    Economic Development Strategies in the Dominican Republic

    The paper documents the economic development strategies pursued by the Dominican Republic. The study argues that the country’s success results from the implementation of a three-pronged economic development strategy. The first prong relates to diversifying production and the second to developing special economic zones. These zones operate in parallel fashion to the rest of the economy but with protections from domestic impediments to growth and progress. The third item in the recipe involves maintaining ample economic and social engagement with the rest of the world.     Bioactivity of wollastonite/aerogels composites obtained from a TEOS-MTES matrix

    Organic-inorganic hybrid materials were synthesized by controlled hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), methyltrimethoxysilane (MTES), synthetic wollastonite powders and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in an ethanol solution. Aerogels were prepared from acid hydrolysis of TEOS and MTES with different volume ratio in ethanol, followed by addition of wollastonite powder and PDMS in order to obtain aerogels with 20 wt% of PDMS and 5 wt% of CaO of the total silica. Finally, when the wet gels were obtained, they were supercritically dried at 260°C and 90 bar, in ethanol. In order to obtain its bioactivity, one method for surface activation is based on a wet chemical alkaline treatment. The particular interest of this study is that we introduce hybrid aerogels, in a 1 M solution of NaOH, for 30 s at room temperature. We evaluate the bioactivity of TEOS-MTES aerogel when immersed in a static volume of simulated body fluid (SBF). An apatite layer of spherical-shaped particles of uniform size smaller than 5 microns is observed to form on the surface of the aerogels after 25 days soaking in SBF.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación MAT2005-01583Junta de Andalucía TEP 79

    Los usos del folclore y la construcción de una identidad regional “costeña” y nacional en la obra de Antonio Brugés Carmona, 1940-1950

    En el presente artículo queremos resaltar el rol protagónico que entre 1940 y 1950 tuvo un intelectual costeño en la formación de una identidad regional a partir de la folclorización de expresiones artísticas (música y danza) locales y su intento por articularlas a una identidad nacional en Colombia. Basados en los pocos escritos de este personaje, pretendemos mostrar que la construcción de una identidad regional pasó por tensiones y negociaciones, por las afinidades culturales del autor y, sobre todo, por la necesidad que tenían los gobiernos liberales y el Estado colombiano de construir una idea más amplia de nación.In this article we highlight the leading role that a “costeño” intellectual had between 1940 and 1950 in the formation of a regional identity based on folklorization of local artistic expressions (music and dance), and his attempt to articulate a national identity in Colombia. Based on the few writings of this intellectual we intend to show that the construction of a regional identity experienced tensions and negotiations, given the cultural affinities of the author and, above all, the need of the liberal governments and the Colombian state to construct a broader idea of nation.No presente artigo, queremos ressaltar o papel protagônico que, entre 1940 e 1950, teve um intelectual “costenho” (assim chamados os habitantes do litoral colombiano) na formação de uma identidade regional a partir da folclorização de expressões artísticas (música e dança) locais e sua tentativa por articulá-las a uma identidade nacional na Colômbia.     Mesoscopic structure conditions the emergence of cooperation on social networks

    We study the evolutionary Prisoner's Dilemma on two social networks obtained from actual relational data. We find very different cooperation levels on each of them that can not be easily understood in terms of global statistical properties of both networks. We claim that the result can be understood at the mesoscopic scale, by studying the community structure of the networks. We explain the dependence of the cooperation level on the temptation parameter in terms of the internal structure of the communities and their interconnections. We then test our results on community-structured, specifically designed artificial networks, finding perfect agreement with the observations in the real networks. Our results support the conclusion that studies of evolutionary games on model networks and their interpretation in terms of global properties may not be sufficient to study specific, real social systems. In addition, the community perspective may be helpful to interpret the origin and behavior of existing networks as well as to design structures that show resilient cooperative behavior.Comment: Largely improved version, includes an artificial network model that fully confirms the explanation of the results in terms of inter- and intra-community structur

