Does eye examination order for standard automated perimetry matter?
PURPOSE: In spite of faster examination procedures, visual field (VF) results are potentially influenced by fatigue. We use large-scale VF data collected from clinics to test the hypothesis that perimetric fatigue effects are greater in the eye examined second. METHODS: Series of six Humphrey Swedish Interactive Testing Algorithm (SITA) VFs from 6901 patients were retrospectively extracted from a VF database from four different glaucoma clinics. Mean deviation (MD) was compared between first and second tested eyes. A surrogate measure of longitudinal MD variability over time was estimated from errors using linear regression of MD against time then compared between first and second tested eye. RESULTS: Right eye VF was tested consistently first throughout in 6320 (91.6%) patients. Median (interquartile range; IQR) MD in the first tested (right) eye and second tested (left) eye was -2.57 (-6.15, -0.58) dB and -2.70 (-6.34, -0.80) dB respectively (median reduction VF sensitivity of 0.13 dB; p < 0.001). Median (IQR) increase in our surrogate measure of longitudinal MD variability in the second eye tested was 3% (-43%, 50%); this effect was not associated with patient age or rest time between examinations. CONCLUSION: Statistically significant perimetric fatigue effects manifest on average in the second eye tested in routine clinics using Humphrey Field Analyzer SITA examinations. However, the average effects were very small and there was enormous variation among patients. We recommend starting with a right eye examination so that any perimetric fatigue effects, if they exist in an individual, will be as constant as possible from visit to visit
In-trail dynamics of multiple CDTI-equipped aircraft queues
One of the potential problems of in-trail self-spacing with a Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) is whether dynamic oscillations would occur in a queue of aircraft flying an approach, similar to the ""accordion'' effect seem with the queue of automobiles in stop-and-go traffic. In order to gain some insight into this potential problem, a brief experiment was conducted with the Transport Systems Research Vehicle (TSRV) ground-based simulator equipped with CDTI which presented the position of other aircraft in the area. Three simulation sessions were conducted wherein queues of up to nine aircraft were built, each one self-spacing on the preceding aircraft. The aircraft crews were rotated to ensure that the pilots had no prior knowledge of the lead aircraft behavior they would be following. Two different spacing criteria were employed: a constant time predictor criterion and a constant time delay criterion. The experiment failed to uncover any dynamic oscillatory tendencies in queues of seven to nine aircraft
Sustainable deathstyles? The geography of green burials in Britain
In the context of a wider literature on ‘deathscapes’, we map the emergence of a new mode of burial and remembrance in Britain. Since a ‘green’ burial ground was established in Carlisle in 1993, sites for so-called ‘green, ‘natural’ or ‘woodland’ funerals have proliferated. There are now over 270 such sites in Britain. Drawing on a postal and email survey sent to all managers/owners and visits to 15 green burial grounds (enabling observations and semi-structured interviews with their managers), we chart their growth, establishment and regulation and describe the landscapes associated with them. Impact of Home Field Advantage: Analyzed Across Three Professional Sports
We examined the impact of home-field advantage in the NFL, NBA, and MLB. We defined home-field advantage as winning more than 50% of the home games. Additionally, we took into consideration how season length could act as a moderator and influence the impact of home-field advantage. We collected data from the 2015 NBA and MLB seasons and the 2015 and 2016 NFL seasons to determine statistical significance. In total, we got data from 4,141 games to analyze. We found that there is statistical significance that the home team has a better chance of winning than the away team across the NFL, NBA, and MLB. We also found that season length has a significant impact on home team winning percentage
Mapping CS in Starburst Galaxies: Disentangling and Characterising Dense Gas
Aims. We observe the dense gas tracer CS in two nearby starburst galaxies to
determine how the conditions of the dense gas varies across the circumnuclear
regions in starburst galaxies. Methods. Using the IRAM-30m telescope, we mapped
the distribution of the CS(2-1) and CS(3-2) lines in the circumnuclear regions
of the nearby starburst galaxies NGC 3079 and NGC 6946. We also detected the
formaldehyde (H2CO) and methanol (CH3OH) in both galaxies. We marginally detect
the isotopologue C34S. Results. We calculate column densities under LTE
conditions for CS and CH3OH. Using the detections accumulated here to guide our
inputs, we link a time and depth dependent chemical model with a molecular line
radiative transfer model; we reproduce the observations, showing how conditions
where CS is present are likely to vary away from the galactic centres.
