    Double scattering of light from biophotonic nanostructures with short-range order

    We investigate the physical mechanism for color production by isotropic nanostructures with short-range order in bird feather barbs. While the primary peak in optical scattering spectra results from constructive interference of singly-scattered light, many species exhibit secondary peaks with distinct characteristic. Our experimental and numerical studies show that these secondary peaks result from double scattering of light by the correlated structures. Without an analog in periodic or random structures, such a phenomenon is unique for short-range ordered structures, and has been widely used by nature for non-iridescent structural coloration.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Photonic Band Gaps in 3D Network Structures with Short-range Order

    We present a systematic study of photonic band gaps (PBGs) in three-dimensional (3D) photonic amorphous structures (PAS) with short-range order. From calculations of the density of optical states (DOS) for PAS with different topologies, we find that tetrahedrally connected dielectric networks produce the largest isotropic PBGs. Local uniformity and tetrahedral order are essential to the formation of PBGs in PAS, in addition to short-range geometric order. This work demonstrates that it is possible to create broad, isotropic PBGs for vector light fields in 3D PAS without long-range order.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure

    When does economic development promote mitigation and why?

    Is economic development compatible with mitigation? On the one hand, development should promote effective climate policy by enhancing states’ capacities for mitigation. On the other hand, economic growth creates more demand for production, thereby inhibiting emissions reduction. These arguments are often reconciled in the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) thesis. According to this approach, development initially increases emissions in poor economies, but begins to lower emissions after a country has attained a certain level of development. The aim of this article is to determine empirically whether the EKC hypothesis seems plausible in light of emissions trends over the birth and implementation of the Kyoto Protocol. Drawing on data from the World Bank World Development Indicators and World Resources Institute Climate Data Explorer, it conducts a large-N investigation of the emissions behaviour of 120 countries from 1990 to 2012. While several quantitative studies have found that economic factors influence emissions activity, this article goes beyond existing research by employing a more sophisticated – multilevel – research design to determine whether economic development: (a) continues to be a significant driver once country-level clustering is accounted for and (b) has different effects on different countries. The results of this article indicate that, even after we account for country-level clustering and hold constant the other main putative drivers of emissions activity, economic development tends to inhibit emissions reduction. They also provide strong evidence that emissions trends resemble the EKC, with development significantly constraining emissions reduction in the South and promoting it in the North

    Measuring the refractive index dispersion of (un)pigmented biological tissues by Jamin-Lebedeff interference microscopy

    Jamin-Lebedeff interference microscopy is a powerful technique for measuring the refractive index of microscopically-sized solid objects. This method was classically used for transparent objects immersed in various refractive-index matching media by applying light of a certain predesigned wavelength. In previous studies, we demonstrated that the Jamin-Lebedeff microscopy approach can also be utilized to determine the refractive index of pigmented media for a wide range of wavelengths across the visible spectrum. The theoretical basis of the extended method was however only precise for a single wavelength, dependent on the characteristics of the microscope setup. Using Jones calculus, we here present a complete theory of Jamin-Lebedeff interference microscopy that incorporates the wavelength-dependent correction factors of the half- and quarter-wave plates. We show that the method can indeed be used universally in that it allows the assessment of the refractive index dispersion of both unpigmented and pigmented microscopic media. We illustrate this on the case of the red-pigmented wing of the damselfly Hetaerina americana and find that very similar refractive indices are obtained whether or not the wave-plate correction factors are accounted for.     Spatiotemporal complexity of a ratio-dependent predator-prey system

    In this paper, we investigate the emergence of a ratio-dependent predator-prey system with Michaelis-Menten-type functional response and reaction-diffusion. We derive the conditions for Hopf, Turing and Wave bifurcation on a spatial domain. Furthermore, we present a theoretical analysis of evolutionary processes that involves organisms distribution and their interaction of spatially distributed population with local diffusion. The results of numerical simulations reveal that the typical dynamics of population density variation is the formation of isolated groups, i.e., stripelike or spotted or coexistence of both. Our study shows that the spatially extended model has not only more complex dynamic patterns in the space, but also chaos and spiral waves. It may help us better understand the dynamics of an aquatic community in a real marine environment.Comment: 6pages, revtex

    Population dynamics of the last leopard population of eastern Indochina in the context of improved law enforcement

    Poaching, a major threat to wildlife worldwide, is pushing species toward extinction. To reduce poaching pressure and combat biodiversity loss, improved law-enforcement efforts reportedly are required; the effectiveness of which can be determined through rigorous monitoring of wildlife populations, particularly of endangered large carnivores. In the Eastern Plains Landscape of Cambodia, law-enforcement efforts increased to counter the severe threats from illegal activities; however, it is unknown if these strategies are benefiting the population of the Critically Endangered Indochinese leopard (Panthera pardus delacouri), the last large felid population of eastern Indochina. We used open population spatial capture-recapture models to estimate density, survival, per-capita recruitment, and population growth rates of leopard using data from 7 camera-trap surveys conducted over 11 years (2009–2019). We found that the population (a) declined by over 82 % (from 1.5 to 0.3 leopard/100 km2), (b) had low survival probability (0.58) and low recruitment rates (males: 0.04, females: 0.24), and (c) is expected to continue declining. An additional survey in 2021 failed to detect leopard, suggesting the species now is functionally extinct, if not fully extirpated, from the landscape. Over the study period, there was a drastic increase in human activity, with a 20-fold increase in detection frequencies of humans and a 1000-fold increase in lethal-trap encounter rate. The rise in anthropogenic pressures, particularly snaring, appeared to be the primary reason for the leopard decline, indicating the last decade of management interventions was insufficient to conserve the species, which now appears to be extirpated in all of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. This has implications for leopard conservation in the wider region, notably that efforts should now focus on populations within the two remaining strongholds. Our results suggest that increases in law-enforcement efforts alone are unlikely to protect wildlife in eastern Indochina; thus, additional strategies are needed to address the region's snaring crisis, including legislative reforms, community engagement, and programs that reduce demand for wildlife meat and products. Long-term studies of remaining Indochinese leopard populations coupled with timely and effective conservation actions are needed to avoid the complete demise of this subspecies

    String Matching and 1d Lattice Gases

    We calculate the probability distributions for the number of occurrences nn of a given ll letter word in a random string of kk letters. Analytical expressions for the distribution are known for the asymptotic regimes (i) k≫rl≫1k \gg r^l \gg 1 (Gaussian) and k,l→∞k,l \to \infty such that k/rlk/r^l is finite (Compound Poisson). However, it is known that these distributions do now work well in the intermediate regime k≳rl≳1k \gtrsim r^l \gtrsim 1. We show that the problem of calculating the string matching probability can be cast into a determining the configurational partition function of a 1d lattice gas with interacting particles so that the matching probability becomes the grand-partition sum of the lattice gas, with the number of particles corresponding to the number of matches. We perform a virial expansion of the effective equation of state and obtain the probability distribution. Our result reproduces the behavior of the distribution in all regimes. We are also able to show analytically how the limiting distributions arise. Our analysis builds on the fact that the effective interactions between the particles consist of a relatively strong core of size ll, the word length, followed by a weak, exponentially decaying tail. We find that the asymptotic regimes correspond to the case where the tail of the interactions can be neglected, while in the intermediate regime they need to be kept in the analysis. Our results are readily generalized to the case where the random strings are generated by more complicated stochastic processes such as a non-uniform letter probability distribution or Markov chains. We show that in these cases the tails of the effective interactions can be made even more dominant rendering thus the asymptotic approximations less accurate in such a regime.Comment: 44 pages and 8 figures.
