒ-ÎœÂŻÎŒ contributes to the last term. This result is in agreement with the standard model prediction

    A study of CP violation in the decays B±→[K+K-π+π-]Dh± (h= K, π) and B±→[π+π-π+π-]Dh±

    The first study of CP violation in the decay mode B±→[K+K-π+π-]Dh± , with h= K, π , is presented, exploiting a data sample of proton–proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 \,fb - 1 . The analysis is performed in bins of phase space, which are optimised for sensitivity to local CP asymmetries. CP -violating observables that are sensitive to the angle Îł of the Unitarity Triangle are determined. The analysis requires external information on charm-decay parameters, which are currently taken from an amplitude analysis of LHCb data, but can be updated in the future when direct measurements become available. Measurements are also performed of phase-space integrated observables for B±→[K+K-π+π-]Dh± and B±→[π+π-π+π-]Dh± decays

    Measurement of τL using the Bs0 →J/ψη decay mode

    Using a proton–proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7fb-1 , the lifetime of the light Bs0 mass eigenstate, τL , is measured using the Bs0→J/ψη decay mode to be τL=1.445±0.016(stat)±0.008(syst)ps. A combination of this result with a previous LHCb analysis using an independent dataset corresponding to 3 fb - 1 of integrated luminosity gives τL=1.452±0.014±0.007±0.002ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second due to the uncorrelated part of the systematic uncertainty and the third due to the correlated part of the systematic uncertainty

    Measurement of antiproton production from antihyperon decays in pHe collisions at √sNN=110GeV

    The interpretation of cosmic antiproton flux measurements from space-borne experiments is currently limited by the knowledge of the antiproton production cross-section in collisions between primary cosmic rays and the interstellar medium. Using collisions of protons with an energy of 6.5 TeV incident on helium nuclei at rest in the proximity of the interaction region of the LHCb experiment, the ratio of antiprotons originating from antihyperon decays to prompt production is measured for antiproton momenta between 12 and 110GeV\!/c . The dominant antihyperon contribution, namely Λ¯ → pÂŻ π+ decays from promptly produced Λ¯ particles, is also exclusively measured. The results complement the measurement of prompt antiproton production obtained from the same data sample. At the energy scale of this measurement, the antihyperon contributions to antiproton production are observed to be significantly larger than predictions of commonly used hadronic production models

    Observation of the doubly charmed baryon decay Ξcc++→Ξcâ€Č+π+

    The Ξcc++→Ξcâ€Č+π+ decay is observed using proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1. The Ξcc++→Ξcâ€Č+π+ decay is reconstructed partially, where the photon from the Ξcâ€Č+→Ξc+Îł decay is not reconstructed and the pK−π+ final state of the Ξc+ baryon is employed. The Ξcc++→Ξcâ€Č+π+branching fraction relative to that of the Ξcc++→Ξc+π+ decay is measured to be 1.41 ± 0.17 ± 0.10, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.     Study of charmonium and charmonium-like contributions in B+ → J/ψηK+ decays

    A study of B+→ J/ψηK+ decays, followed by J/ψ → ÎŒ+Ό− and η → γγ, is performed using a dataset collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. The J/ψη mass spectrum is investigated for contributions from charmonia and charmonium-like states. Evidence is found for the B+→ (ψ2(3823) → J/ψη)K+ and B+→ (ψ(4040) → J/ψη)K+ decays with significance of 3.4 and 4.7 standard deviations, respectively. This constitutes the first evidence for the ψ2(3823) → J/ψη decay

    Studies of η\eta and ηâ€Č\eta' production in pppp and ppPb collisions

    The production of η\eta and ηâ€Č\eta' mesons is studied in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions collected with the LHCb detector. Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of 5.025.02 and 13 TeV13~{\rm TeV}, and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16 TeV8.16~{\rm TeV}. The studies are performed in center-of-mass rapidity regions 2.5<yc.m.<3.52.5<y_{\rm c.m.}<3.5 (forward rapidity) and −4.0<yc.m.<−3.0-4.0<y_{\rm c.m.}<-3.0 (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The η\eta and ηâ€Č\eta' production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for 1.5<pT<10 GeV1.5<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV} and 3<pT<10 GeV3<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV}, respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for η\eta and ηâ€Č\eta' mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of η\eta mesons are also used to calculate η/π0\eta/\pi^0 cross section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average.
