Endowment Effects in Contests

We design an experiment to test if the manner in which subjects receive the endowment has any bearing on the amount of overbidding in contests. We find that overbidding is significantly higher when subjects are given a large per-experiment endowment rather than when the endowment is given per-period. The Attack-and-Defense Group Contests: Best-shot versus Weakest-link

This study analyzes a group contest in which one group (defenders) follows a weakest-link whereas the other group (attackers) follows a best-shot impact function. We fully characterize the Nash and coalition-proof equilibria and show that with symmetric valuation the coalition-proof equilibrium is unique up to the permutation of the identity of the active player in the attacker group. With asymmetric valuation it is always an equilibrium for one of the highest valuation players to be active; it may also be the case that the highest valuation players in the attacker group free-ride completely on a group-member with a lower valuation. However, in any equilibrium, only one player in the attacker group is active, whereas all the players in the defender group are active and exert the same effort. Endowment Origin, Demographic Effects and Individual Preferences in Contests

In modern firms the use of contests as an incentive device is ubiquitous. Nonetheless, recent experimental research shows that in the laboratory subjects routinely make suboptimal decisions in contests even to the extent of making negative returns. The purpose of this study is to investigate if changing how agents are endowed with resources can increase the efficiency in contests. To this end, we conduct a laboratory experiment in which subjects are asked to allot costly resources (bids) in an effort to attain an award (prize). In line with other laboratory studies of contests, our results show that subjects overbid relative to theoretical predictions and incur substantial losses as a result. Making subjects earn their initial resource endowments mitigates the amount of overbidding and thus increases overall efficiency. Overbidding is also linked to gender with women bidding higher than men and having lower average earnings. Other demographic information such as religiosity and individual preferences towards winning and risk also contribute to excessive bidding

Strategically Equivalent Contests

Using a two-player Tullock-type contest, we show that intuitively and structurally different contests can be strategically equivalent. Strategically equivalent contests generate the same best response functions and, as a result, the same equilibrium efforts. However, strategically equivalent contests may yield different equilibrium payoffs. We propose a simple two-step procedure to identify strategically equivalent contests. Using this procedure, we identify contests that are strategically equivalent to the original Tullock contest, and provide new examples of strategically equivalent contests. Finally, we discuss possible contest design applications and avenues for future theoretical and empirical research

An Experimental Investigation of Colonel Blotto Games

"This article examines behavior in the two-player, constant-sum Colonel Blotto game with asymmetric resources in which players maximize the expected number of battlefields won. The experimental results support all major theoretical predictions. In the auction treatment, where winning a battlefield is deterministic, disadvantaged players use a 'guerilla warfare' strategy which stochastically allocates zero resources to a subset of battlefields. Advantaged players employ a 'stochastic complete coverage' strategy, allocating random, but positive, resource levels across the battlefields. In the lottery treatment, where winning a battlefield is probabilistic, both players divide their resources equally across all battlefields." A generalized Tullock contest

We construct a generalized Tullock contest under complete information where contingent upon winning or losing, the payoff of a player is a linear function of prizes, own effort, and the effort of the rival. This structure nests a number of existing contests in the literature and can be used to analyze new types of contests. We characterize the unique symmetric equilibrium and show that small parameter modifications may lead to substantially different types of contests and hence different equilibrium effort levels

Висвітлено зарубіжний механізм кримінально-правового захисту дітей Швейцарії, Іспанії, Білорусії, Росії та Казахстану, проаналізовано кримінальне законодавство цих країн на предмет подібності побудови і конструкції норми, що передбачає відповідальність за порушення охорони життя та здоров’я дітей, у контексті вітчизняного кримінального законодавства.The process of legislation’s formation lasts rather long period of time. The state sets, coordinates, changes and terminates legal rules that must guarantee appropriate social, economic and democratic development of the state and society. Criminal legislation of Ukraine provides criminal liability for improper performance of duties to protect children’s life and health that is essentially a mechanism of criminal and legal protection of a child from illegal socially dangerous actions of responsible persons. But there is a question how effective criminal liability for improper performance of duties to protect children’s life and health is regulated in Ukraine in the context of foreign legislation. Comparative analysis of the regulation of criminal liability for improper performance of duties to protect children’s life and health has been conducted in various aspects, namely in the works of O.M. Vedernikov, A.V. Savchenko, I.D. Kozochkin, O.O. Malinovskyi, M.I. Khavroniuk, I.V. Khokhlova, O.P. Shemiakov and others. The objective is to study foreign experience of regulating criminally liability for improper performance of duties to protect children’s life and health aiming at its possible implementation into current criminal legislation of Ukraine. Analysis of the sources of criminal legislation of foreign countries that have criminal liability for violations of the rights to life and health of children as a result of failure or improper performance of duties is conducted. The main types of legal families are determined and the states within each type are singled out. Special attention is paid to highlighting the features and characteristics of the criminal law of Roman and Germanic legal system. The criminal and legal protection of minors’ rights in the domestic mechanism of protecting children and the relevant legal rules of international legal acts as well as international standards in the sphere of children rights’ protection are analyzed. Foreign mechanism of criminal and legal protection of children in Switzerland, Spain, Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan is highlighted; criminal legislation of these countries in terms of similarity of construction of the rule, which involves liability for the protection of children’s life and health in the context of domestic criminal law, is analyzed. Analysis of criminal and legal protection of minors rights’ protection, made it possible to state that national mechanism of protecting children and the relevant legal standards aligned with the international regulations and international standards. Besides, the rules of domestic criminal legislation directed on the protection of minors’ life and health from improper performance of duties in the comparative analysis with foreign ones are more sophisticated, their construction is legally competent, and their limits are clearly defined.Проведён анализ источников уголовного законодательства зарубежных государств, которыми предусмотрена уголовная ответственность за нарушения прав на жизнь и здоровье детей вследствие неисполнения или ненадлежащего исполнения обязанностей. Определены основные типы правовых семей и выделены государства, относящиеся к каждому типу. Уделено внимание освещению признаков и особенностей уголовного законодательства романо-германской правовой системы. Проанализирована уголовно-правовая защита прав несовершеннолетних в отечественном механизме защиты детей и соответствующие международные нормативно-правовые акты, а также международные стандарты в данной сфере. Освещен зарубежный механизм уголовно-правовой защиты детей Швейцарии, Испании, Белоруссии, России и Казахстана, проанализировано уголовное законодательство этих стран на предмет сходства построения и конструкции нормы, предусматривающей ответственность за нарушение охраны жизни и здоровья детей, в контексте отечественного уголовного законодательства
