    Quantum Monte Carlo calculation of the zero-temperature phase diagram of the two-component fermionic hard-core gas in two dimensions

    Motivated by potential realizations in cold-atom or cold-molecule systems, we have performed quantum Monte Carlo simulations of two-component gases of fermions in two dimensions with hard-core interactions. We have determined the gross features of the zero-temperature phase diagram by investigating the relative stabilities of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic fluids and crystals. We have also examined the effect of including a pairwise, long-range r^3 potential between the particles. Our most important conclusion is that there is no region of stability for a ferromagnetic fluid phase, even if the long-range interaction is present. We also present results for the pair-correlation function, static structure factor, and momentum density of two-dimensional hard-core fluids

    Photo-oxidative and soil burial degradation of irrigation tubes based on biodegradable polymer blends

    Irrigation tubes based on biodegradable polymers were prepared via an extrusion-drawing process by Irritec and compared to conventional pipes made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). A commercial polylactide/poly (butyleneadipate-co-butyleneterephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) blend (Bio-Flex®) and Mater-Bi® were used. The polymers were characterized from rheological and mechanical points of view. Irrigation pipes were subjected to photoaging with continued exposure to UV radiation up to 22 days. The degradability in the soil of irrigation tube samples was studied. The influence of temperature and UV irradiation on soil burial degradation was investigated. A soil burial degradation test was carried out at 30 °C and 50 °C for up to 70 days. The degree of degradation was evaluated from the weight loss percentage. The degradation rate of irrigation tube samples based on Mater-Bi® was higher at 30 °C and was stimulated after 14 days of UV irradiation. Higher temperatures or UV aging encouraged the disintegration in soil of Bio-Flex®-based irrigation tubes.     A Qualitative Study of Doctoral Student Supervisory Development

    Doctoral students in a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program are required to have training in clinical supervision. Frequently doctoral counseling programs have a supervision practicum course designed to facilitate student development into a supervisor. This qualitative research utilized a collective case study approach to gather descriptions of the experiences doctoral students found most useful about their supervision training. Doctoral students enrolled in a supervision practicum course were asked to describe their experiences as supervisors in training through a semi-structured interview approach. Three broad themes emerged from the data: Facilitation of Development, Formation of Supervisory Style, and Supervisory Roles. Descriptions of the themes and specific experiences doctoral students identified as contributing to their development are explored

    The Gamma--Ray Burst catalog obtained with the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor aboard BeppoSAX

    We report on the catalog of Gamma--Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected with the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. It includes 1082 GRBs with 40--700 keV fluences in the range from 1.3×10−71.3\times 10^{-7} to 4.5×10−44.5\times 10^{-4} erg cm−2^{-2}, and with 40--700 keV peak fluxes from 3.7×10−83.7\times 10^{-8} to 7.0×10−57.0\times 10^{-5} erg cm−2^{-2}s−1^{-1}.     Detection of Complex Networks Modularity by Dynamical Clustering

    Based on cluster de-synchronization properties of phase oscillators, we introduce an efficient method for the detection and identification of modules in complex networks. The performance of the algorithm is tested on computer generated and real-world networks whose modular structure is already known or has been studied by means of other methods.     Analytic theory of correlation energy and spin polarization in the 2D electron gas

    We present an analytic theory of the pair distribution function and the ground-state energy in a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas with an arbitrary degree of spin polarization. Our approach involves the solution of a zero-energy scattering Schr\"odinger equation with an effective potential which includes a Fermi term from exchange and kinetic energy and a Bose-like term from Jastrow-Feenberg correlations. The form of the latter is assessed from an analysis of data on a 2D gas of charged bosons. We obtain excellent agreement with data from quantum Monte Carlo studies of the 2D electron gas. In particular, our results for the correlation energy show a quantum phase transition occurring at coupling strength rs≈24r_s\approx 24 from the paramagnetic to the fully spin-polarized fluid.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Questioning the validity of non-extensive thermodynamics for classical Hamiltonian systems

    We examine the non-extensive approach to the statistical mechanics of Hamiltonian systems with H=T+VH=T+V where TT is the classical kinetic energy. Our analysis starts from the basics of the formalism by applying the standard variational method for maximizing the entropy subject to the average energy and normalization constraints. The analytical results show (i) that the non-extensive thermodynamics formalism should be called into question to explain experimental results described by extended exponential distributions exhibiting long tails, i.e. qq-exponentials with q>1q>1, and (ii) that in the thermodynamic limit the theory is only consistent in the range 0≤q≤10\leq q\leq1 where the distribution has finite support, thus implying that configurations with e.g. energy above some limit have zero probability, which is at variance with the physics of systems in contact with a heat reservoir. We also discuss the (qq-dependent) thermodynamic temperature and the generalized specific heat.Comment: To appear in EuroPhysics Letter