Conclusions. Using the rotational diagram method for CH3OH, we obtain a lower
limit temperature of 14 K. In addition to this, by comparing the chemical and
radiative transfer models to observations, we determine the properties of the
dense gas as traced by CS (and CH3OH). We also estimate the quantity of the
dense gas. We find that, provided that there are a between 10^5 and 10^6 dense
cores in our beam, for both target galaxies, emission of CS from warm (T = 100
- 400 K), dense (n(H2) = 10^5-6 cm-3) cores, possibly with a high cosmic ray
ionisation rate (zeta = 100 zeta0) best describes conditions for our central
pointing. In NGC 6946, conditions are generally cooler and/or less dense
further from the centre, whereas in NGC 3079, conditions are more uniform. The
inclusion of shocks allows for more efficient CS formation, leading to an order
of magnitude less dense gas being required to replicate observations in some

Progression from ocular hypertension to visual field loss in the English hospital eye service
Background There are more than one million National Health Service visits in England and Wales each year for patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension (OHT). With the ageing population and an increase in optometric testing, the economic burden of glaucoma-related visits is predicted to increase. We examined the conversion rates of OHT to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in England and assessed factors associated with risk of conversion.
Methods Electronic medical records of 45 309 patients from five regionally different glaucoma clinics in England were retrospectively examined. Conversion to POAG from OHT was defined by deterioration in visual field (two consecutive tests classified as stage 1 or worse as per the glaucoma staging system 2). Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine factors (age, sex, treatment status and baseline intraocular pressure (IOP)) associated with conversion.
Results The cumulative risk of conversion to POAG was 17.5% (95% CI 15.4% to 19.6%) at 5 years. Older age (HR 1.35 per decade, 95% CI 1.22 to 1.50, p<0.001) was associated with a higher risk of conversion. IOP-lowering therapy (HR 0.45, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.57, p<0.001) was associated with a lower risk of conversion. Predicted 5-year conversion rates for treated and untreated groups were 14.0% and 26.9%, respectively.
Conclusion Less than one-fifth of OHT patients managed in glaucoma clinics in the UK converted to POAG over a 5-year period, suggesting many patients may require less intensive follow-up. Our study provides real-world evidence for the efficacy of current management (including IOP-lowering treatment) at reducing risk of conversion
Observation of fine one-dimensionally disordered layers in silicon carbide
The improved resolution of synchrotron edge-topography is enabling thinner (less than 100 microns), silicon carbide crystals to be studied, and is providing a more detailed and wider database on polytype depth profiles. Fine long-period and one-dimensionally-disordered layers, 5-25 microns thick, can now be confidently resolved and are found to be very common features, often in association with high-defect density bands. These features are illustrated in this paper using three examples. A new long period polytype LPP (152H/456R) has been discovered and reported here for the first time
A categorical framework for the quantum harmonic oscillator
This paper describes how the structure of the state space of the quantum
harmonic oscillator can be described by an adjunction of categories, that
encodes the raising and lowering operators into a commutative comonoid. The
formulation is an entirely general one in which Hilbert spaces play no special
role. Generalised coherent states arise through the hom-set isomorphisms
defining the adjunction, and we prove that they are eigenstates of the lowering
operators. Surprisingly, generalised exponentials also emerge naturally in this
setting, and we demonstrate that coherent states are produced by the
exponential of a raising morphism acting on the zero-particle state. Finally,
we examine all of these constructions in a suitable category of Hilbert spaces,