    The action of obestatin in skeletal muscle repair: stem cell expansion, muscle growth, and microenvironment remodeling

    The development of therapeutic strategies for skeletal muscle diseases, such as physical injuries and myopathies, depends on the knowledge of regulatory signals that control the myogenic process. The obestatin/GPR39 system operates as an autocrine signal in the regulation of skeletal myogenesis. Using a mouse model of skeletal muscle regeneration after injury and several cellular strategies, we explored the potential use of obestatin as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of trauma-induced muscle injuries. Our results evidenced that the overexpression of the preproghrelin, and thus obestatin, and GPR39 in skeletal muscle increased regeneration after muscle injury. More importantly, the intramuscular injection of obestatin significantly enhanced muscle regeneration by simulating satellite stem cell expansion as well as myofiber hypertrophy through a kinase hierarchy. Added to the myogenic action, the obestatin administration resulted in an increased expression of VEGF/VEGFR2 and the consequent microvascularization, with no effect on collagen deposition in skeletal muscle. Furthermore, the potential inhibition of myostatin during obestatin treatment might contribute to its myogenic action improving muscle growth and regeneration. Taken together, our data demonstrate successful improvement of muscle regeneration, indicating obestatin is a potential therapeutic agent for skeletal muscle injury and would benefit other myopathies related to muscle regeneration

    Effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) of contrasting origins in Cu and Pb speciation and toxicity to Paracentrotus lividus larvae

    Original research paperWater samples of contrasting origin, including natural seawater, two sediment elutriates and sewage-influenced seawater, were collected and obtained to examine the effect of the dissolved organic matter(DOM) present on metal bioavailability. The carbon content (DOC) and the optical properties (absorbanceand fluorescence) of the coloured DOM fraction (CDOM) of these materials were determined. Cu and Pbcomplexation properties were measured by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) and the effect of DOMon Cu and Pb bioavailability was studied by means of theParacentrotus lividusembryo-larval bioassay.Sediment elutriates and sewage-influenced water (1) were enriched 1.4–1.7 times in DOC; (2) absorbedand reemitted more light; and (3) presented higher Cu complexation capacities (LCu) than the naturalseawater used for their preparation.LCuvaried from 0.08 M in natural seawater to 0.3 and 0.5 Min sediment elutriates and sewage-influenced water, respectively. Differences in DOC, CDOM and Cucomplexation capacities were reflected in Cu toxicity. DOM enriched samples presented a Cu EC50of0.64 M, significantly higher than the Cu EC50of natural and artificial seawater, which was 0.38 M. Theprotecting effect of DOM on Cu toxicity greatly disappeared when the samples were irradiated with highintensity UV-light. Cu toxicity could be successfully predicted considering ASV-labile Cu concentrationsin the samples. Pb complexation by DOM was only detected in the DOM-enriched samples and causedlittle effect on Pb EC50. This effect was contrary for both elutriates: one elutriate reduced Pb toxicity incomparisonwiththecontrolartificialseawater,whiletheotherincreasedit.UVirradiationofthesamplescaused a marked increase in Pb toxicity, which correlated with the remaining DOC concentration. DOMparameterswererelatedtoCuspeciationandtoxicity:goodcorrelationswerefoundbetweenDOCandCuEC50, whileLCucorrelated better with the fluorescence of marine humic substances.     Automatic pre-alignment of multimodality rat brain images using principal axes transformation

    Abstract of: AMI Annual Conference 2006, March 25-29The use of small animal studies of different modalities isnowadays widespread, since functional studies like positron emission tomography (PET) or single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) are better analyzed when mapped to the underlying anatomical structure coming from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT). The different positioning of the animals in the scanners results in the need for automated image registration methods. One important drawback of the existing algorithms is their limited capture range: if case of large initial misregistration (large translations and rotations) the optimization may not converge to the right solution, and the images do not become correctly coregistered. To avoid this problem we propose the use of a pre-alignment step based on the principal axes transformation.Publicad
